To me made in abyss is an ode to early explorers. How when early explorers on earth discovered new land often dying in the process, being eaten by cannibals or loosing limbs, but in their own head never regretting it and just as they themselves did not regret it nor did anyone cry over them instead celebrated their achievements. It's a madmans journey in the pursuit of beauty and a higher purpose while slowly being destroyed on the way there and loving every step of it in hindsight.

I noticed, too, that I had to keep reminding myself "these are literal children going through this scary abyss" whenever they made a decision or comment I didn't agree with. They aren't these experienced adult Black or White Whistlers who were trained to go deeper down and was prepped to never come back up. Sure, Riko is aware of those options also, but her willpower to make it to the bottom mixed with her naive thinking is blinding, while at the same time protecting her, from fully facing the harsh realities and suffering that could break her. I binged watched Made in Abyss last night so I can watch this video. It was worth it. Great job! I already clicked on the link to check out the website and trailer, but will click on it again later tonight to rent and watch the movie.

When you stare into the abyss, the abyss stares back I feel that what Riko is forced to face as she descends into the Abyss is also her own negative, what she, as a human being, pushes back. She has interesting parallels with the two White Whistles we got to see more of during season 1: she has the same sense of morbid curiosity Bondrewd has, which is the understanding that underneath order and "structural beauty", there are countless tragedies and horrors, embodied by the beautifully detailed and organized - but yet horrifying - life chain in the abyss which Riko is so obsessed about, and in an extreme, distorted way, by Bondrewd's experiments. Ozen is, as Reg defines her, a complete monster - and that's because she has seen that sense of tragedy for so many times that she's almost entirely consumed by it. Still, she maintains glimpses of humanity through systematical schemes, through order. She uses her hair to hide the scars that the abyss has gave her, in order to frailly remind herself that she is, or that she is at least supposed to be, a human. Riko, just like her, has a scar, but she is proud of it. As horrifying as that whole scene was, Riko is proud of that scar in her arm, because it's not just a mark of the abyss, but in her mind, it's also a mark that Reg was by her side. And there's that: Reg is the non-human character in the main duo, he won't suffer the curse of the abyss, and it's him the one who acts as Riko's moral compass - her biggest treasure not just in the sense that he's a relic, but in the sense that he is the one who keeps Riko grounded, the one who reminds her of her own humanity, as both Reg and humanity are fabricated by ourselves. When Ozen tells Riko she isn't supposed to be alive, Riko is somewhat shocked, but tries to articulate that she didn't go down the abyss expecting to live more, she just wanted to go down with Reg. There's this core element to her descent which I feel is often overlooked. She wanted to go down *with Reg*, specifically him, not just because he is her literal protection, but also because she's attached to his sense of care and affection. So much that when she hallucinates about almost everyone she loves telling her to come back, because Reg isn't there, she snaps back to reality. I feel that the answer to how much Riko can stare and descend into the abyss is completely dependable on how her relationship with Reg , as much as his own origins, will unfold.

8:08 I dissagree, even the anime makes a point how Riko is fully aware of any danger including death that comes from going down the Abyss. Nanachi herself mentions that Riko ordered Reg to cut her arm in a way to would allow her to go down the abyss further down the line, Riko probably knows of all the possible ways she can die (since she is a like a encyclopedia of the abyss) and she still pushes on fearless or it's the curse of the abyss that makes her go down in spite of the danger of death she behaves childlishly but I feel like she knows when she can allow herself to do that or she feels safe enough around Reg and Nanachi to do that, when shit hits the fan she does cramble down but manages to comeback (she did cry in the movie for like few minutes, did badass shit and went back to crying and eating XD). Riko is the most optimistic bastard under cursed sun of the abyss, in the face of worst she will find a way to be optimistic (ok mostly or at least level heade like when it came to losing her arm), and tbh the movie shows, Riko keeps her optimistic attitude for a long ass time until she learns the truth about (don't wanna spoil shit :P) then she just collapses in tears but gets back up when her comrades depend on her, she will push on trough physical and mental pain being fully aware of it, with a cheerful smile (with few tears).

