In this new series, we look at the ancient Hebrew wedding model and how it is interwoven throughout Scripture. Knowing the ancient Hebrew wedding model will help us understand some of Yeshua's more enigmatic words, will help us understand matters of prophecy, as well as give us greater understanding of the Moedim. More importantly, it will help us have a more intimate knowledge of our Messiah.
In the first half of this teaching, we look at how a typical ancient Hebrew wedding would have taken place, from the selecting of the bride, through to the betrothal, and finally the wedding feast. In the second half of this teaching, We look at how the ancient Hebrew wedding model is in scriptures we are all familiar with, such as Yitschak's marriage to Rivkah, and Ya'akov's marriage to his two wives. We also explore at how YHVH followed the same principles in calling out a people to be in covenant with Himself.
We hope this teaching is a blessing to you.

The term “Daughter of Zion” is a metaphor God uses in the Bible for Jerusalem, and Israel later. The “daughter of Zion” is mentioned several times in the Old Testament, usually in prophecy and once in poetry. “Zion” meant Jerusalem and, later, Israel as the people of God. “Daughter of Zion,” then, does not refer to a specific person. It’s a metaphor for Israel and the loving, caring, patient relationship God has with His chosen people. As a representation of the people of Israel, the daughter of Zion is described in several different situations: 2 Kings 19:21: A people confident in the deliverance of their God. When Assyria threatened Jerusalem, King Hezekiah went to the Lord. In response, God sent Isaiah to reassure Hezekiah that Jerusalem would not fall to Assyria, and God considered the threatening insult to “the virgin daughter of Zion” as a personal affront to Himself. Isaiah 1:8: A hut, abandoned after judgment came to an evil family. Here, Isaiah compares the rebellion of Judah to a sick body in a devastated land. The daughter of Zion is left as a lone remnant-a shelter hidden in the vineyard or a hut in a cucumber field that barely escaped destruction. Jeremiah 4:31: A woman in labor, helpless before attackers. The steadfastness of Hezekiah was rare in Judah-most kings encouraged rebellion against God instead of loyalty to God. Jeremiah warns that if the nation does not turn away from evil, God will punish them severely. And the people will be helpless against it-as helpless as a woman in labor. Isaiah 62:11: A people awaiting salvation. After the punishment of exile, God promises restoration to Israel. He will rejoice over His chosen people again. And in verse 11, He promises the daughter of Zion, “Lo, your salvation comes; behold His reward is with Him, and His recompense before Him.” Micah 4:13: A bull that threshes his enemies. In verse 10, God warns that the daughter of Zion will suffer as much as a woman in labor. But in verse 13, He promises vengeance. The weak, powerless woman will become a bull with horns of iron and hoofs of bronze that will crush its enemies. Zechariah 9:9: A land awaiting its king. This prophecy promises Israel’s enemies will be destroyed, but also speaks about a more permanent solution to the problem of sin. “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Should in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; he is just and endowed with salvation, humble, and mounted on a donkey, even on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” Despite the consistent rebellion of the daughter of Zion against her Father, He promises to restore her and present her with a Deliverer-King in the form of Jesus. Daughter implies that God is a loving father. He cherishes and loves His people, even while they reject Him. By using the metaphor “daughter of Zion,” God showed how He felt for the rebellious Israelites: frustrated, angry, but always with an eye to the future when the relationship would be restored, and He could once again return to them and welcome them into His arms (Zechariah 2:10). Therefore, a more appropriate term would be something of the sort, “daughter of a King”, “daughter of God”, “daughter of the most Hight”, etc. The term I use is “daughter of a Heavenly King”.

"Yeshua almost becomes second place...". That is such a perceptive comment. It is sad how many people get ambushed by the fringe element that want to concentrate on Israel or Jewish Roots etc. instead of allowing those things to simply put the spotlight on Jesus.

The same thing for a lot of Christians ironically.. it’s not to point fingers but I think it stems from ignorance. I personally don’t believe the Roman Catholic Church is the apostolic church from which the traditions and teachings were handed down from the apostles. Almost all the Jewishness of the Bible was wiped out from the oral teachings and they subsequently created division between Jews and Christians (who were first Jewish converts then Gentile converts). I likewise was ignorant and had no idea how important it was to learn about the Jewish culture and customs of the time in order to understand the Bible and it made even the things Jesus said completely transparent on another level. Still it is critical for us to have the Holy Spirit to even be able to understand. It also helps though to have knowledge of these basic facts 😊

This is so helpful to me. I never knew so much of this. I just had the bits and pieces. My question is if putting away and divorce are different why in Matthew 1 does it say "put away" when we know it means divorce because as you said they were not living together so he would not be able to send her away. I have noticed that, in some instances, divorce and put away seem to be used interchangeably.

