I’ve been a fan of the Church since their very first album release and it was always a unique experience seeing them play live in the glorious days of the great Aussie Pun Band era (1980’s for me). We went to the concert that you reviewed the performance of Tantalised and it was brilliant for so many reasons………It was the Church ❤, it was at the iconic Sydney Opera House ❤❤, they had the George Ellis Orchestra accompanying them ❤❤❤ and, yes, Tantalised was the final song of the night ❤❤❤❤!

Wow guys, this was a treat. I know both songs but have never seen these versions. So, I was super impressed with the audio quality of Under the Milky Way, that must have been reengineered to get the sound and video quality to that level, magnificent. However, Tantalized, ... Alex said it: "that was a masterpiece", it's certainly a bit of a step from the original but I have never seen that performance before, and I am gobsmacked at how good it is. Just the way the orchestra carried the frenzied riff throughout the song was impressive. Chris, you have outdone yourself this time, thank you for giving that performance to the boys. Just awesome.

My fave band. thanks for the reaction guys and the selections Chris. Big shout out to George Ellis - the conductor in the Tantalised track. He scored all the orchestra parts for The Church tracks played at that gig, but has also scored and performed many other artist tribute gigs including, but not limited to: The Beatles, ABBA, Bee Gees, Queen, Bowie and Roy Orbison. And YES - that version of Tantalised is EPIC.

Growing up in Australia and listening to all these great Aussie bands/artists was a fantastic time, and that would have to be one of the best live performances ever. Love The Church and both tracks are winners! The Milky Way song reminds me of watching the Melbourne Arts Centre spire dazzle in bright colours at White Night about 7 years ago as this song was played into the summer night. This group, even though they sing about Australia, reminds me of the United States. The random mention of Memphis; on you tube there is a performance of their song Reptile in Minneapolis; so this song reminds me of Minnesota.🤷‍♂🤷‍♂ Great reaction guys!!

Love this. You probably know Under the Milky Way from when you did your gap year here. It's played regularly to this day. It's also been featured in a few ads in the US since it was released. It was featured in a famous car ad there. It was also featured in the Opening Ceremonies for the last Melbourne Commonwealth Games (that is quite a magical version as it was with the MSO). It's also been in quite a few movies - the most famous of which is Donnie Darko (it's played in full across the party scene). It's a great song. They really are a fab band. They really do that post punk jangly guitar thing beautifully. Unguarded moment, I'm almost with you and Metropolis are also worth checking out. Metropolis has a similar feel to this one.

Great to get back to Chris’s copious notes, the Thamesmen would not be the Thamesmen without their antipodean muse. Another Aussie band I have never heard of but yet more evidence that global distribution of music failed dismally until the invention of the internet. Having a couple of tracks also helped make a good introduction to the band and gave a smidgeon of the feel of those great focus weeks that you used to do. Great to see the whole team back working together and the channel picking up speed again. Keep pedalling chaps!
@neumanmachine3781
@neumanmachine3781 3 ай бұрын
They really did have a rotten time with distribution. They had no UK label for most of the '80's and unlike most of their contemporary Antipodean artists, decided to remain in Australia instead of decamping to London. They got dropped by their US label after their first album (the label wanted them to release music similar to the Little River Band and they refused!) and dropped by their second US label after their fourth album - so it wasn't until they got dropped by their Australian Label - also after their fourth album 'Heyday' another masterpiece in their collection that they got a proper global contract with Arista that they got some momentum, but that only lasted a couple of years and then back into the indie wilderness they went...

