Sleep deprivation in the field can cause powerful hallucinations. While on exercise in the 1980s, a member of the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa who was on point, returned from the other side of a line of trees to report a three ring circus, with lights, acrobats, elephants and the like. Since we were reservists, whenever we were out in the field we were pushed to insane limits simply because there wasn’t a lot of time. During peacetime, a regular force unit could expect to spend many weeks on an exercise while we had hardly a week at a time. I can attest that after three days on as little as a half hour of sleep you get loopy. I can barely begin to imagine that men subject to real combat on the retreat from Mons, with life or death stress and lack of food, experienced.

We did a bowmen of mons photoshoot in 2017, taken on a period camera. It STILL gets shared around supernatural groups on facebook stating it as real.