(SPOILER AREA FOR everything I guess) I still would love you to explore Bondrewed, he is somehow a horrible monster that at the end of the movie manages to fool me that he is human with just he is tired, old but human eye peeikng out of his helmet I'm not really sure if he was a monster all along or he became like that after entering the abyss but along the way he lost himself, his humanity but he tries to hold on to it by remembering all the names of the children he betrayed and used for his selfish desires, he acts like he's facing away from the truth of his own reality for most of the movie and anime we hear him described as a monster, then we see him as he truly is...a monster....but the end of the movie just shows him as a human, it probably isn't his body, but it might have been the most human one he had at hand, and he chose to look at them trough human eyes and say his goodbyes.

Among the many pieces of media I have watched/read I cannot remember feeling so amazed by any one scene as I was in the first episode of Made in Abyss. When Riko finds Reg and she begins to carry him back to town as the INCREDIBLE music starts (I mean come on Kevin P., how can a dude make such incredibly inspired tracks one after another for the whole show, it's just unfair to other anime) and the BEAUTIFUL imagery of the abyss' expanse with Orth teetering around it's precipice, I was drawn right into my television with wonder in my eyes and my jaw dragging across the floor. After finishing the whole show in a single sitting I had to know more, so I started, caught up, and was amazed by the manga the next night. I'm excited to finally watch the movie I bought tickets for earlier this year and will gladly be doing so through your link, Hiding! Just finished made in abyss like 30 min ago so great timing. Made in abyss is a story of searching for a meaning in life, for Riko she has that desire to reach the bottom of the abyss being by her own will on finding her mother or because it's her own nature because she is from the abyss so there for she must return. For Reg is to find himself, he lost his memory and all evidence shows that he comes from the bottom of the abyss so he must go down to learn what he really is and for Nanachi, he already fond he's meaning but lost it so for now is at lost (this only based of the last episode of s1). They all have different reasons to go down but at the same time going down is the thing they have in common and this makes them grow bonds with each other, Riko found and helped Reg so Reg is greatful to her and helps her out but the things Reg does to help it's not some sort of pay off for being helped it's because he cares about her, after spending time with her he knows how much RIko wants to go down and he also knows that Riko is imature and that she will rush into things head on so people will always tell him to keep an eye on her and help her out, he always tries to think for the most reasonable way to do thinks but this can also betray him because he will not always take charge of things and this may cost his and Riko's life, he has this constant presure on him that he needs to protect Riko, he needs to help her out to reach the bottom so that she can meet her mother and that he finds out what he really is. But not always Reg can save her and when in a situation where riko is dying and he has to act quickly he can't because he's always looking for the most logical option and he is in psychological pain because he's seeing Riko suffering physically. Watching him go through this makes Nanachi help Reg out, Nanachi was looking for his treasure, for someone or something he could dedicate his life to and he found that in mitty but and then the curse turned Mitty into a state of constant suffering and for more he tried he couldn't do anything to put an end to it, he was suffering by watching Mitty suffer just like Reg was by watching Riko suffer, Reg's treasure was suffering like Nanachi's was. But in the end Nanachi and Reg were able to help each other, Nanachi cured Riko and Reg was able to maintain his treasure, something that Nanachi didn't maintain, Reg stopped Mitty's suffering but the cost was her life, even if he knew Mitty was suffering, even if Nanachi was suffering to watch her be in that stay putting an end to it all was still painful to not only Nanachi but also to Reg, becuase Reg knew that by taking out Mitty it was the same thing as someone taking out Riko that's why he asked for nanachi not to take his life once he had lost Mitty. In the end Reg cried, Nanachi cried and I cried. Then Riko woke up and when nanachi started to observe a bit more of Reg's relationship with her he fully realized that he and mitty were similar to them and now that he has nothing to hold on to, now that he has to search for a new meaning he decides to stick around Reg and Riko so that he can help them out so that they don't end up like him without a meaning in life. This might not be super related to the video but it's my general thoughs after watching the show.

