Fact. The song had been on the radio for a while, and fans had bough the album, and us Aussies being what we are, created this audience addition. First live performance of the song, the Angels knew nothing about this, and initially thought the audience thought they crap, and wanted them off the stage. By the end of the song, they realised that nope, the audience LOVE the song, and we just like to add inappropriate but perfectly placed stuff in to favourite songs. We also added to “Living Next Door To Alice”, and created a line dance to “Nutbush City Limits.” It is 100% required to retain your True Blue Aussie card to sing the additions, and do the dance at any opportunity.

The Angels formed in 1976 and the singer "Doc Neeson" died in 2014 at the age of 67. He was the main song writer along with lead guitarist Rick Brewster and his brother John Brewster. They had originally formed in 1970 as an acoustic blues band calling themselves The Moonshine Jug and String Band. In 74 they changed their name to the "Keystone Angels" and in 76 on advice from Harry Vanda and George Young (The Easybeats, and later of Flash in the Pan) shortened their name to The Angels. George Young, one of the greatest musical artists and Producer's in Australian history was the older brother of Angus and Malcom Young of AC/DC.

Wasn't there some great pub bands that went through The Charles Hotel. I was so excited to find The Charles when I moved to Perth from Brissy. Loved going to watch pub bands like Cold Chisel, INXS, Jo Jo Zepp and Falcons. Even Frankie J Holden. These days I love Foo Fighters as do my neighbours lol I just love music. Nothing like blaring rock music. My adult son, shit Mum can you turn it down lol

The Angels, formerly known as Keystone Angels wrote this in 1977. They would do lunchtime concerts around Adelaide (South Australia) suburban high schools. The call and response didn't really happen till the early/mid 80s..as far as I know.

The bass is, I believe, a Steinberger Bass. This is an anthemic song. Any Aussie from that age who hears the song name knows the proper response. It basically became a reflex action.

I made sure my kids know the proper response. Got to pass on traditions.

Aussies knew what you were talking about re the chant the second we saw what song it was! Lol That chant alone could be our national anthem here! Lmao

Can't help but crack a grin. Brings back memories from the late 1980's going to see the Angels at the Old Lion in Nth Adelaide a number of times.

As an Aussie I can tell you if this song comes on anywhere in Aus it still gets the crowd reaction of " No way, get f'd , f off.. They had some great albums.

He asks the question - "Am I ever gona see your face again?" and the crowd answers him "No way, Get F@cked, F@ck off!"

I was on a cruise ship out of Sydney with the entertainment crew being mostly British. They panicked when they played this song and the passengers added the chant. Double checked the lyrics. Weren't sure if they should stop the song. In the end they just let it happen and asked afterwards where that came from.

Doc Neeson wrote the song about a friend of his who passed away but not knowing this context Angels fans took it as a break up song, thinking it was about a guy wanting to see his ex-girlfriend and the chant is basically an Aussie girl telling her ex where to go... (Not sure that Peter Garrett, lead singer of Midnight Oil, had much choice about the bald head thing)

That's brilliant context and makes it all make sense.

"No way, get fucked, fuck off" that is what they are saying, The Angels were an Aussie Pub band and the crowd started saying this at one of their gigs and it stuck, you won't hear it in the recording though. Unfortunately Doc Neeson the lead singer of The Angels has passed away. Peter Garrett is the bald guy from Oz who fronted Midnight Oil.

Look at that older guy in the crowd halfway through the video with the moe and beard and glasses turned around looking at the crowd shouting "NO WAY GET FUCK OFF" He does look impressed 😂

Yes, it was a festival, Think it was called 'Under the Southern Cross,' about 20 or so singers/ bands including Jimmy Barnes , Russel Morris, Stevie Wright, Daryl Braithwaite, Shirley - all the great Aussie bands of the day - John Farnham was the last or near last for the night - and was joined on stage by Jimmy Barnes for 'When the War is over'.

I’m Australian & meet one of the roadies for the Angels a few weeks before they left to tour Canada in 1980. I was travelling to Canada at the same time. Met up with the roadie in Toronto, got free tickets to see the Angels in a little bar & my girl friend & I were the only two people in the club that knew all the words to their songs. BTW they went under the name of Angel City in Canada because there was another band in Canada called The Angels I believe. What a time to live in Australia in the 70’s & 80’s here in OZ ❤
