We wouldn't have Pokemon in the west AT ALL if 4Kids never existed. It probably wouldn't still be quite as big in Japan either. Also, Yu-Gi-Oh! Probably wouldn't be overseas (at least until much later) and what's more, I probably wouldn't be watching anime or playing as many RPGs today (since Paper Mario was one of my first video games, and I got into video games thanks to my Nanny's kid, I'd probably still be playing RPGs) if they didn't censor it to the point where they can (and did) market it to 7 year olds in the west. Because I WAS one of those 7 year olds, and unlike most 7-12 year olds, i was pretty big on rules. So yeah, I'm going to thank 4Kids for something. And its going to be sincere, unironic gratitude.

For anime dubbed in the last few years, I think this is mostly just people who don't speak japanese who actually have absolutely no idea if acting/writing is good in the japanese version "preferring" it because they can project their own ideas about the performances onto them, as they lack any the cultural/idiomatic knowledge to really be able to judge performances/dialogue that are written in Japanese for a Japanese audience. " Most dubs Funimation has done lately are pretty good, with solid english voice acting and pretty well written scripts that do a good job of rewriting the original dialogue to sound more natural in English, localize some references, translate culturally sensitive/specific material into an english language context, etc. There was a time when dubs were bad in the objective sense of being poorly localized, written, acted it -- but this hasn't been the case for english language dubs for a while and at this point the insistence that english dubs are but is just people who don't speak japanese but do speak english being critical of english media (because they speak that language and have consumed enough art/life in it to have a valid opinion on dialogue written in it/english performances) but not being equipped to do the same for Japanese media.

I get that some people like to picture certain characters together since sometimes the stories have multiple ambiguous love interests and people in genral like a nice love story but shippers like to put characters that have nothing to do with each other and would make no sense to see together, I've seen some of them ship characters from completely different animes then get mad and try to argue and insult anyone who disagree with their ship Some even send death threats over it, absolute Madness.
