The Melbourne band scene still alive and well. I've been out the last two nights and seen to gigs with all with new bands. Four bands each night in two 50 max pubs, all out their cutting their teeth. They were varying levels of good, but all sung originals and gave their all. The places were full of young people to see them (says the mid 50s bloke) does my heart good. The death of the band isn't quite with us yet.

Doc gave it all up on that stage, as you can see, he worked his butt off with his high energy. What a great time we had that night! RIP Doc, you are still a legend here and never forgotten. It was a hard task for The Angels to crack into America. Pretty much so for most “ foreign bands”. when they tried. They were hampered by not being able to “ stay & play” due to lack of Green Cards &/or lack of $$ to do so, I think. But did two tours I believe, at which they went down with the audiences very well. They just couldn’t stay long enough to gain traction & I think there was some complications with their Aussie record label too which affected recording /record distribution; inability to switch labels/Companies or similar. Such a pity. They were highly entertaining & had a swag of strong, iconic, highly individual songs with great hooks, all delivered with high energy and a true rocking passion.

Once experienced cannot be forgotten.
@JK1959-z2t14 күн бұрын
I was at Narara over the Australia Day long weekend music festival 1983 & remember that concert like it happened yesterday & yes the band, especially Doc were simply unbelievable on that steaming hot Saturday night. They blew everyone else away that night, including INXS who were on before them & the night's headliners Men At Work who came on directly after. The stage announcer stated at the conclusion of their set, that they - "were Australia's greatest rock & roll band!!" While I still believe that that title both then & now belonged/belongs to Cold Chisel, on that night & in that place, it was very difficult not to agree with him. BTW, Chisel, who headlined the festival, played the following Sunday night, which was also stinking hot but didn't play up to their usual impeccable standard, even still, they were better than everyone else there, other than the Angels, & probably reflected the internal turmoil the band was going through which finally led to their breakup later that year.

@JK1959-z2t14 күн бұрын
Yes they have! The quality & quantity of their song catalogue is second only to Chisel's - though lacking that band's extraordinary versatility in playing across virtually any musical genre/style - amongst ALL Australian bands. AND I mean ALL Australian bands, and that even includes the Bee Gees (if you want to count them as Australian that is) or ACDC (whose collection of "truly great songs" is actually rather limited, being no more than a dozen, if that many) or LRB or INXS or the Oils or Air Supply.
@lencooke9443 ай бұрын
Hi guys, these were two great videos. I'm with George on this one, The Angels, in their prime, were one of Australia's best and most hard-working bands. Doc was one of the most charismatic frontmen you will ever see, everyone's eyes were always drawn to him. I think I commented in one of your reaction 'weeks', where you focussed on The Tragically Hip, that Gord Downie reminded me a bit of Doc Neeson, Gord had that almost dangerous edge to him, the edge that is clearly on display in these two The Angels videos. Alex, I hear what you are saying about there not being any bands anymore, the advent of social media and home recording technologies has created a new pathway for solo artists to gain massive followings. The world has changed. However, I don't think that bands are dead, there are still so many excellent bands the world over, but the venues have changed a bit, the pubs and clubs are finding it tough to attract crowds due to, amongst other things, overregulation and the price of booze. Bands are now far more likely to play festivals these days. As an example, I have just bought tickets to the Brisbane Knotfest show, which for about AUD$300 for GA tickets, I will see 13 bands including Slipknot, A Day to Remember, Babymetal, Polaris and Slaughter to Prevail. This is a killer Bill. Even the way festivals are being organised has changed. Here in Australia, several high-profile festivals have been cancelled of late, one major one just a few days after tickets went on sale. It's tough times for traditional festival organisers. This shifting festival scene has given rise to big bands hosting their own festivals, for example, Slipknot hosting the aforementioned Knotfest festivals all over the world, Babymetal hosted a series of festivals in Japan called Foxfest, which had acts like Bilmuri, Polyphia, and Electric Callboy on the Bill, and Bring Me The Horizon hosted a series of festivals across Asia, called Nex_Fest that BMTH headlined and had a strong lineup including their old friends Babymetal. So there seems to be a push back by artists to capitalise on their own brands and fill the Bills with bands they identify with. It's an interesting space in the market, one that I am watching keenly. Ok, one more thing. This is shamelessly Babymetal related. Earlier this year, Babymetal released a collaboration with German Electrocore band Electric Callboy. This song went on to be the biggest song at summer festivals all over the world and it seems that others were taking notice as well because the song has been listed on the ballot for potential nomination for a Grammy for "Best Metal Performance". This is not a nomination for a Grammy, but the step before nomination. I am hoping Babymetal can get through to the nomination stage, that way they can cheekily introduce themselves as the "Grammy nominated Babymetal" haha. I'll get out of your hair, thanks for some great Aussie music. Stay well, guys.

Guys, please do "Dawn is breaking" from that same 1979 gig at Latrobe University. An amazing song. Very different sound, slower than their other hits. It throws typical song structure out the window. The title of the song is the chorus, which is sung only once during the song, and no line is repeated. Every lyric is different. It's an eerie, epic masterpiece.