@@voice-less calling bonedrewd's actions "heroic" is a maaaaassive stretch. Is he trying to understand the abyss? Yes. Is the abyss _capable_ of being comprehended, and is there _any_ point to actually delving into it, or attempting to understand it? Not necessarily. Bonedrewd, like all the white whistles, is driven by pure hubris, and the 'greater good' argument that bonedrewd could, maybe, attempt to use to defend his actions, completely falls apart when it's entirely possible (and actually very likely) that there is and was no point to any of this, period. Also, bonedrewd quite frankly hasn't done or discovered that much. He's basically like a nazi doctor "attempting" to understand how genetics works by cutting people apart in auschwitz. That's a justification, but is that really why he's doing it? No. He does what he does because he's a psychopath, he has an elaborate (and at best, maybe _some_ parts are half-true) self-justification for why he's doing what he's doing and why his work is important, but objectively, and not to mention ethically, this is highly questionable. Oh, and in bonedrewd's case he's also completely batshit insane, and he went insane a long, long time ago. (although due to how bonedrewd works, sometimes he's more, or less insane than at other times...) And no, bonedrewd is _not_ erwin smith. That's a nice, happy hypothesis (the idea that there might possibly be some justification for bonedrewd's actions is just one of many happy thoughts / ideas / hopes that MIA is all too happy to utterly deconstruct and ruin for you, lol). The main, critical difference here is that Erwin was never _intentionally_ throwing people's lives away. As a commander, he was put in situations where, repeatedly, that was the only thing he _could_ do (or at least that was the _effect_ of his actions), and he expressed extreme distress / remorse that this was the outcome. Erwin has a conscience (it's by far one of his most defining character traits), and if he _could_ make progress against the titans without "sacrificing" people (ie. unintentionally losing people on raids), he would. But he can't. So he curses his own actions, calls himself a murderer, and hopes - _hopes_ - that some of his actions will have made a difference. But Bonedrewd? Bonedrewd just sacrifices people _because he can_ . "Studying" the abyss is Bonedrewd's hobby, literally, and as he's effectively immortal, this is just what he does to pass the time. Even if Bonedrewd _did_ discover something useful to humanity / the world at large, he'd probably just sit on it - he has no real interest in the world outside the abyss, and the world outside of the abyss quite frankly doesn't care about what's in the abyss, just the shiny (and sometimes world-altering) treasures that _sometimes_ comes out of it.

It seems people think that Riko is pure and naive, but I don't see her that way at all - I see her as being recklessly enthralled with the deep, but also extremely well prepared and able to wisely apply newly acquired knowledge. The purity is the call of the deep and her inability to give up, I don't remember her doubting even once. She barely acknowledges Reg as a living being, but a tool to further her goals - Reg, on the other hand, is pretty pure and the one who knows nothing.

I would say I've gone through a similar journey as Riko. Nowhere near as horrid, but I spent time and effort to find a parent I never knew. Travelling to Alaska, parts of Idaho I'd never been to before, exposing myself to and intruding in the lives of dozens of people simply for my desire for an answer to a question everyone seemed to want to avoid. Who is my dad? Thousands of dollars later, after a year+ of searching and countless embarrassing moments, I found the answer. I found my dad. Again, it's not the exact same. Riko knows, loosely, the name of her mother. But to me it seems like she's going through all these trials to absolutely know who her mother is. Never underestimate the desire of a person to know where they come from.

Ever since I first watched Made in Abyss, Riko has always been my character. I've always felt more attached to her than anyone else. But I could never put my finger on why. I always knew that there was a unique reason for it, and you just put into words everything that I adore about Riko's character into words exactly and perfectly. She is by far Made in Abyss's most underrated character, and her development is so subtle by so great. It's amazing. And I absolutely love it.

