So you're telling me even when the spartans weren't in their prime the still successfully repelled the romans (for a time) and kept their independence by fending of Phillip and Alexander
@Euro.Patriot
@Euro.Patriot 4 жыл бұрын
Sparta was so insignificant after the Battle of Leuctra no-one really gave a fuck about them. If Philip or Alexander attacked Sparta would be gone in a month. The Romans had a better military than than Greece not to mention other Greeks joined them when Rome came for Sparta so Sparta couldn't do anything. Philip and Alexander never attacked Sparta, Philip only made a threat saying if he attacked he'd win just for the Spartans to say "if".

Phillip never attacked, and Alexander originally didn't either until the Spartans gained aid from the Persians to attack macedon while Alexander was off fighting the Persian army. Even without him or the main macedonian army sparta got wrecked by the retainer force
@Ligierthegreensun

@@Euro.Patriot Phillip largely kept them around because everyone else feared and hated Sparta in Greece. They had successfully propagandized their supposed military might and their ferocity from the battle of Thermopylae, so even though they were a shadow of their former selves and were reduced to arming their helots, Phillip didn’t press the issue when they refused to join the league of Corinth, because he figured keeping them around as a boogieman could work to his advantage, and like you said, they weren’t a threat to him or Macedon.

Wait you faild to mention a key point here buddy. Sparta and Persia stroke a deal to take down together the athen's, the Persian king gave them better ship's as an act of revenge for the humiliation they suffered at the battle of marathon. Not to mention athens was plundere'd by plague which cut the population 1/3, the plague even took down the leader of the city state pericles, leaving them in total chaos.

I'd love to see an AC like game based in Mycennian Greece. A game based on The Odyssey in 700BCE would be great too. I'd love to go back to the days after King Midas' death, as his empire begins to fall & The Greek World falls into the warring state it would be in until Alexander The Great.

Tbh, that’s what I was thinking too when I was playing AC Odyssey. Mycenaean Greece is typically the setting for all of the Greek myths and legends that we are aware of. An AC game based on an era of famous mythological Greek heroes would be really interesting and maybe even Troy. Although it would eliminate the Classical Greek history because we’re further back in time, I’d still love to see it. I wonder what it’d be like playing in Mycenaean Athens or Sparta or Mycenae in its prime. Great idea. 🤙🏻🤙🏻

Not only Sparta wasn't the only city state involved in the battle of thermopylae, but it was the 700 Thebans who decided to stay for a last stand and convinced Leonidas to stay after the pass in the mountains was discovered. And it was not to delay the Persians but because it was an excellent defence position. Also, Sparta was not a military state but a slavery state. The fantasy about them being a skillful fighters was due to propaganda. You should also mention the long rivalry between Argos and Sparta, one of the triggers of the pelopennese wars, and the Dorian settlements (Syracuse). Movies are not history books. Please, do proper research

They were underfed and over trained. We all know where that ends up. Many of their customs were rumours created by people hundreds of years later. A lot of it is just "legends". If the Spartans were so great. They would have won sooner and easier. As well. The Persians were not asking for war. It wasn't 300 Spartans either. It was 300 Spartans alongside 8000 other Greeks! Persia literally did ask for earth and water! The empire was too large to sustain itself and needed soil to grow agriculture. Sparta was too close-minded and if anything. Far more primal/barbaric than Persia. They wanted war. Also, They straight up demonized Persia in the movie 300 and glorified the white Greeks. A common trope of western Hollywood. A proper movie would have shown just how reasonable Persia, it's generals and emissaries were. 300 was an action movie with few historical accuracies. Even if that crippled dude didn't reveal the goat path. It would have been found by scouts in the coming days.
@SpartanLeonidas1821
@SpartanLeonidas1821 2 жыл бұрын
Greece is definitely not the prime real estate to grow agriculture. Good for raising Goats, but not too many resources and not enough quality soil as it is 80% Mountains. Altho I do agree that Hollywood does demonize the Persians in those films for Americas own current political interests, it still doesn't take away the Greeks achievements against the Superpower of the day....the Achaemenid Empire.
