Sorry but I have been friends with many European, African, Amercian travellers and expats and I think the perception differs for everyone. What surprises me is that they could easily find very good accommodation with Airbnb or Couchsurfing or Oyo for cheap. I don't think you need to navigate around these shady places unless you have some real business being there. The real India lies outside of these cities. :) I understand that you encourage people to understand the real identity of a place, but I think it would be mighty convenient to also point out how the country is really well facilitated as well if you can spare a little more, alternatively. A few points for travellers coming to Indian cities: 1. Have internet on your phone. The world has globalised and we have not stayed behind. You can easily find hotels, routes, pubs, cabs, restaurants, etc. if you feel a bit lost. 2. Do not trust the first person who comes running to you offering his or her services, there are authorised places for everything which is much cheaper than most countries in the world. Again, Google! 3. Avoid shady accommodation, most of us do too. You can find a decent hotel room with clean sheets, water, wifi, AC for as low as Rs. 1000. 4. If you are travelling to India, I would like to consider that you have a budget and can afford good food, do not get drawn into going inside dark shady lanes for adventure food because they are mostly dirty and unhygienic. Middle class Indians don't eat at such places. 5. If someone spanks you or tries to grab a boob, bring it it to the attention of local people around you, they will help you for sure. 6. Travel outside Indian cities and visit small towns, sea shores, beaches, villages, hill stations, you will rediscover your primal self (in a good way). 7. Before paying for anything, google and ask reliable people. 8. If someone local has helped you at any point of your trip, keep his contact and enquire with him once before taking any decisions which you are unsure of. 9. If you feel unsafe, bail! Do not test your luck. 10. If you want to know more, feel free to comment or drop me an email. :) I'd love to help you see the beautiful and enchanting India they keep promoting so much.

Thanks for sharing your tips Sanchayan! They're all good points. I get my accommodation recommendations from online travel reviews, trusted travel bloggers I know and word of mouth. Every traveler has their own budget, their parameters of what feels "safe". It's easy to assume a western traveler has a strong and privileged financial base and that everyone's definition of 'cheap' is the same. It's not. I can only share my experience based on my budget and limited time. I encourage yourself, and others to film the Kolkata you want to show and share what I didn't. I was there for such a short time, I don't claim to be an expert of anything other than my own experience. But of all the big to small cities I've been to from Rajasthan to Mumbai, Kerala, Sikkim, Ladakh, Amritsar, etc...KOLKATA is one of my top fave cities and one I felt most distinctly different from others. My accommodations and surrounding environment had a big hand in that, because above all, I felt safe and my hotel was clean.

If you are a foreign traveller in India there are plenty of apps that you can use to make your travel smooth and comfortable....use apps like Oyo room to book a nice decent accommodation within your budget....then you have Ola and Uber app for booking a cab....for good food options you have zomato....and there are plenty other apps that you can use.....don't stay in unreliable places or eat in some unhygienic restaurants.....always have internet in your mobile....

You seem to take any less-than-desirable situations and make the most of them. The shower situation... not the most desirable experience, but these things can happen when one travels. Fix it if you can, and if you cannot, just roll with it and move on. Awesome! Haha. Thanks for all of the valuable information. I'm now a subscriber. I like your style.

I've often stayed in this hotel it's in a great location away from the 'hustle' of Sudder Street. You forgot to mention they have a great attached restaurant serving good food. Because it's located in a business area there are lots of street food vendors to cater to the demands of the office workers. The Mission Cafe opposite Broadway Hotel is a fast food cafe 'standing only' serves excellent coffee and snacks. The location is very convenient opposite Chandni Chowk Metro and within easy walking distance to Sudder Street; Park Street; Esplanade; The Post Office and Fairlie Place Tourist Quota Office. Burra Bazaar the Whole Sale market; Bengal Tourist Office and City Banks.

