Apart from the 50 times Hayden said “the longer the icon of sin is on earth, the stronger it will become” in Urdak alone, he just kind of seemed a little know-it-all and slightly condescending to me. At least the intern is funny and knows what you’re capable of and respects you and will probably follow you to the ends of the universe. Also, my money is on that in part 2, he’ll key killed by evil doom guy and then the slayer has to go on a revenge quest. Just a theory though, probably won’t happen.

@@tochka832 The first Quake had an identity & it's the only one whose single player most people remember fondly. The new Doom doesn't have nearly enough Lovecraft to be a Q1 reboot, and the movement mechanics are too different. So between gameplay & aesthetic, it isn't Quake in 'essense' at all. Almost nobody likes the Stroggoverse (Q2+4) and the other multiplayer entries don't really count as far as campaign goes. My favourite quote from the Doom Slayer: "I have killed bigger and worse than you" My favourite quote from the Dark Lord: "In the first age, in the first battle, when the shadows first lengthened, one stood. Burned by the embers of Armageddon, his soul blistered by the fires of Hell and tainted beyond ascension, he chose the path of perpetual torment. In his ravenous hatred he found no peace; and with boiling blood he scoured the Umbral Plains seeking vengeance against the dark lords who had wronged him. He wore the crown of the Night Sentinels, and those that tasted the bite of his sword named him... the Doom Slayer. Tempered by the fires of Hell, his iron will remained steadfast through the passage that preys upon the weak. For he alone was the Hell Walker, the Unchained Predator, who sought retribution in all quarters, dark and light, fire and ice, in the beginning and the end, and he hunted the slaves of Doom with barbarous cruelty; for he passed through the divide as none but demon had before. And in his conquest against the blackened souls of the doomed, his prowess was shown. In his crusade, the seraphim bestowed upon him terrible power and speed, and with his might he crushed the obsidian pillars of the Blood Temples. He set forth without pity upon the beasts of the nine circles. Unbreakable, incorruptible, unyielding, the Doom Slayer sought to end the dominion of the dark realm. he age of his reckoning was uncounted. The scribes carved his name deep in the tablets of Hell across eons, and each battle etched terror in the hearts of the demons. They knew he would come, as he always had, as he always will, to feast on the blood of the wicked. For he alone could draw strength from his fallen foes, and ever his power grew, swift and unrelenting. None could stand before the horde but the Doom Slayer. Despair spread before him like a plague, striking fear into the shadow-dwellers, driving them to deeper and darker pits. But from the depths of the abyss rose The Great One, a champion mightier than all who had come before. The Titan, of immeasurable power and ferocity. He strode upon the plain and faced the Doom Slayer, and a mighty battle was fought on the desolate plains. The Titan fought with the fury of the countless that had fallen at the Doom Slayer's hand, but there fell the Titan, and in his defeat the shadow horde were routed. And in his terrible rancor between worlds and through time, the Hell Walker found the wretch who shall not be named, but in his heresy was loyal to his evil cause. The wretch adorned the Doom Slayer in a mighty armor, wrought in the forges of Hell, impenetrable and unyielding. With sword and shield of adamantine strength, the Doom Slayer set to banishing all that were left unbroken by his savagery to the void. Yet as the mighty Titan fell and dread engulfed the armies of Doom, the demon priests of the Blood Temples laid a trap to capture this scourge of Hell. Insatiable, even by the vanquishing of the Great One, the Hell Walker sought prey in the tombs of the Blood Keep. And blinded by his fervor, the lure drew him in. The priests brought down the temple upon the Doom Slayer, and in his defeat entombed him in the cursed sarcophagus. The mark of the Doom Slayer was burned upon his crypt, a warning to all of Hell that the terror within must never be freed. There he lies still, and ever more, in silent suffering."

I disagree on the music part, the DLC overall has an equally good soundtrack for example bloodswamps combat music that shit was BADASS. And The Holt is straight up far superior than Micks music on Urdak. Both do the job fantastic. Imo the DLC's ost is absolutely on the same level as Mick Gordon it's just a different style and fits well with the DLC giving it it's own identity.

I really like all the blood swamps music, the ambient track is very unique and yet still sounds like it fits Doom perfectly.
@BobsRevenge4 жыл бұрын
I love Hulshult and Levy, and they both have a ton of talent and great personalities, but Gordon's Doom music is on an entire other level. Doom 2016 and Eternal were very music forward and you had a feeling of driving the music with your violence, so it felt better integrated. The DLC's music feels like standard game music, although great game music. Aside from that technical aspect, Gordon's music feels like it matches the tension of the combat way better by having all these grindy and noisy electronic effects. The DLC ost doesn't ever come even close to reaching the heights of eg Super Gore Nest either. Gordon was able to incorporate riffs as catchy as something like Mastodon that felt SO badass while playing when the beats dropped as the combat got really intense, but I can't think of any riffs in the DLC ost that hit like that. I'm hoping that with Part 2 they'll be able to really work on integrating the music as well as Mick Gordon pushed for and accomplished, as well as have more time to really polish things up and bring in more variety for the sounds. I hope they work in more homages to other Id projects and previous Doom games too, which is another thing Gordon included in great ways. To be clear, I think the DLC music is great, but Gordon's work on Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal are so legendary that being able to reach that level for new composers is impossible without the time and budget of a full game.

