In this latest installment of CBS News Assignment America, Steve Hartman visits an animal sanctuary where a dog and an elephant have formed a very lasting, and unusual, friendship.

This will always be relevant. That's the 1 of the beauties in life. To me. Seeing how such a big animal can have those feelings. Elephants are the greatest smartest animals on the planet. And that intelligence enables them to do amazing things. That story makes me cry every time I watch. But that's the most beautiful thing there is. Unconditional love

Brings a tear to the eye. Lovely how animals can interact. That shows real empathy, what friendship should be. Feeling each other. Remember anyone whose ever bullied anyone, or harmed anyone, does not really know what empathy means. These two get it. I love that there is an elephant sanctuary in my home state! This is the sweetest story ever! This reminds me of a time when I saw many crows watching in horror as another crow got hit by a car. They stayed with the body, a pack of angry and sad crows. It was so tense and incredible to see.

The Elephant Bella rubs the belly of the Dog Tara with the foot. And to think it was(and is still) chic in some circles to own/possess a lampstand made from an Elephant foot. I am less sad to have these beautiful, magnificent images of Bella and Tara for the rest of my life. Grateful to this sanctuary and CBS.

Beautiful Bela passed away several years ago. She had several bite wounds and they believe she was attacked by coyotes. Precious Tarra found Bela and tenderly scooped her up and took her back to the sanctuary office. Tarra also carried her back to the sanctuary when Bela hurt her back.
