I've picked the Greek church 3 times, I've always gone at it like a 6, 7, 10 split. Aim for the ten and slide the six, it's easier if you don't flat wrist it. The tiny amount of hook helps the entry angle to slide that 6 with enough pop to take out the 9, but it can deflect and take out the 4/7.

I think Frankie was onto something with the last shot. With Mitch's ball speed, him hitting the 6 on the left side to run over the 9 could possibly kick it out the back and shoot it towards the 4-7 while the 6 pin has a chance to bounce off the side wall would possibly up Mitch's chances of making the Greek Church. Overall, Great video, and loved the Frankie coach cameo!

Never thrown anything but a house ball here, but I’m fascinated with bowling and have watched plenty. My question, is there any standardization of the area behind/beside where the pins sit? Sometimes it seems the knocked down pins bounce back “into play” a lot, at other locations it seems they almost always stay out of play once knocked down, am I imagining this? Are there different brands of lanes with different dimensions at the end where the pins and ball are collected?
@JesseUnderscoreMartin

I'm wondering the same thing
@kleshreen
@kleshreen 2 жыл бұрын
There is a standard, but it is more of a range you can fit in to. Some centers have shallower gutters alongside the pins, which allows for more bounce along the walls. Other centers might have shallower pits behind the pins which allows for more bounce forward off the back wall. Others just have nothing but the curtain there that kill any bounce out of the back.

I'm a lousy bowler, so just seeing you get the pins to bounce back onto the lane out of the back so frequently was really impressive.
@pullt

Not that impressive, tbh. The way that curtain is setup right up behind the deck makes getting a pin to bounce back 1000x more likely than on a normal lane.
@jvmiller1995
@jvmiller1995 2 жыл бұрын
@@pullt Are you saying that these lanes have been altered or not sanctioned? I mean certainly different model pinsetters can vary curtin size and some have stiffer curtins and the flexibility can change as they age. But you make it sound like this pin sitter and lane is abnormal as you said. Some pin decks have more action than others. That is a fact of bowling.
@pullt
@pullt 2 жыл бұрын
@@jvmiller1995 The curtain that is behind the lane is positioned way closer than usual. I don't know if by the book it is outside of regulations, but it certainly causes more pins to bounce out.

@jvmiller1995 2 жыл бұрын
@@pullt So they unbolted the curtain and welded new mounting brackets on the pinsetters frames and bolted them closer than the factory ones on all 48 machines? Just to make this video!! Do you know how ridiculous that sounds? Have you ever even seen the backside of these machines? I have been bowling over 25 years and I have worked at a alley in the back at a few houses. In fact I weld up many of the stainless parts on these machines when they break for the owner of my current bowling house. Like the pin plows that crack over years from flexing. I just repaired one a couple months ago. So excuse me if I call BS. I mean you can see the curtain position from a camera angle about 80 feet from the pin deck?
@pullt
@pullt 2 жыл бұрын
@@jvmiller1995 From what I understand, the curtain is flipped over and attached the same way to the mount, just that it sticks out further. I'm not suggesting they welded anything on. I've also bowled for decades and that many pins bouncing back onto the lane is highly unusual. Sure, the guy is a great spare shooter, but on a typical lane, dead perfect accuracy doesn't produce those results

I've picked this up a few times in my life and every time I did it was by hitting the far right side of the 6 pin. I personally wouldn't even bother shooting at the 4-7. Focus on obliterating the far right side of that 6 pin and your percentage of picking up the spare increases tenfold.

@bccarl88
@bccarl88 3 жыл бұрын
I always go for the three because if you hit it correctly, the 6pin will deflect off of the 9pin and will change its path towards across the lane into the 7pin. (Well in my case as a lefty, I go for the three on the left and the 4pin will deflect off of the 8pin). The “miss” area for going for the three pins is slightly greater than sliding the 4pin into the 8pin. It’s easier to create that angle of deflection when the pins are closer together.

