I remember reading that Thorek (I think) before he died, called his runes to open the gates of Valaya. But I don't understand why he did this if he, and the dwarf host, were already beaten and he just let Neferata get to Valaya. Did I read something wrong, or is it just more Endtimes tomfoolery?

Yeah, it shouldn't have opened up the gates. What should've happened, is Valaya should've awoken and aided in the defense, but being weakened by her reawakening, she becomes easy prey to Nagash and Neferata, but is left alive.
