Wow. Every time I watch this, you just get better! 40 years ago when I picked up the guitar, my eyes were glued to the hands of the guitarist. And here I am, watching your hands like a hawk. Thanks Erik.

Veri nice!!! Thanks. ❤️🙏🏻 Hi, dear Artist and dear friend, I'm Alessio Peluso from Bologna (Italy). For three months I have been learning to play Quena, magnificent instrument, together with the panflute! For some time I have not been able to emit clean notes, especially those of the second and third octave. Could it be due to the humidity that is created in the cut of the bit? Can you give me some advice on how to treat and take care of the instrument? Apart from studying and repeating the exercises, what can I do? Thank you so much my friend Comprai da te tre flauti, uno in legno traverso, l’altro il Sax ed un altro flauto in Re

After trying my luck with making Native American Flutes, I think I'll try this Quena next. The 'fipple' (at mouth) certainly looks easier to make the the nest/block of the NAF. Thanks!

You should start with the easy work. Side blown flutes. Then the Quena by the time the NAF comes around it would be easier I would think. That is an extremely difficult flute to make and my hat off to those gifted to get it. Erik

@@ErikTheFlutemakerCom Hey Erik, thanks for the advice. (Long winded warning) About 4 weeks ago I stumbled across a stack of dried cane in my shop and jumped online to find something interesting to make. Wind chimes were boring, then I found Charlie at BlueBearFlutes.com and the NAF looked like a great challenge for this burned out software engineer. So, in my woodworking-and-everything-else shop I started putting together jigs, burning tools and other necessities for the new adventure. I focused on making whistles first since they have the nest/block and I didn't need to be concerned about drilling/tuning the holes. With the help of Charlie's (verbose) videos and book, I figured out the essentials of that design. Every piece of cane/bamboo is different, so the variations kept me on my toes adjusting to them. So I made about 1 whistle per day, moving into 1 flute per day, with the obvious goal of 1 tuned flute eventually. And ALAS, to my surprise, I did it! And can do so now with a good success rate. My tuner and ear both agree they are tuned in a Minor Pentatonic and are playable (5 hole). So now, I go back to my box of rejected whistles and flutes and I can easily see the errors of my previous attempts (some I split in half so I see them better). You understand, of course, these are not 'beautiful' looking flutes, but I did it! I also found you, and watched your videos, so you contributed as well. Fortunately, I didn't know it was difficult. After all, Charlie (making flutes for 30+ years) made one in 5 minutes on a video! Ahhh....the joys of KZbin. Its just the beginning, and I'll see where this journey goes from here. Thanks again!
