I Japanese & watched this movie in the theaters. I was in elementary school at the time, Well ,It was not a silly movie for me . It was shocking new kind of anime. And even watching now , still think it’s a great film. Look at the quality. This was in early 80s. What I was into it back then, I was going crazy for gundam (1st) All boys were buying gunpla(plastic model toy) There were movies after anime ended. GundamⅢ and This GenmaTaisen were 2 big anime movies for boys and Genma was a new serious type of anime for little older people like high school I felt little scary when I saw it This was way before NES comes out

Harmaggedon was a crazy awesome movie!!! I remember watching back in the Golden Age of Anime. There was a little rental store we used to frequent back in those days and I remember my sister and I picking up movies and Super Nintendo games but it was either two movies or one movie and a game. My mom didn't really care as long as it kept us occupied while she got to go out with friends or whatever. Anyway sometimes we'd get something like Goonies, Gremlins, 3 ninjas etc. But once anime barely started gaining popularity in the West before it being played on tv and Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball etc we would check out the movies on hand mostly because of the movie covers. I miss those days. Not knowing shit about anything and just picking something up because "the cover looked cool." I remember seeing Ninja Scroll, Wicked City, Genocyber, Bubblegum Crisis, Patlabor, Akira, Alita, GitS etc. Harmageddon was one that really stuck out to me because of the stylized look. I really would like to revisit it again in my adulthood and explore some of the themes that I didn't really understand as a kid.

Fun fact: Otomo was a fan of the original manga, which is why he wanted to work on the film. Some of the key themes are clearly about overcoming prejudice, such as with Luna having to work with Sonny to fight Genma, and a very Osamu Tezuka esque "love all the creatures", presented in a very sincere manner, which although can be seen as a bit cheesy, considering the issues of climate change that we're going through, feels appreciated. Whats your interpretation of the last shot? For me, I feel that the deer with the eyes glowing is probably a reincarnation of Vega, which would make sense, considering theres a few Shinto and Buddhism references throughout the film.

What year did Otomo and Rintaro have that meeting, or the production of Harmagedon started? The first time Otomo did a manga about psychics, supercomputer and freedom fighters was in 1979 in a oneshot entitled "Fireball", and some of the scenes there (such as enormous energy ball explosion) are almost identical to the scenes in Akira manga, which was released a year before Harmagedon (1983) So if anything, I think the manga source of Harmagedon was rather the one that influenced Otomo in relation to the psychic boy trope, not the film.
@Stevem
@Stevem 4 жыл бұрын
Probs 1980/1981, but this was in production in 1982 at the same time as the manga began maybe even before that(yes before the manga didn't start releasing until december 82). What you are talking about is a one shot which yeah the original Genma taisen would have inspired, however this topic is much bigger than that, I'm talking about how it inspired the anime and the direction akira would take production wise. While akira began in 1982 did Otomo know it would have such a focus on ESP, was the time he spent on harmagedon the catalyst to bring it to the forefront of the story, that's at least in some regard what rintaro is implying that interview, perhaps through talking to otomo he revamped this old idea into a manga which was also obviously inspired by punk film makers like the creator of Burst City too. More so this video is about how genma affected the anime version but thats a much harder title to shape since you can make a case for both

He didn't make the film he worked on the film, it was that process of working with other animator as well as the genma taisen manga that inspired how the akira movie would be handled, we could also make an argument for rintaros effort to get otomo onto the film about esp left the subject as something he might come back to

I don't understand the dislike of this film. As a Gen X -er this film was awesome when I was a kid. It was way different than Yamato, Lupin, Galaxy Express, Yatsura, Gundam and others of the time. My friend's mother bought me a book of this film - in Japanese - which I still own. This movie isn't "goofy" it's pretty serious material in the age of nuclear war and "the Cold War" that many of us lived through going through air raids preparing us for the end of the world 😂. In the end, I think non- Japanese audiences really don't get this film. It may be dated however still groundbreaking and laid the foundation for what carnage we witnessed five years later in Akira.

This is a flawed but still unironically super fun movie that inspired way more than Chun-li. Presenting it as an "unloved infamous movie that's only relevant because of Otomo" is extremely silly and americentric given you yourself admit how huge it was in Japan later in the video. Please for the love of god don't go to Anime World Order for information, they get the most basic stuff wrong and will even practice complete ass-pulls.