It probably has to do with translations. Some translations may mistakenly interchange them, without being aware of its historical background of Jewish customs. I wonder if you look at an interlinear instead - such as the English translation of the Majority text to see how it was originally written in the original manuscripts
@shayalynn
@shayalynn 11 ай бұрын
Textusreceptusbibles (and add the period and ‘com’) is a great site where you can compare all types of translations and even the original codexes (the Majority Text or Textus Receptus, and the Critical Text or what they sometimes call the Alexandrian). I love it because you can compare different translations at the same time (usually up to 3 or the text becomes hard to see). I just found this following description; the word used in the Scripture you are talking about is the Greek word ‘apoluo’ as the English transliteration. You can search for a word study on that too for more clarity. Lexicons are very helpful for the NT and the Brown-Driver-Briggs is too for the OT :)

Hi. Because modern engagement is a somewhat warped version of betrothal and if somebody marries a person who has been in an engagement before, with somebody else, would they be living in the sin of adultery or not? As we know, modern engagement sets the intention to enter in to a covenant and betrothal is the point of entering a covenant. Would the differences between them makes them two different things or would God consider modern engagement binding because is made some months in advance as the betrothal? Is modern engagement synonym with betrothal?
@PlaymakersInTheFaith
@PlaymakersInTheFaith Жыл бұрын
The question that I have for this brother is when God legally divorced Israel how was He still married unto them? How was the marriage covenant still intact even after the Father legally divorced Israel? “And I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the harlot also.” ‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭3‬:‭8‬ ‭KJV‬‬ “Turn, O backsliding children, saith the LORD; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion:” ‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭3‬:‭14‬ ‭KJV‬‬ The Father is showing that divorce doesn’t mean to end a marriage covenant but it only means to separate. Death is the only way to end a marriage covenant. Romans 7:1-4 / 1 Corinthians 7:39

Thank you for sharing this...it has been really helpful for me as I'm writing a play for my church this Christmas... with regards to the dowry or mohar though, I've read elsewhere that this was paid by the father of the bride and not by the groom or his father. Can I ask your source for this info?
@TheOliveBranchFellowship
@TheOliveBranchFellowship 4 жыл бұрын
It wouldn't make sense for the father of the bride to pay the dowry, as this is the price for the bride. Since the husband is taking the bride from her father's house, the husband has to pay this cost. Also consider.. Exo 22:16 TS2009 “And when a man entices a maiden who is not engaged, and lies with her, he shall certainly pay the bride-price for her to be his wife. This shows that the man had to pay the father of the bride. However, it was customary for the father of the bride to give the bride a good portion of the dowry as a gift. Fathers that held all the dowry to themselves were considered tight-fisted. This might be what you're thinking of.

The one I used for the slides is called The Scriptures by International Scriptural Research. There is also the HalleluYah Scriptures which is basically the same translation but with more Hebrew words thrown in. The Scriptures is free for the bible softwares E-Sword and TheWord.

Leah and Rachel were twins. They didn't have electricity. It was probably dark and considering he had never been with her, it was an easy mistake not to notice. I doubt Jacob was drunk during the ceremony. If the groom had gotten drunk then there was a good chance he could pass out or that something may not have functioned properly.

The ladies, Rachel and Leah could have had input with their father behind the scenes. We do not know. We also do not know if Jacob was drunk or not. Many things are omitted.

Michael I value your teachings. They have taught me more in the last year then most of my Christian walk because you speak of Elohim and touch on things that the Christian churches just seem to skate right over.. I have shared so many of your videos , and I have tried to answer questions but because I don't want to say what's wrong I'm kind of steer most people to this series if they will take the time to watch and learn and get to know their Elohim on a truthful levelthe words of the Torah and the tunak will just fall into place . Thank you so much. I pray for a clean Heart and a white garment. Yes that takes the crushing

In Matthew it is legal divorce being referred to by "put away." It doesn't say "put-away-with-certificate" because it's talking in the context of what Moses wrote to an audience that knows Torah. Proof? The "righteous" Joseph was going to simply "put-away" Mary. If "putting-away" meant being unfair to your wife and denying her a legal document, that wouldn't make sense. "Putting away" must have included the certificate, or Joseph would have been considering something sinful.

It's weird to think the man who made a false accusations of his wife not being a virgin, wouldn't also be stoned to death as he's also perpetuating sexual sin in a different kind of way. Only the women get stoned to death?

This is an absolutely amazing study! However, does anyone know of any sources that could be used to verify the historical accuracy of these customs, such as the groom having two witnesses to announce his arrival? I just want to make sure that the dots being connected here in scripture are actually supposed to be connected. I’ve saved this series in a playlist to watch later and share with others!

HI Great study! Thank you so much! I was thinking, when you were making an 'Educated Guess' about Adam and Eve being in the Garden for 1 year before the Fall, that THAT year would have been their BETROTHAL year, because Adam did not know Eve til after the Fall [ When she conceived and bare Cain ] Shalom to us only in Christ Yeshua.

Do Jews have sex before marriage or should they wait until the wedding to have sexual intercourse. because I heard from a messianic friend, he believe and his Rabbi said they can have sex and live together after getting engaged without having to get married first. I asked because I know marriage for the Jews is very sacred. Please help!