My favourite band of all time - Tantalized is from their 1985 album Heyday which was released while I was in high school and was the album that made me a convert. Depending on how they count them they have about 27 albums or so (the band considers some of their '80's EP's to be album status) and the output is consistently good - they only have 2-3 lesser quality releases in the catalogue. Steve Kilbey (singer, songwriter and bassist) is Australia's most prolific songwriter, with over a thousand published songs over a 40+ year career. Kilbey has a prolific solo career as well as multi-album collaborations that are full discographies in themselves - check out his Kilbey Kennedy collabs in particular. He's the sole remaining member of the original and 'classic' lineups (first drummer only lasted about a year and only appears on the first two singles and the first album). The classic lineup of Kilbey, guitarists Peter Koppes & Marty Willson-Piper and drummer Richard Ploog lasted about a decade from the 'Too Fast For You' double single/EP through their most popular period from The Blurred Crusade through to Starfish (Under The Milky Way) and the follow up Gold Afternoon Fix (although Ploog barely played on that, being replaced by samples of his own playing on a drum machine on most tracks). Jay Dee Daughety replaced him for the next two tours and album (magnum opus Priest = Aura - check out this album it will blow your mind! The band ran out of money and success by the end of 1992 and Koppes left and the band was officially a duo of Kilbey and Willson-Piper for the next two albums (Sometime Anywhere and Magician among the Spirits) although Koppes returned as a guest player on some tracks. Session drummer Tim Powles played on both albums and Koppes rejoined for the MATS and Powles was made an official member. This lineup lasted for another 14 or so years and was the lineup for the performance of Tantalized on the video. They released seven full 'official' albums (with some level of promotion and touring) and another five or so outtake/remix/soundtrack/jam albums (some of which are more interesting than the 'main' albums of that period - Check out Back With Two Beasts in particular). Willson-Piper left in about 2010/11 and was replaced by Ian Haug of Powderfinger and this lineup released a further two albums, before Koppes retired from the band at age 64 about five years ago, leaving Kilbey the sole owner of the name 'The Church'. He recruited Ashley Naylor from Australian band Even (also played for Paul Kelly's band and is a noted Australian session guitarist), and Jeffrey Cain - from American group 'Remy Zero', who Kilbey had made two previous collaboration albums with under the name Isidore went from touring instrumentalist to full member. This current lineup has released two concept albums around the theme of a washed up musician using a strange device called the 'Hypnogogue' to draw music directly from his subconscious, which has taken their music to another level - check out the video for the title track of the first album in the series 'The Hypnogogue' - it's a mind-bender and the visuals are great too!

If you saw Donnie Darko, that might explain why Under the Milky Way sounds familiar. It was part of the soundtrack, playing when Donnie was wandering around the party at his house. Kilbey wrote it slightly off his neck after sneaking a doobie at his girlfriend's house and that it probably the best way to listen to it, esp the studio version with the insane E-Bow bagpipe effects. REM used the tech to different but equally arresting effect on E-Bow the Letter.

You have to listen to "What's a Few Men" and "Under the Sun (Where I come from)" by H&C, of course Midnight oil you know about already.

Alex, I can’t believe you hadn’t heard of The Church! The live version of Under the Milky Way is a bit lacking for me. It’s such a beautiful song and I wish the vocals had been a bit more prominent. That version of Tantalized was 🔥

Under the Milky Way is on my playlist, so I hear it whenever I'm driving, which unfortunately meant that I was disappointed with the first performance. The lead singer has such a distinctive voice and I love the feeling and atmosphere it invokes, especially on the words where he's whispering. The second performance was amazing ❤

Like most of Church's output but the first six LPs are the best for me and Blurred Crusade means the most - still have my first press Aussie version (which I based the Discog entry on)

I saw The Church Llive in a club in Montreal, late 80's or early 90's, I can't quite remember, but they were opening up for Echo and the Bunnymen. A classic roster mismatch as The Chruch absolutely blew away Echo! They actually had to come out for an encore, which is rare for an opening band. The crowd quickly thinned out once Echo and the Bunnymen took the stage. This is a great band, brings back memories for me.

Ok. Firstly, UTMY replaced The Killing Moon, which was the original opening track. Second….Depp is not in, nor does he have anything to do with the film. It’s Jake Gyllenhaal.

My sister-in-law’s big claim to fame is that she was in the same class as Steve Kilbey at Lyneham High. The Church are the best thing to come out of Canberra. Not an enormously high bar, to be fair. To be frank, this live version sounds a bit like the batteries on the cassette player have been left to go flat. Too many drugs in the 80’s, I think.

Yeah, live is great, but it's not always better, especially with iconic songs, was a little disappointed with this version tbh. The other one that always sticks in my memory was the version of Throw Your Arms Around Me that they watched, which was a very uninspiring rendition of that song, lol. There's a reason the original version of the song didn't really make an impact, so I didn't quite get the choice to showcase it.

Its a pity Marty Wilson-Piper totally dismisses the Church these days. He wont even mention or acknowledge them on his blog. He and Peter Koppes are fantastic guitarists and worked brilliantly together. Saying that, The Church is still ongoing and producing fantastic music. Their latest album is excellent.
