Keven, I love the passion. That said, the amount of times you interrupt an active speaker is rude. I feel this way about the majority of conversations you're a part of. Allow guest speakers to complete a full thought before you jump in. It'll make for better interviews and viewing.

If Keven was talking about the 2023 Masters I agree about the pattern. I worked it and saw very little urethane AND guys didn't have stand in front of the ball return and launch it 20 feet late in a block.

Keven talking about the separation between what the people see on TV vs bowling and golf is because of how easy league shots have been made. Houses have done everything they could to retain bowlers over the last decade or so and that includes setting shots where people have unreasonably high averages for the skill they've actually developed. They will never bowl in a regional qualifier let alone a week long qualifier on a real pattern to appreciate how much harder tv patterns are. Let alone the 100 plus degree weather created by the lights and machinery and people packed into the building on telecast day

I agree. It sucks because there are way too many people with a 200+ average. Also it really sucks when you finally do get to bowl on a sport shot and it's a huge kick in the nuts cause you're used to house conditions. My first time ever it was brutal. Sport shot tournaments aren't exactly common either.

I think Nick is right with urethane. Hook the lanes is amazing. That showcases something hard to do. Fans don't know that urethane is just as hard. It's not flashy enough to tune in for 2 hours. Keven get over it, you asked and you got it.

@@strongereveryday2302 is it unfair, absolutely. That's not the topic. The question is, to bring more viewership and popularity to bowling, would you sacrifice urethane balls? Of course a study would need to he done that correlates the theory. Thus, Keven derailed the discussion and should be debating the correlation of banning improving viewership, leading to more money.

Someone with a broadcasting background chiming in here: Asking Keven to hold back his passion, which a bunch of folks in here have done, is a tough ask. It's hard to tell someone whose passion has clearly fueled him to success in multiple areas to dial it back and still have the content he's part of seem natural. This is episode 1, not episode 100. There's a balancing act to podcasting with multiple hosts, and it's not easy to do (even for trained professionals). Keven and Packy will get the balance right with more reps, and when they do, this'll be a fantastic listen (it's already really good).

Definitely need to let people cheer and chant just like other sports. That is why some of my favorite shows are the PBA Playoffs and PBA league matches at Bayside Bowl. They cheer, chant, and have fun all show long. So much more fun to watch.

I think Keven is right, there needs to be cheering for who you want to win and booing for who you dont want to win. That alone would make bowling alot more enjoyable to watch. I try to watch bowling everytime it comes on and have been since the late 80's.

Can’t get down with this. Booing at a team is one thing. You boo the Celtics and it’s millionaires losing one game out of 82 and it doesn’t mean that much. You get bowling on TV and they’re FIVE FEET away and the pro is trying to feed his family while some dork is telling him he sucks? Cheer for your bowler, fine. But booing and getting shitty with someone doesn’t feel appropriate when they’re right there next to you.

I definitely think if the tournaments were more accessible for people to watch it'd do a lot for the sport. Events like the PBA League or US vs the world helped a lot. They also need to televise the stepladder head to head matches on tv or youtube as well. It would skyrocket

The league this year, with your mic’d up coverage is cool. Need this for every team, not some vanilla 30second recap. Sure some channels that’s what they expect but on yt, no, this is your chance for more. Honestly you guys are doing so much for making this more.

Adding to what you all where talking about with the Elite League, I feel that is in the best position to help grow the popularity of bowling. The baker style of bowling is by far the most exciting from the fans point of view and this is coming from a bowler/coach. Watching teams of the best compete against one another on a weekly bases in a 90-120 minute format would be great and I think could draw fans to centers and TV. If the PBA could figure out a way to push it to 12 teams and then actually draft bowlers to small 1 or 2 year paid contracts for each team it would be awesome to have a short 8 week season at the end of the regular PBA season. Make two divisions and take the top three from each and then have a one weekend playoff to cap it off. It could give 72 bowlers (if it were 6 person teams) some guarantied money what is badly for needed and put the spot light on lots of bowlers not just the top 5 or 6. I know that all takes money but I think in the long term it would be easier to advertise the sport and make people want to watch if as a fan I know my team the Motown Muscle with EJ is bowling LAX with Belmonte at 2pm on Sunday and I'm excited about a newer bowler that signed on to the team this season to hopefully make a difference.

