I used level 6 chunky yarn with a size 9mm hook 25 chains by ~42-47 rows I increased the top ss to 6 and this pattern was perfect

I’m self taught as well. My number one tip for beginners is don’t crochet too tight! Most of the people I’ve gotten into crochet make the tightest stitches. Not only does it make it hard to work in but it also will cause pain in your hand and wrist. The stitches don’t have to be as tight as you think. Also if you get lost or frustrated, take a small break. Get a snack. Watch a funny video. Then come back. Good luck and have fun!

If you want the hat to be washable- use a 1-2 inch button to pull the threads of the Pom Pom through. It helps keep it balanced, and not floppy, and yet also easy to get a good temporary tie.

I've seen half a dozen ways to make a slip knot by hand, but your example with the crochet hook is cool. ;) Now if I could just get a handle on the tension arrangement with my fingers (arthritis) Id be good. I get about 15 chains in and hook slips out and I end up pulling what I just made. :D Great tutorial. :)

I did the 41 that the instructions call for, and I even upped the with to 54 rows from 52… it’s tight on my head, will fit my 3 year old though…

Hi, I am trying to make the beanie right now but how do you manage to make that Half Double Crochet Slip Stitch??? The stitches slide off the needle each time! I can see you pull the yarn a bit, but nevertheless, it is not easy to do that stitch! I did not continue.

@@amberhawkins697 the thing with this beanie is that the chain is the length of the hat! It's not meant to wrap around your head, you'll make as many rows as you need to go around your head.