Well considering this whole video is about how influcial it is of course I don't think that , just because I mention that yeah it was not well liked in America and for me the main reason I watched it is otomo , that doesn't negate every other point In the video , I know who my main audience it's Americans I'm not even American myself. When it comes to awo I'm literally quoting their guest talking about an audio commentary I don't have access to so yeah I think it would be hard for them to get that wildly wrong

@@Stevem I just think the description and start of the video focusing on it not being liked in America, only mentioning how huge it was in Japan later, is a questionable choice of focus and kinda paints the movie in a certain way that I dislike. Even if your main audience isn't Americans, it's not like there's anything about it that Americans are going to hate by default - not as long as they enjoy other old anime/manga that can be awkward and dated at points, but also great fun, like Cyborg 009. IMO it's just the opinion of a small group that this movie is horribly bad; most people in the US haven't even heard of it and I'm not the only one who watched it and thought "wait... this is pretty good". and yeah Patrick Macias has way more varied taste and knowledge than AWO and even told them they're too harsh on Harmagedon
@Stevem
@Stevem 4 жыл бұрын
@@deadstockparadise5898 I'm painting it's reputation within that community, it wasn't well liked that's it really the film hasnt seen a proper rerelease for the opinion of the community to change rapidly, and you need to understand when I say big in Japan i mean for 1983 which is RADICALLY different than big in japan now or post 1988, anime wise that year only 19 anime movies were made in total, half of those were sequels or tv re-edits. Roughly with inflation in USD since harmagedon came out it made 19 mil, Akira on release made with inflation included 100mil USD which would be even more now depending on all the re-releases and other gross, when harmagedon was released and advertised in the Uk here it was described as "Harmagedon ( Designs by Otomo)". You misunderstand my main audience IS american so im painting it for their lens , but im not american, I dont think the film is awful but I did find it a bit dull still an interesting footnote in anime history Yeah Patrick is good I want to read his books

Think it is a bit of a misleading title, it is clear from reading Akira manga and the film that no one film or source had influence on Katsuhiro Otomo. IT definitely will have had some influence, and the Chun Li thing is fascinating to hear about. I definitely going to try and watch this film LUL

I can't help but feel this movie and Godmars,the winner of the Anime Grand Prix back in 1982 was the start of the OVA vibe to it. GodMars was based off of Mars which was written and drawn by Mitsuteru Yokoyama who also gave us Tetsujin 28-go and Giant Robo. It's really ironic that both Shotaro Ishinomori and Mitsuteru Yokoyama's works are basically the start of the amazing OVA boom now that we think about it. Both Godmars and Harmageddon/Genma Taisen are works that deal with ESP-ers,intergalactic wars against demons,robots that help the main heroes and there's even teamwork and tribulations that came with it.

i was born in '81 (hence the username number) in the uk, so akira was my first anime ever, and i was hooked, its my fav. i musta awatched it that many times, i dont need subs anymore. anyway, finding hard sci fi anime like that is hard man, there aint much about without magic and stuff, blegh. so seeing this is a nice addition to my favs list of things like cowboy bebop, trigun, akira, freedom project, GITS, appleseed, etc, in fact thats another thing thats hard to find, animes about cyborgs or androids, that ISNT mecha. and is realistic. dont get me wrong, i like patlabor, and policenauts, but not gundam type stuff. but i loves me a realistic robot anime. and the only ones ive ever really found are appleseed and GITS, and bubblegum crisis stuff. but thats about it. so if anyone knows of any other hard sci fi realisticy futurey wibbly wobbly timey wimey anime. id love to know. i just saw a thumbnail for something called time stranger which ima check out, but any other realistic si fi would be awesome.

Just viewed this "Film". I had to read the Wiki entry for the OG Manga Plot just to have any chance of understanding what was supposed to be happening or why. Im sure people who had read the Manga back in the day might follow it, but for a casual viewer this seems like a big budgeted waste. I cound'nt care who they characters are or what happened to them. People popped in and out the story so quickly. And the music seemed way out of place. Kind of a mess. The creators had alot of money to throw around in those days. Had a feeling AWO had covered this, going to search that episode out.

if theres one thing ive always loved about a lot of japanese manga adaptations into film or series', they mostly (not always) stay true to the source, even sometimes, exactly the same, one punch comes to mind, as the series is practically panel for panel the same as the series. dragon ball is another one where a few adaptations are pretty much the same. i wish us westerners would do the same thing more. because like they say. if a story is good, its worth telling over and over again. so why change things? changing things is how you end up with scarlet johansen as the weirdest walking android ever. there are exceptions, akira being one, that manga is HEEUUGEE!! so im not surprised it was condensed ike that. but if they ever did a live action, or finger crossed a final fantasy advent childrenesque cgi version, id hope they stay truer to the anime movie than they dd with GITS. in fact just give me a verson of the akira animated film with the lip sync re-animated to go with english, now that would be something to see.

I wish I can read the book... The manga, not the novel. For one thing, it's made by Ishinomori Shotaro. As a fan of Cyborg 009, Kamen Rider, and his other tokusatsu heroes it's a must read. Also I like how he drew his manga; many of them are so out of this world I wish contemporary manga so what he did more.