This was great convo. I think you need to use Reverse Planning to figure this out. Figure out everything that would be the ABSOLUTE best for more viewership and engagement, then back off a little to compromise with the actual bowlers. Viewer and attendant engagement is what will drive increased viewership and sponsorship. More viewers = popularity = sponsorship = MONEY!... more money in everyone's pockets

This was some great discussion on the sport. Kevin keep speaking your mind without discussion there will be no change. I really enjoy bowling myself and watching you guys on tour but there are many on tour I do not enjoy for the reasons you have pointed out - boring and solemn like the family dog just got run over. Very good points on other sports compared as well. The vast majority of people outside the sport do not understand. My youngest son was averaging plus 220 high school and a bunch of kids at high school would say ya cool but I can do that too I shot 220 once. Great stuff with the show - Keep the house rolling

Im glad there is another podcast out there for bowling. I also like the conversation of what would make bowling more popular. Keven is right to a degree. I would love to see if a pro goes brooklyn, the whole crowd chant " YOU GOT LUCKY!" over and over, but bowling crowds shouldnt be trained like a WWE audience of when and when not to cheer as well. Anything genuine is better always, and that what I think Keven is trying to point out haha. The Urethane conversation, I completely agree with Nick. Ban Urethane. Only reason is it takes away the skill of the bowler of dealing with transition. Thats the name of the game. Who makes the best adjustments at all times instead of rolling it up 5 every shot. I think that is Nick's point.

There is one bowler who I think of who had more influence on me as a sportsman. He brought tons of entertainment and fun into bowling. That man was Steve Nagy. I recall him running his shot out while traversing three or four lanes on TV and mashing the pocket frame after frame. I've always wanted to bowl like he did!!! He made bowling FUN!

We are seeing this in golf now as well, “post Tiger”, but IMO, team concept will help both sports grow. Fans love to root for teams. Guys can be themselves and talk crap. I love the team format in bowling end of season at Bayside. Tons of energy and excitement.

Been there: there’s a 3 ball tote that I launched in a marsh behind Carolier. I got knocked out a stepladder with a blowout 7-10 and threw my hammer toxic down the parking lot. It happens.

To get more viewers, maybe consistently more prize money. PGA golfers win more money in one tournament than many PBA bowlers win in a career. Back when Chris and Bo were broadcasting the Pro Bowlers Tour on regular television at the same time and same station year after year, they had a huge audience. It was a popular program. Bowling was doing well. Now, only those who can afford cable/direct tv can watch and the schedule is not consistent.

I'd love to see more tournaments structured in brackets according to seeding/points, with some spots in say a field of 128 bowlers, much like a tennis tournament. Having more tournaments where bowlers face off head to head in rounds 1-4, a quarterfinal, semifinal, and final. Televise some of the early rounds, and then stream or televise the quarters, semis, and final. More tournaments at a B-level/challenger, with a 64 player field head to head. If you make the top 64 or 128, you should get some cash. Winning a PTQ can get you points for future tournaments. Winning a B-level tournament gets you points for the A-level tournaments. Press conferences after each win/loss with the bowlers. We need to see more than the top 6 players in a stepladder on TV. Also, players should lobby for royalties for all the reruns of past tournaments that they appear on TV.

I bowled professionally in 1989. While I realize the cores and surface changes are much more complicated today (I did a very brief stint for a couple regionals and tourni’s 2011), we never had ball reps and the idea we would sounds kind of funny. As pros, it’s pretty much your job as a pro to understand how to adjust on your own and pick the equipment on your own frankly. It seems like a lot of the guys that aren’t doing well are asking for the most help from reps on how to move, when, and what to throw. In my day, that didn’t exist. I wonder what it would be like if the ball rep and coaching was removed from the tour again. Honestly, shouldn’t it be the responsibility of the bowler to take care of their own decisions?

If you want a real challenge, come to Waverly, IA and bowl at the Waverly Bowl Inn. Back before covid shut the place down for a few years, the running joke was, establish your average there, you'll bowl 20+ at any other house... and it wasn't entirely a joke. It's a cozy house, but the lane topography is... not great, lol. But I'd be happy to teach Packy a thing or two if he ever came by here :p

I think the solution is to have a pre-tournament tournament, instead of a pro-am, allow armature bowlers to bowl on the same pattern and the winner is in the field. Not the same as the PTQ, none of these bowlers can have their card. Then before the show starts, show the results.. take 30 seconds to show how the local 220 average bowlers averaged 180 on the PBA pattern. This would show how difficult it is.