I've yet to play The Ancient Gods DLC but after watching this review... Hoo boy am I excited but scared. Getting flashbacks to when I got to the final level in the main campaign for the first time and lost all TWENTY of my extra lives trying to beat it, only to lose in the end. But I like your attitude of "it's okay to be scared, it's okay to be frustrated - use that fear and anger to motivate yourself and show the demons (and the devs) that you will not go down without a fight," so I'll do my best to think like that when I get around to playing it. That final level in the campaign may have kicked my ass, but when I gave it another go after a small break, I managed to beat it without dying once (though I definitely came close several times). Having no extra lives that time was probably the pressure I needed. I might not ever be good enough to play Doom Eternal on Nightmare difficulty, but I love that genuine feeling of improvement in robust mechanics to overcome impossible odds that I find in few games nowadays. Devil May Cry is my personal flagship game for that sentiment, and it's looking like Doom Eternal could be its FPS counterpart. :)

Can't destroy weakpoints, can't use ice bombs, they're bullet sponges, and there's only one way to kill it which you leaves you totally exposed. What makes Doom Eternal fun is that every enemy has their strengths and weaknesses. The spirit has no weaknesses. This maybe wouldn't be a bad thing on its own if they didn't appear so often and with such large groups of enemies.

@@heatyeet6538 Exactly. I'm not against bullet sponges in Doom it they're implemented correctly. The Tyrant, Mancubus, and Baron are perfect examples of how to do it. Mancubi and Tyrants shoot projectiles that are devastating but their movement is slow. Barons are fast and throw projectiles but not as often. All 3 of these enemies can be faltered, ice bombed, and have weakpoints to be exploited. Above all, you can damage them with any weapon. That's good game design. Spirits though? Boring and frustrating.

Honestly, as someone who plays eternal enough that I don't worry much about Spirits anymore, I have to agree in the context of someone's first playthrough for TAG1. They really should've eased you into fighting them a bit more effectively than sending a Posessed Baron at you immediately. At the very least, they should tell you a bit more than what they listed in that tutorial message. I beat DE twice when it first came out and I haven’t picked it up a 2 days ago for the DLC. Gotta admit, I was hoping for an ease into the game to remind myself the control layout and weapon wheel. But right off the get go, Spinal Tap came in and cranked it to 11. Best action game I’ve played in so long. In the main game I played (like most people) SSG and Balista almost exclusively with the grenade combat shotgun. But this game had me changing to every single weapon, and I use my equipment so much now. The ice bomb and two grenades I’m using every damn chance I get. I play on PS4 and I must admit, I’m unashamed that right now I’m on the (Maligog?) eye cube level and I can’t get past the final portion when there’s two eyes and pinky’s and hell knights all around. But it makes me enjoy it even more. People seriously underrate the gunplay in this game. It’s fantastic.

My favorite thing about this game, especially the DLC and master levels, is that it makes you a masochist. You're not getting the true Doom Eternal experience if you're not enjoying getting your ass whooped by two marauders and thirty imps. The rage you feel shouldn't make you want to stop playing, it should make you want to rip and tear even more. You should want to take that anger on the demons that are pummeling you, because when you finally get the kill on that last baron or that last arachnotron or whatever, you get that massive hit of dopamine because you decided to keep fighting until all was said and done. I myself still struggle with this aspect of the game, but I'm certainly getting better with it, and it's making the whole experience so much more fun.

As someone on console, it’s weird for me hearing criticisms you had about the turrets, eye-box battle and the Blood Maykrs all being too easy. Not impossible and not unsatisfying to beat, but they’re the types of enemies made with a mouse and keyboard setup in mind. It feels... awkward fighting them with a controller, way harder than it should be. The final boss was also an unsatisfying nightmare on console (and on Normal) which, sadly, had me resorting to using the sentinel armour to finally get past the last phase. Took away a lot of the hard but fair and fun momentum it had. This was a damn good dlc though, and I felt all the better for getting past the Marauder issues I and many others had to enjoy the new challenges and intuitively learn how to combat them. I feel that little bit better knowing how to combat spirits and include what I thought was a useless microwave beam into new strategies.
