As a tezuka fiend, this movie is stellar. As a scrub who loves animation, incredible. As somebody who adores a good story, it still blows my mind. A silly pal o' mine argued that the movie was bad "because it missed the point of the manga" and that the plot was too flat. I just can't wrap my head around it. Isn't good animation good storytelling sometimes? The loving look on Red's face when Tima stares blankly forward? Or the absolutely fantastic pep Ban brings to every scene? Or the way the lights of the neon signs flicker in the dull, overcrowded streets? Rock's character is fantastic on multiple levels. Him being adopted by Red is a reference to the ending of Lost World (?) where after being horribly tortured, Red promises to treat him like a son. His disguise is also a refrence to his crossdressing tendencies, and him being an asshole is a refrence to him being an asshole. Those two seconds-Those two brilliant seconds- Where rock's eyes barely squint went Red visiously rips his armband off. It says it all. I'm sorry for the rant, but Metropolis has so many different levels of storytelling it would be shame to throw it out. If you really want to join the Rock Squad, I suggest the Vampires manga. It's very silly but there's a pretty interesting character study regarding Rock around volume 2 that steals the show. I'm sorry for such a long post. I really appreciate you taking the time to cover this movie.

Metropolis is one of the first Japanese animation film I was introduced to and it has been with me ever since, in my art and reference especially. It's beautiful. Again, great work on the video :)

This is the only movie out of the whole Madhouse month that I have some history with, and damn does it bring some beautiful and nostalgic memories, but in short: as a young, impressionable child, this film moved me in many ways. I have a difficult time explaining in a rational matter how Metropolis has stuck with me after so many years, so I'll just talk about what parts of it have left a strong impression on me: First of all, this was the first time I came into contact with the "Tezuka" style, and I remember being weirded out by, I also remember thinking to myself: "This reminds me of those old Disney movies on DVD", and boy was I right in retrospect. The music, THE MUSIC!! I just love it so much, the "Zone" themes will be stuck in my head for as long as I live, the OST is just so darn memorable. The finale: Ok, here's the BIG one... The final climax absolutely blew my goddamn mind, I couldn't understand a lick of English at the time, but Ray Charles "I Can't Stop Loving You" still makes my eyes water a bit. Sorry for being so sappy and emotional and incoherent, but the thought that this movie exists and that it unexpectedly came at such a critical time in my life just makes me happy (doesn't make for a decent critical think-piece though).

Is there a reason why Tima is the only character drawn in modern anime design. Looking incredibly cute and pretty? With round face, big eyes and slender body. I wonder if this was a certain nod to rise of moe\kawaii culture. How Otaku view kawaii characters like this. To present her look like nymph or goddess more beautiful than human. Especially that Chobits was released during that time.

Ah yes, my all times favorite movie ever. You really do know your stuff. I fucking love this movie so much. Detective Shunsaku is my favorite because of how he hasn't let Metropolis change him for better or for worse. He felt like the control character. This movie is very hard to enjoy for the first time but it really does hold incredible concepts that feel impossible to make sense of when you watch it for the first time

I recently had the pleasure of watching this on the big screen at the Tiff Lightbox in Toronto. I'd seen it before but just on a computer screen, seeing in a theatre was absolutely mindboggling, the animation, the artistry that went into this movie are at the pinnacle of the medium. I came out with a new appreciation of the movie and the work that went into it. This really is one of those movies that has to be seen on a big screen to get the full impact of, maybe not necessarily a theatre or home theatre setup, but even just a projector would do it alot more justice than just a laptop.

Stellar review. I decided to watch this movie off of randomly Googling anime movies to see, off of seeing a short brand new anime movie released on Netflix. I was surprised at how beautiful its animation looked. As of now I can't recall the name of the movie, but I'd be happy to go and search for it if any reply asking. Anywhom, this movie was many to pop up in relation to anime movies through a quick Google search, and I seemed was honestly eager to view it due to its cool-looking movie poster. New Year's of this year, I decided to stay up late at night and watch it in my room with headphones to "set the mood". I seen about 30 minutes of it, then fell asleep. I soon woke up at around the 55 minute mark of the movie and watched till the end. I teared up at the end. A few days ago, I decided to rewatch the movie and I don't regret it one bit. It's not as great as Akira, but still beautiful and emotional on as how they draw Tima and Kenichi together. I'll never forgive this stellar movie for pulling on my heart's strings.

