If the story and art of the manga arent good at the base, its impossible to expect miracles with the anime. Bleach has always been strong on these points. The problem was that development was very slow and the anime frequently caught up with the manga. If you read the Bleach manga you will realize that this anime adaptation is much more faithful than the original. I even dare to say that the current season is so good because of its fidelity to Kubo's work. It has nothing to do with today's animation. Which is obvious is that the more technology advances: the animation is going to be "more impressive".

From the bankai stealing to formulating a double that is strong enough to deceive Yamamoto and wear him down you can see how prepared they were for this fight.

15:10 Here's a quick summary of what their power is, Sternritter Y "The Yourself" is shared between the twins Loyd Lloyd & Royd Lloyd (dumb names I know). While both copy the appearance of their target only Loyd copies their power (FYI Loyd is the one that fought Kenpachi by turning into him); Royd on the other hand copies a persons memories & personality (hence why Yama was fooled so easily, plus blind rage didn't help). When you think about it Royd almost avenged his brother's death before Yamamoto showed up & the fact he was strong enough to hold back an enraged Yamamoto using the full power of his Ban-Kai when 4 others were 1 shoted is a testament to his strength. This isn't really a spoiler & since both have come & gone (and I doubt the anime will go back to explain because time), but if anyone thinks this is a spoiler I'm sorry.

Many paid attention to the animation in this episode, but the best part for me was the character breakdown of Yama and how well Ywach uses mental tactics to win instead of sheer power. Ywach had Yama's squad and lieutenant killed first, this ultimately turned Yama into a rage monster fighting for revenge - Here Yama is being completely spiteful, so instead of treating Ywach like a true threat and just erasing him, he tries to belittle, demean and torture him. In doing so, Yama isn't fighting like an experienced Commander which leads to him making the mistake of overusing his energy, which is why it was weak enough for Ywach to steal. (Repost)

@@666FallenShadow For Bleach especially this is true. There's tons of characters that fight for emotional or otherwise illogical reasons. Nearly half the cast fight like this. Kenpachi's one of the biggest examples of a blood knight, and characters like Byakuya (usually) fight for honor above reason. Heck that was Aizen's entire downfall. After he survived Gin's assassination attempt he thought he was unbeatable, and him getting cocky directly lead to his loss against Ichigo.

A detail I love about this episode is when it starts raining after Yamamoto stops his bankai. Not only it's a logic thing to happen (all the water that evaporated is now coming back), but in case you didn't notice, rain always means despair in Bleach, as such, when it starts raining you just know things aren't gonna be alright. Also, SPOILER in case them don't explain it in the next episode: The Sternritter Y is actually 2 people, the twins Loyd and Royd. Them both have the ability to impersonate people but in a different way. Loyd (the one Kenpachi killed) copies the powers of the one he impersonate, while Royd (the on who fought Yamamoto) copies the memories and personality of the ones he impersonate.

This was cut off from the anime so i will explain. Loid Loid and Roid Loid are two different persons, they are twins who were born with similar abilities. Loid, the one zaraki kills, can copy someone's appearance and strenght, and Roid, the one yhwach kills, can copy someone's appearance and memories. So Roid was already a pretty strong dude to be able to beat zaraki no diff and fight toe to toe with yama

Yamamotos bankai is the most strongest zanpakuto of the soul society because of his special abilities. His bankai resembles a compass based on his the techniques of his bankai. His bankai is almost the same temperature as the sun itself but hotter. It is said that yamamotos bankai is to be a powerful zanpakuto because of how he first used his bankai against yhwach 1000 years ago. That was my theory as a Manga fan.

As someone who has read the Manga. Stern Ritter Y (Royd Lloyd) is exceptional, I won't say anything, hopefully we will see their back story in the upcoming episode... If they add it but I'm sure you noticed that Zaraki already killed Stern Ritter Y. But if you look at the body of the individual that kenpachi defeated and the one defeated by Yamamoto. They are identical in appearance. I'm sure that you are already smart enough to understand what this means. That The Scrift Y, has two users who are both twins. Why it comes to Royd Lloyd. He was chosen for the task specifically by his majesty because of his incredible strength. Also due to his Scrifts ability copy someone's appearance and to see their memories, this was obviously clear to the viewer, as Royd Lloyd clearly recognized the faces of Yhwach's former comrades from a thousand years ago, despite him not being alive during that time (As Zaraki stated his twin, Lloyd Lloyd, had the ability to copy someone's appearance and powers, however he was limited due to the fact that once he copied someone at a certain power level all that person had to do was increase their level to overpower him). I personally rank him as one of the strongest Stern Ritter, based on the sole fact that a lot of what we saw in the fight was simply him using his Quincy techniques to face Yamamoto and Kenpachi.. Sankt Alter, Blut Vene, his reshi bow are techniques that all Quincy's given the proper training and vitality can use.(it does not mention anything in the manga however I believe that the sword he was using was probably a replica that was made of the sword that Yhwach used against Yama a thousand years ago, as he seemed to be familiar with the weapon "You've finally drawn it" ) He was able to defeat kenpachi (eyepatch on) with his base strength, that in itself is a truly incredible feat of strength and skill he didn't seem to have a mark on him. He was able to hold off head captain Yamamoto for a time(not physically, just for time, but surviving against the man well he's in that state is extremely commendable), at points even attempting to land blows on him. However I think his truest strength lies within what he was able to accomplish. He truly did trick Yamamoto he had no idea that the individual standing before him was not his nemesis and that truly cost him as you saw. Anyway I hope that cleared up any confusion you guys might have had. By the way this answer is just based on analyzing what we have seen in the anime not on any spoilers from the manga.

Y - The Yourself was _Royd Lloyd_ , the impostor guy who actually fought. Kenpachi also fought and killed the other Sternritter Y, Loyd Lloyd, Royd's brother. Royd was pretty damn strong actually and Yamamoto wasted a lot of power on him. He was mentally broke and raging. Yamamoto got weakened in mind already so he went all in and got Uno reversed in an instant. Great stuff!

Just to clear up some confusion there are 2 Y - The Yourself sternritters which are the twin brothers Loyd Loyd and Royd Loyd. Loyd Loyd can copy shape and power of another person. He used this power to fight Kenpachi and lost. Royd Loyd can copy shape and memories another person. He used his power to mimic Yhwach's mannerisms to fool Yamamoto, and was defeated by Yamamoto. It is assumed that either he was strong enough to beat Kenpachi on his own since his ability doesn't copy the power, just the shape and memories, or he was given more power by Yhwach to make him more stronger to fool Yamamoto better. tl;dr Royd Lloyd - "Y" for "Yourself" (Mimics appearance and powers of a target) Loyd Lloyd - "Y" for "Yourself" (Mimics appearance and personality/memories of a target)

16:00 "R" is Royd Lloyd the stern ritter Yama just killed. He has a twin name Loyd Lloyd. They both carry the letter "Y" as "The Yourself". Loyd Lloyd was the quincy who mimics Kenpachi's appearance last episode. He was shown for like one panel. I think the anime is gonna skip the twin explanation next ep because that's just a weird transition considering where the story is at now.

They decided to cut this little backstory from the manga but there is actually two "Y" sternritter, Lloyd Lloyd and Royd Lloyd, both twins iirc. both have very similar abilities with the difference that Royd (the one who fought yama) could copy memories and mind while Lloyd could copy power and techniques (the one kenpachi killed), both can copy appearance because of the "Y" the yourself given by yhwach. Royd was already very strong (or maybe he was given power by yhwach to perfect the impersonation we're not sure) so he just needed to have yhwachs memories and appearance to complete his impersonation.