From a TV perspective, I'd like to see more than 5 bowlers. If they went to a March Madness style format and had 4 lanes up. #1 seed plays #8 seed, #2/#7 and see who meets in the middle. Would give exposure to more bowlers/styles.

Here is a good idea for a video collection. instead of bowling for a 300. try to bowl the lowest game possible without a gutterball. making 20 a perfect game. and if you throw a gutter ball or miss a pin its plus 10 pins. This was good practice given me by my coach when i played juniors. and in my opinion its harder to bowl a 20 game with a ball missing a pin. compared to bowling a 300 game. And see how long it take to achieve the perfect 20 game on video would be amazing to witness.

Thanks for the content! Just wanted to say one thing about the urethane in my opinion: It's not only boring to watch reactionwise, and it makes the gap between the viewers and the bowlers even larger (because 99% of bowler dont have 450+ revs), they even look boring. Like, there are literally 2 urethane balls right now in the PBA legal (right?). And they are plain black and plain red. No one can even be "the guy that throws iq78u" because everyone on Storm does it. If there were 18 urethane balls on the market, like there are 90 reactive balls, it maybe would be a little bit different. Global tried it, no one wanted it apparently. The other way would be: Just one ball. Everybody uses the same ball. But then, money gone from the business.

I actually really liked this podcast a lot. A lot of good ideas for how to make the tour better. I think if they made the tour season more of a season and restructured the names it would draw in more people. Like my friends were watching the WSB with me and they were like oh so this is the championship and I was like no. They were also confused why the pba playoffs were after the world series of bowling and then they asked if the TOC was the finals and I was like no and they were so confused. Mostly all major sports have a finals champions aka Super Bowl, World Series, nba finals, Stanley cup etc. Ours is sort of the Tour Finals and it’s on cbs sports network when the rest of the season is on Fox and FS1. You gotta give fans structure on the season and get them hyped for the finals or else they won’t care.

I would encourage everyone to check out the 2008 geico team shootout for a great example of outdoor professional bowling. Super cool, and everyone is talking and not keeping their voices down. Imagine that in a small stadium, 5 dollar tickets, just pack em in tight no matter the cost. The drama that would ensue from blaming the weather or the sun. A bird craps on the lane and creates a psuedo oil buildup. It's TV gold just waiting for us to grasp it once more. And watch that endless 10th frame around 30 minute mark. Another thing we need back.

TV = money, they need to televise the qualifying not just the "top." Could you imagine if we only televised playoff basketball or baseball? no one would care. They need to do a format more like golf where they follow pairs/players and bounce around. Hope you guys can influence the PBA to televise more bowling.

I would love them to experiment with 1 event where its more like baseketball (the film) where you can try to psych-out the other bowler (within reason for television, no swears) absolute no sportsmanship event. The whole crowd is crushing empty bottles when Belmo or Rash bowls, would be funny AF.

There needs to be competitive integrity though. Big games are fun, but if it’s always a shootout it takes away from what makes the sport a sport. I actually think easy house shots need to go away. The logistics are hard because people would initially hate the lower scores, but if people had a better awareness of how hard these patterns can be and have a better understanding of how good a 200 on something challenging can be it would lead to a greater appreciation in the long run

I really believe, bowlers really should be allows to express themselvss more.... excitement, frustration, and light hearted trash talk are all part of sports in general...I dont want to feel like im entering a church service...and this goes for all sports and organizations the athletes are the ones who bring in your money and should be allowed to criticize without being fined

Long ago I bowled with a guy who randomly, to be funny, would grab the back center belt loop of a bowler as he was standing on the approach ready to take his first step. Funny reactions from viewers occurred, but it wasn't so funny for the victim.

I watch old bowling and they show the prize money, they don't do that anymore. Bring that back. I get it, bowling on tour is harder than house shots, but 300 games are so commonplace now thanks to the equipment, people can't appreciate the difficulty level anymore. Oh and most people can't afford an arsenal of more than 1 or 2 balls.

Why not replicate the same crowd energy/environment as the PBA Elite League? Let players have a few buddies, ball reps, coaches...you name it ...with them as they bowl, similar to league play. Encourage the live audience to cheer and go ape sh*t during a shot. Also, although probably too late, produce a Full Swing/Drive to Survive-type docuseries. Fans connect with that behind the scenes content, ask Formula 1.

Less Kimberly would be great Better announcer- Randy is fine but get someone good like norm with him. It doesn’t have to be commentator / color guy. Get 2 pros talking thru the show
