The Nerd has certainly changed in recent years, and while current AVGN may not have quite that same initial spark that the Nerd had in his prime years or the era of his best episodes around the late 2000's to early 2010's, but at the same time the AVGN series is still legitimately fun and entertaining to watch to this day, and it's one of the very few legendary internet series that has managed to maintain consistently good (for the most part) for 2 whole decades! The same can't be said for a lot of long-time KZbinrs who went way downhill and overstayed their welcome, including the Nerd's most hardcore rival the Nostalgia Critic. (Screw PewDiePie VS T-Series, Nerd VS Critic was a true legendary internet rivalry!) But unlike Doug Walker, James Rolfe is also one of the very few internet celebrities who is still completely well-respectable, without getting himself into any petty drama/controversy like a lot of KZbinrs seem to can't help but do... Anyway, while the current 2020's era of AVGN episodes may not be "as" consistently good as the previous decade or 2, but that's not to say some of them aren't still enjoyable to watch. In fact, in recent years there's even been a few occasionally incredible episodes that I'd put on-par with some of the best AVGN episodes ever made! Such as Ecco the Dolphin, Commodore 64, Fear and Loathing in Vegas Stakes, the DOOM episode, Beating Jekyll and Hyde, and even his Final Fantasy 6 episode that came out near the end of 2023, you can't deny those episodes were pretty awesome! Is current AVGN perfect? No, not by any means. Cinemassacre's partnership with Screenwave has definitely hindered some things and held James back in some ways, and NTM James also having to raise a family simultaneously amongst other stressful responsibilities on his shoulders probably doesn't help either. Honestly when factoring those things in, it's kind of a miracle that recent-years' AVGN episodes were as good as they are, even if they're nothing spectacular nor as good as they used to be. I'll take decent over dog shot any day of the week.

In french-speaking countries we have an equivalent called "Joueur du Grenier" (JdG for short, litterally "Player of the attic"). It was openly inspired by the AVGN at first, but as time passes, it got in the opposite direction. The basic formula and humor are still the same as before, but the quality keep going up and up. With figurants, special effects, full scenarios and all, without losing the spirit of the serie like so many other. The AVGN even did a cameo for the -10- 11 years anniversary episode a few years back.
@elfrangofrito7 ай бұрын
There's even a brazilian equivalent. The channel is called Colônia Contra-Ataca (Colony Strikes Back, yes it's a Star Wars reference), created by Wilson Rafael de Azevedo Mr. Wilson has done some great videos in his apex, but nowadays his videos have gotten a bit worse. This is mostly explained by him scaling the ambition of his episodes back down compared to his memorable Vinet saga, and him getting a bit too old to keep screaming all the time. But unlike AVGN, he doesn't look like he lost his passion in the slightest, he stated quite the contrary several times. He still loves his job wholeheartedly to this day. I recommend you watch the interview he did with AVGN, it's subtitled in English.

Just wait until the next AVGN episode comes out, there's a very good chance that it'll be good and all the people saying this crap will immediately change their minds once again. I've seen it happen several times before in recent years, where James tried something a little more experimental/different from the usual AVGN formula, and as a result a lot of people didn't like the episode and so they started saying things like "Man the Nerd has really gone downhill or hit rock bottom, AVGN ain't good anymore." But then eventually the next episode comes out and it's legitimately good, and all of the people who were talking trash about the previous episode then turn their opinions around and say "Wow this was awesome, the Nerd's still got it!" It happened with the Shrek episode, it happened with The Immortal episode, it happened with the Vegas Stakes episode (which was actually pretty good, but I guess for some people it was just a little too "different" from the Nerd's norm?), and it even happened with the Life of Black Tiger episode (in which coincidentally the Nerd played a modern bad game as well), and it definitely appears to be the same case with My Horse Prince as well. I've seen this pattern/cycle happen multiple times in the past few years, and there's a pretty good chance that the exact same thing is gonna happen once again.

It is a pattern for a reason: damage control. The only fully experimental episode from recent years acknowledged by James himself is "The Immortal" episode, all of the rest of the supposed "experimental" episodes is just cope coming from his fans - they're usually just a bad acted episode relying too much on a green screen. There's the Keith Apicary episode that James claims he was trying something different but it's not that different from some of the more slapstick episodes of AVGN... fans just didn't like it. I personally liked it, it fits with the Screwattack era of AVGN, which Keith was also part of... people unaware of that era lambasted James at the time and it really hit him... he even made a video "explaining" the episode - it was lambasted by the same fans who praise the lousy Screenwave era of episodes. For me, the movie's reception and the outcry about Keith's episode was the beginning of the end of James' enthusiasm with AVGN and the start of his creative cowardice and cynicism.
@redacted22757 ай бұрын
@@colonel1003Most people complain nowadays about James' lack of enthusiasm and the brutal cynicism and entitlement that he uses to address his critics. For example, the way he only does new episodes as an excuse to release sponsorships, not the other way around. Or his hair, a thing that he thinks everyone is out to get him, not giving advices or suggestions coming from a fan *of the character,* not James personally - he doesn't even consider that some fans don't care about him but care about the continuity of AVGN's story and he's a bad professional/lazy for not realizing that (and ironically, he's a "movie reviewer" of the nitpicking variety).

I think the reason he compared it to episodes like Hong Kong 97 and Big Rigs is because it's a game that goes past the shit scale. But the difference between those episodes and Horse Prince is that Horse Prince is an obviously bad game with barely anything to comment on. It gets old less than a minute in. It's like the Purr Pals episode where he just looks at Wii shovelware. The nerd commenting on a game that's obviously shit isn't funny. It's just too gimmicky. Hong Kong 97 works because he doesn't know what to expect and the game gets gradually more confusing. There's more to build jokes off of. When you look at games like Purr Pals and Horse Prince there's nothing to analyze. They're just flawed episode concepts from the start.

The main problem with AVGN nowadays and one major reason why the nerd acts so boring and out of character is most likely because James Rolfe himself is not longer the one writing the scripts and plots like how he did in the earlier episodes. This is especially noticeable in episodes from season 13 onwards. Even newer gaming KZbinrs known for their explosive rage and having the mouth of a sailor like Poofesure at least look and sound like something they genuinely made themselves, and not something that a media company makes which is unfunny and soulless.

One criticism I don't think really makes sense is the one about him burning the phone. Partially because part of the joke is that he's doing the exact same thing he made fun of her for & partially because his reason for doing it was different from hers & getting rid of a ghost/apparition/demon by destroying the thing it's coming from is a common concept so it makes sense he'd try it, especially since uninstalling would take longer & probably wouldn't even work. Also, that one really old skit with the power glove was worse. I can't really come up with much of an excuse for the bad visuals though. Maybe he was parodying bad phone videos because it's a phone game but I always say parody doesn't work when you just go all in on doing the annoying thing you're making fun of.
