what a beautiful story based on true events during a time when God, family, and kindness amongst humankind existed even with strangers... I am 69 years old, and have watched the moral decline in this country with a heavy heart for our future, but I also know that God's redemption is more powerful than the evil in this present world, and He promises in His Word that the End of the Age would encounter the greatest outpouring of His Spirit bringing restoration, salvation, deliverance unlike any other in history prior to His return! Glory be to God.... and Merry Christmas everyone!

I was a movie “extra” on a number of his movies. I worked on a lot of films and was able to meet a lot of fancy actors. Robert was my very FAVORITE. HE was so kind and pleasant. (Unlike many) Once we were doing a golf film in the heat of the day. The director made us stand in the sun without water for a very long time. Robert noticed and refused to work until we were looked after. Just one example of his kindness. He was SPECIAL. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Have seen this before - and enjoyed it again. :) Robert Ulrich (sp?) was taken from us much too young. I was so in love with him as a younger woman, as he’s very cute. My mother was 21 at this time of 1931,,soup lines, hardly any money,,,and it explains a lot why she always kept the Great Depression mentality, which use to annoy me,,, but now I’m 70 , and I get it. ❤ Merry Christmas everybody,, no matter your circumstances,, the Lord Jesus came and was born here , and then at 33 years old he died for us. Your ticket is paid in full. The train for heaven wants you on it. Give your life to Christ and you will be in heaven. The greatest gift ever.

That was such a different time in our nation. Although we are in a similar financial situation in our country, there are many major differences. People helped each other, without expecting something in return. People cared about each other. People kept their promises. People shared what little they had. People loved their families more than anything else. People believed and trusted God. We need to learn from the past in order for America to have a future !

Thank you SO much for uploading this movie. I saw it years ago on television and loved it! But I never saw it being played again! This movie is actually based on a true story, although very loosely. The Feagan children DID go to Washington to see Hoover and he DID get the father out of jail. But it was with the permission of the mother. She was able to convince an executive of a bus company to provide free transportation on one of his busses to DC for the kids. Also, they never stayed overnight at the White House. Its also unclear as to the outcome of the father's case as the newspapers dropped the case after Hoover got the father out. Hoover's press secretary Theodore Joslin was present for the entire meeting with the children. Here is an account of what happened that day taken directly from his diary: “May 28, 1932 The papers carried a story today that three children of Charles Feagan of Detroit, charged with stealing an automobile in Missouri, had come to Washington in hopes the President would liberate their father. I referred to them in going over the news with the President this morning, saying: “It may be a publicity stunt. If you see them, you may get a flood of similar requests and if you don’t you are cold and indifferent.” “Never mind the arguments, Ted, I am going to see them,” he said. “Get Mitchell on the phone and we’ll see what the records show.” But there were no records in Washington, so we telephoned to Detroit and Kansas City. We got the details by 12:30 and then I had Mr. Nichol, manager of the bus company, bring the children over. All three, two girls and a boy, were bright and smart, and remarkably poised. When I took them into the President’s office, he shook hands with each and then turning to Bernice, 13, the oldest, he said, “Tell me the whole story.” She did a clear concise story of a father out of work. The President’s face was a study [as] he listened……He hesitated a moment when she concluded and then said: “I want you to go back home happy. There is no record of your father’s case here, but I am having inquiries made. I believe there must be much good in a man whose children are so well behaved and who show such loyalty and devotion. Now run along. I will use my good offices in this matter.” He shook hands with each, gave them each a button of the Washington bicentennial saying, “you can have these to remember me by.” His head dropped on his chest and to my amazement tears welled in his eyes. For the moment his Quaker training broke, for the youngsters personified the suffering of millions of people to him. He turned quickly to a window assaying over his shoulder, “get that father our of jail immediately.” In a moment, he turned back in complete control of his emotions again. “Well, let’s get to work,” he said. This is a literal account.”

This is a beautiful movie... Tissues a must have, I cried all the way through this one and I've seen it before. One thing that bothers me about it though, is the example that these children set for other children watching this movie....what they did was very brave and admirable but I would be terrified if my children set out across the country like they did...it's a very scary world out there, so much more scary now, then it was in those days. I would hate for some children to try something like this, because they saw this movie. In the movie they met all those helpful people along the way, and arrived safe and sound at their destination... there would be a very different outcome in our time now, and most likely in their time as well. Please talk with your children, if they watch this movie, and explain to them why they should NEVER try this themselves? Merry Holidays of your choice everyone. 🍃🤗🍃

Well, this movie WAS based on a true story but only three things about it were true. 1) There were 3 children named Feagan. 2) They DID meet with President Hoover. at the White House. 3) Hoover DID get their father out of jail. However, it was done with the full knowledge and consent of their mother who gained the sympathy of a local bus company executive who gave them free transportation to DC on a bus. Also, friends donated some money so they could eat and find a place to stay in DC. No, Hoover did NOT invite them to stay overnight at the White House.

@retroguy9494 Жыл бұрын
"They are only political people?" I sure hope you are NOT an American citizen because if you are, you need to go back to school! The president has a LOT of power. Now, the thing about THIS particular story is that it really happened just not the way the movie portrays it. The president has the power to release someone who has been charged with a federal crime, but not a state one and the father was being held on a state crime. What DID happen is that after the 3 children saw Hoover, he contracted the attorney general who in turn contacted the the district attorney in Detroit. At the instruction of the attorney general, the father was released. However, what we do NOT know is the outcome of the case. Was he simply released ROR pending trial? Did he still have to stand trial or did he take a plea? Or did the district attorney drop the case? The reason we do not know is that much like today's media and press, this received big press coverage but once the father was actually out of jail, they moved onto something else and never followed up.

it reminds me of when my dad wrote to the president in the 1970's I just finished high school and one day 2 president limos came and parked out our front door. I was afraid to answer it afraid we'd go to jail. I did let them in and they showed the letter with my dads finger prints and mine, cause I mailed it. He said we would be touring the white house soon and when my parents left my brother and I would be left behind for the president to take care of. It was the talk of the town back then. He meant it. They all open their briefcases it sounded like music almost and gave us long list of people to hire my dad,transportation help,housing and even job corp for me. It was amazing anything we could have asked for they had the answer. No one messed with my dad after that.

This movie begs the important question: Why do people continue to have children they cannot afford. Men knew better and should have thought of others, for a change !
@Charity-vm4bt11 ай бұрын
@@sarahhearn-vonfoerster7401It expresses a Christian, Catholic religious belief that was normal and expected. It was considered a moral responsibility for Irish Catholic families to have many children. Marriage was considered a respected vocation and intended to support the future of the country. Without children, there would be no future for the nation. Perhaps you either are reading into the past a different or secular ethic. The thinking of many women has been changed by the U.S. "culture" in the past sixty to 90 years. This probably took place long before you were born. If the movie ethics, based on a true story, are so upsetting to you, it would be advisable to move on. Rather than coming here to criticize what you do not understand or agree with.