The only reason it's considered harder than the 7-10, is because it's not left as many times as the 7-10, therefore it's not thrown at as often. A guy did a study on it using data from 2003-present PBA tournaments, and the church was only left 785 times, compared to 3069 times for the 7-10. Statistically speaking, it's harder, but in reality the 7-10 is still the hardest. There is no way to pick up the 7-10 without a little luck. I've been bowling for 45 years and have yet to pick up the 7-10, but have gotten the church a couple of dozen times. I'd link it, but not sure if that's allowed. Just look up "hardest shot in bowling" and you'll find the article.

I have been bowling about 25 years. I finally picked this up tonight. Got it with my gold belmo spare ball. I left the 4,6,7,9,10. I drilled the 6 10 and the 9 shot across the lane taking out the 7 and bounced off the wall and got the 4. I was pumped up after that and on the next frame I pulled my ball and I left the 10 and then opened. My only open for the night. But I still had a 714 and it was a great night of bowling. (Greek church) check, (Big 4). check, (300) check, (700) check. Now I need to pick up a 7 10 and roll a 800 and I can die a happy man.

In my brain, the right side is the only way to go (assuming righty here). Not only is it better count, but if you put a bit of hook on it and try to hit the 6-10 pocket, you can either slide the 6 over OR you can get a lucky deflection of the 6 off of the 9.

In past years I've picked the 7-10 twice and the BIG 4 twice in league. For one BIG 4, I cut the 6 very thin... it slid vertically a ways before falling and sliding into the 4. Then the 4 fell into the 7. For the other BIG 4, I cut the 6 very thin and it slid into the front of the 7.Then the 6 deflected into the 4. Of course the ball took the 10 both times.

I did the binomial distribution math, and the chance of getting at least 1 out of 48 is 13.43%, if the chance of success on a single trial is 0.3%. A more detailed analysis: Chance of getting exactly 1 is 12.5%, exactly 2 is 0.88%, exactly 3 is 0.04%.... chance of getting 48 out of 48 is exactly 1 in 1.25 sextillion googol (seriously). Of course, by shooting Greek Churches all day, he is likely getting better at it, so the chance might be improving above 0.3%.

Great video, love the ending! Props to you & Mitch & the whole crew. What about a 4-6 challenge? I once saw a guy pick that up in league believe it or not. (& he didn't even bounce the pin out!) He just feathered the 6 over perfectly sideways by catching it ever so lightly. (It's basically a test of can you get your spare ball to hook late. I'll never know how that ball stayed on the lane & caught the side of that pin. I'd love to know the margin of error on that shot to do that.)

do you all use the same weight in your spare ball as your other balls or do you go lighter? just wondering. I throw a lighter one so I can throw it at times harder.

you should try hooking the ball at it so you can get the ball right next to the pin

so many shots so very close to what potentially would make it. Not one shot that had no chance even when he only got 1 pin he was close to what it would take to kick the pin to the other side. Halve way through I do not think any shot was off by more than an inch from where he is trying to put it. That is incredible in my book.

I had the Greek Church 5 times in the last month, made 2 and picked out the 6-pin on another. What’s the percentage on that??

To me it seems like the best way to attempt that is to slide the 6 off the front of the 9 pin and careen it into the 4-7. To that end you almost need to take a little bit of the speed off and let the 6 stay on the deck instead of blasting it back. I've seen that spare made in person only once in my life and that was by a 15 year old high school female bowler who did not over power it. It was the opposite Greek church but she just played the 4 off the 8 pin straight into the middle of the 6-10.

There was something off about that Frankie attempt…. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but there’s something fishy…. 🤔

I was waiting to see a different angle attempted when throwing at 6-9-10. Throwing straight up the right side would allow the ball to hit the 6 pin more on the side, causing it to kick across at hit the 7 pin more to it's front side, giving the 6 pin a better chance of clipping the 4 pin.