Osamu Tezuka was a man ahead of his time. But some stuff of his older work was not made to be animated. Not saying all of his work should not be animated or should get an anime of his old work. (His manga Dorororo got an anime reboot of sorts and it was loved by many new fans not because Dororo is a popular girl from that show) I know some of his manga can work for new anime films or series depending if they give it new life. But one I wish had finished before he died was phoenix. He was planning to finish that until 2001 where the manga timeline for both the past and president should finally come together for I guess a huge battle or like both timelines to finally heal itself. But when he died. He probably never wrote down the ending so some never touched the manga until some years after his death and even in 2020. Some anime studios still make films based on some of his works from Phoenix. (Just slowly as some don't wanna rush it and try to plan how to make a film of some of those stories.) If we ever try to context his ghost in the afterlife? I would love to ask him how Phoenix was supposed to end. But yeah.

I was a kid when i watched this movie for the first time. At first sight, the art told me it was the kind of animation i was always watching in CN (kid's stuf), but then, the shit started and bullets where banging all around, and people was being hurt and the robots where treated as second class fuckers. After the end credits of the movie, i felt that i was older, i felt i had learned some things that i wasn't even supposed to look for at that time of my life.

Love the imagery of the movie, the story is far from great, but I like. Hate Rock with all my heart, and the ending is just heartbreaking! Great movie, never see the original german one, but I remember to hear that Tezuka never see it too, and he create all this stuff based on the cover of said movie. Metropolis from Osamu Tezuka, definitly is a recommendation to all fans of animated movies in general!

Osamu Tezuka has always been an inspirational mangaka for me. I found that apparently, in Hayao Miyazaki's book "Starting Point " (Shupatsuten), he burned his early drawings because they looked too similar to Tezuka's. Hayao also mildly criticized Osamu's simplistic style of writing , but I believe Miyazaki neglected Tezuka's later works (Metropolis, Black Jack, Ode to Kirihito, Midnight), which were much more philosophical and touched on many poor aspects of Japanese culture.

There's two stories to the one in starting point, Miyazaki is a spurned fan basically. Tezuka came in made a film at toei bare in mind this is before Miyazaki's time at toei and in Tezuka's version of the story he wants a character to die because he thinks it will be emotional poignant, he's told no by toei and you can't do that. SO what does he do he goes about Toei and grabs a bunch of animators and decides to make his own production house why can't he do things his way. Miyazakis version of events is that Tezuka wanted to kill this character and made her sick to save on frames so they wouldn't have to animate her at the end. Which is obviously the complete different philosophy miyazaki goes into animation with, Miyazaki thinks tezuka is this business man first. Both stories probs have some truth to it. But yess tezukas later work is really great stuff and his work has always been absolutely insane fast moving spectacles. Phoenix should be on that list and metropolis was one of his earlier works , this film version adds a lot more to it than the OG version, which while does go into post war cold war fear its mainly a fear of technology story

It's great that you highlighted some misconceptions I had about Miyazaki's constrained relationship with Tezuka Osamu, and I absolutely agree with you that Phoenix should've been added to my list of Osamu's philosophical manga. Tezuka Osamu has just always been an inspirational figure for me , and literally inspired me to become a mangaka, so when Miyazaki wrote in an newspaper article his later distaste for Tezuka's work, I was of course deeply saddened by this, so I further studied the article, which is how I conceived my very off conclusion. Nevertheless, I extraordinarily love both contemporaries and their animated masterpieces(I still haven't got an Astro Boy comic!), no matter if one guy disliked the other or vice versa. (Also thanks for explaining that Metropolis was one of Tezuka's early and not later works, I truly appreciate it. )