Hey! You're the second travel blogger who recommended this hotel! I just read this on Mark Weins travel blog too. Thanks for doing a video so I can see! I just graduated college -yay- but I'm on a super tight budget. My main requirements is that it's central, near a metro and close to famous landmarks, safe.. and clean. This looks like a palace to me, but I can't tell if its clean. I will freak if there are roaches. I heard there are 100-200 rs hotels in India. Is that true? They're more what I can afford right now, due to student loans and taxes. Are they safe? Have you ever stayed in Paharganj in Delhi? I hear a lot of backpackers stay there and it's slums, but near the train station. Thanks. Looking forward to your thoughts. xo

AlyssaB Do not listen to these. Recently a Japanese friend of mine came to Calcutta. He wanted to go to a Chinese restaurant, but only one of the two Chinese restaurant as written in a travel guide book in Japanese. These two restaurants are in a slum area of strange people, none of them are local. We do not go there in broad day light. After eating there he had stomach upset. Ask the local; there are many good hotels and rerstaurant. Try Peerless Inn or Kenilworth or Hotel Hindustan; they have moderate price.

You have immense courage to travel the world alone, don't you get scared or something?😨I wouldn't stay in that hotel alone at night, who can say I wont see some British fellow walking in my room? Also try to choose some good hotels next time because you can get better standards with the same amount of money(or a couple hundred bucks more). The place you stayed had a really low standard and I don't like seeing tourists visiting my city (or my country) having to cope with such low quality places which can become more difficult for people coming from a first world country. Trust me, that is really not the standard of our city, we have better budget hotels that aren't so stone-age piss poor. Use makemytrip or Oyo to book rooms where you can actually see photos of the place or the room you will be staying along with reviews. Kolkata also has some upscale places, modern multiplex, shopping malls, pubs, lounges, high rises, you name it! Visit them too for a change. It's a huge city with a massive diversity - you can spot BMWs and Mercedes while at the same time you can see starving children pushing carts under the scorching sun. You can't really sum up Kolkata by looking at just one side of it :) P.S - No sarcasm intended whatsoever. Really like your videos!

I can totally understand the need to save a few bucks when you have long travel plans (without compromising your safety though). However, one thing I would suggest is you could also try AirBnb or something similar. I think that will give you some feel of what the city looks like outside of the very central part. Plus, you might also get some help from some locals (that is, your host) in planning your trip.

+Tripti Shekhawat 1- how many international countries do you travel in a year? 2- when you travel internationally how many days is your average trip? 3- how much is your total spending allowance per day? 4- how many job/s do you work at that afford annual international travel? Whatever you answer, i guarantee my answer will be drastically different from yours. You can donate to better my film and travel budget: patreon.com/grrrltraveler

There are plenty of people in India who will say that if visitors do not travel in sleeper class they are not seeing the real India- so there's that. Everyone has opinions. As far as budgets, if a lack of strong finances stopped lots of us from traveling, we would be at home reading about other people's trips. (Or looking to marry the right person who will pay for adventures because many won't get off their fat asses to give it a try). Low budget is not a deterrent and backpacking will bring people like us into life moments that 'high budget' folks will never experience. We come out of it with stories for a lifetime and are well-rounded individuals for our efforts. I have stayed in my share of Hilton Hotels and they're all the same in the end - and none of those experiences are memorable. On the other hand, I have been at wit's end over what to do next - low budget - with a backpack and no ride when I was hitchhiking before it got dark. Now what? I got off the road and went into a field for the night - North Carolina - and looked up at the stars as I sipped some water and ate something from my pack. Once I accepted the fact that I was stuck for the night, I realized that I wouldn't change that low-budget moment for anything in the world. I could write a book about my experiences but my stays in the Hilton won't make any chapters.

I loved and appreciate that you do opt for budget hotels even though money wasn't an issue. It inspires me to walk a similar trail to yours, and luxury hotels look all the same in my opinion and gives little insight to the real thing. Wish I found it earlier though, I'm planning a trip to Kolkata in about a week :) Cheers!

There are far better hotels then this if only you can afford them and know the right hotels. Before coming to Kolkata you should have gone through proper guides instead of searching those slum by yourself.