I remember having the VHS to this film awhile back, saw it once and never again. The thing is, I was around 13 years old at the time, so I am fairly certain that I didn't truly understand what it is the film was trying to do, for me it was just this weird flick. I personally have hard time justifying my opinions on the film, because whilst is interesting with its storytelling, visual flair, and symbolism. It's slow and contemplative and runs the risk of being boring. Even though I just said all that, it's still a great film, and a great one to end a career on. Rintaro will remain as one of the greats. I've seen much slower from Madhouse, Metropolis is 113 mins which makes is longer than a lot of anime movie but still pretty short. It is a much faster film than Metropolis 1927 for sure

Im curious if you are gonna tackle Texhnolyze? Its one of my personal favorites, its such a unique series that just really loves to tests its audience on how much they can handle what they are given especially the very first episode. while the pacing can be extreamly slow it does a fantastic job capturing the world that is slowly and dreadfully meeting its doom, it has a really fantastic atmosphere that at times can be very unnerving in a very minimal ways.

I mean it's from the same writer who did serial experiments lain after all the only difference is that Lain is rewatchable and not only for the sake of understanding the plot. Texhnolyze however well can't be considered rewatchable unless you have been too optimistic for past months. Despite me scaring you off it isn't ment to say you can't enjoy it at all there are many fantastic moments that are done masterfully , and of course it's stunning art direction, as expected when you have yoshitoshi Abe working on it (although he wasn't too invovled with the writing) it's that type of anime that doesn't seek to entertain and but to be as raw as possible

Tezuka characters are more like actors-- Thery're cast in various works like stars in a movie, type. cast even. Red, Lamplight, Hamegg, Atlas, even Shinsaku Ban and Kenichi-- You will see them in many others works as well. Rock is usually always the asshole.

Metropolis is my number 1 favorite anime. It's just something about it that makes me motivated and inspired. Also holmes is my first favorite antagonist. I never liked antagonists in anime. They're like a meh to me. but him. there's something about him that makes me like him.

Rintaro's adaptation of the grand, highly technological Metropolis (the one adapted by Osamu Tezuka, of course) has to be one of the most beautiful Japanese anime films ever made. Every frame could literally serve well as a painting in the form of a portrait.

Probably one of my favorite animated movies, surpassing several of the ghibli films in my mind. It was always so strangely underated. Almost no merchandise, when I first saw it there were legitimate animation cells from the movie selling for as little as $25 on eBay. Visually it's simply iconic, many of the character designs and backgrounds stick with you. The aesthetic and soundtrack alone capture the mind and hold it.

In trumps america this film really has a new telling. about kenichi- the name itself being japanese for "first" - i always thought it was subtly hinted at that he is actually a robot- the prototype for tima- hence why he stays behind with the robots- and why his uncle allows him- plus the way the robots treat him

I didn't know Otomo had a part in this anime. I watched it again for the first time in a few years and it reminded me of Akira, especially the character at the diner with the round sunglasses. It's a good anime, so much potential, but falls short. It's a shame.

I love this movie but I guess I do kinda agree with some reviewers about how there isn't a great plot.. everytime I've watched this movie I've loved it but when I think about it its really mainly because of the visuals I mean I haven't seen this movie in probably atleast a few years and I can't even exactly remember the plot but there is certain scenes that I still see clearly in my head because they looked so cool.

well not my argument, Birds point is that the rebels don't want communism they want a return to center by removing robots they start that revolution not by fighting the rich, but robots the lowest in the structure. The robots actually destroy the systemic later so you could argue they are the ones who have the actual communist revolution

this was such a weird movie, but damn fine one to watch as a kid, the feelings of boredom and excitement seemed to be mixed together while i was watching and rewatching it. now i have weird nostalgic feelings for this movie, i still don't like the art style, character design and aesthetics, but as a movie it's so damn well animated and well executed film with interesting story.

Tezuka was a wild writer and his stories went place otomo and rintaro build on top of that foundation to make something even bigger