My God, You did it!!! For a long time, I waited for someone to make a video on Riko. If it never happened, I knew I was probably going to do it myself at some point in the future. Because I was tired of people saying that she was a simple character. Something I really loved about Made in Abyss when I watched it was how subtle it's character development was. And how there were many things that influenced Riko's way of being, even if from the outside she looked like the typical happy-go-lucky character. Even if she isn't awfully complex as a character, there's the fact that she grew up in a place that venerates White Whistles as Heroes, the fact that her mother is one, the fact that she's still a child (so her believes are easily driven by all of this external stimulus) and the fact that she basically has a biological and kind of magical necessity to go down the Abyss (because of the circumstances of her birth). All of this makes her character, although "cliche", super believable in every possible way. And I am just super glad you made a video that explained all that so well :') I loved it. And God, I still love Made in Abyss. PD: I'd use your link but I don't live in any of the countries available there :'( I really want to see the film :'(

I think it's not a good idea to state that riko's death (her being a stilborn) is due to a "corruption of the abyss", both because this is not stated as such in the series and because the abyss itself is the source of the magical elements in the series and, thus, anything related to it falls into the realm of fantasy amd unknown (it's misleading is what I mean.. something to do with expectations) Also the movie is awesome and everyone should check it out. I haven't read the manga yet (although I intend to buy the whole series as soon as my paycheck cashes in) but I wish the producers keep progressing the story in feature films rather than serialised

I'm of the opinion that any goal worth pursuing is worth suffering for. "Where is the line? Where is the breaking point, the amount of suffering before a soul breaks?" The only way to know is to go there. It is with this mentality that I pursue neigh impossible goals, all in the name of my ideals. And I shall keep going until I get there, or I break. For me, that's the only way to live. That is, to keep going despite the setbacks, the hardships, the difficulty, and the suffering.

One thing worth noting is Riko is happy. She loves this Adventure and has the time of her live. A short but fullfilled live is what she choose and until now that choice has paid of with happines. Sure she experiences physical and emotional pain on her journy but with the help of her friends she overcomes those hardships. I want to go to much in to detail when it comes to Nanachi and Reg but both seem to enjoy there adventure aswell despite the hardships. This gives the anime a bit more of a positiv fell becuse when it comes to the question "Is it worth it?" it fells like it is alrady worth it. The adventure itself makes it worth it. Dawn of the Deep Soul fells like a display of how strong this trio really is. They overcome physical and emotional hardships with the support of each other and they come out even stronger und countinue there Adventure. I dont rule out the posebilty of the Abyss breaking there spirit but they look fare from that point. This display of strengh actully makes me quite optimistic. I think the only way to break Riko fore good would be Regs demise but since Riko can not survive without him it would be the end of the story anyways. Meybe that optimisim is naiv in itself but lets just see where the story goes. I do think they will die eventully but when they do they will have lived fullfilled lives.

Spoiler It's Lovecraftian. Bondrewd: Mi-Go infected human, minion of Nyarlathotep. Mitty/Hollows: Elder Things (Nanachi excluded? ; still hypothesizing...) Reg: Cthugha, The Burning One/The Living Flame Ozen the Unmoveable: The Monolith Orbed Piercer: Hound of Tindalos Corpse Weeper: Hunting Horror White Whistle (Objects): The Silver Key(s) to the Abyss. The Abyss: The Abyss of Yhe is the location where the Elder Gods imprisoned Ythogtha, son of Cthulhu. I have a few other loose lovecraftian theories as well but it's either too soon to tell or too loosely identified to warrant commenting on... aside from corpses found in prayer at the upper regions of the abyss (cultists, worshippers of the abyss).

unpopular opinion. bondrewd is ethically pitch black, but he's also the first person besides maybe ozen we've seen willing to do what needs to be done to survive the abyss in any serious way. Sure what he's doing is cruel and borderline absurd, but he's DEALING with the absurd and cruel.
@firstname9369

True. If someone realistically wanted to come back from below the sixth layer, then they would either need to be one like nanachi, who has received the blessing of the abyss, or someone with several cartridges.
@chris_121
@chris_121 2 жыл бұрын
@@firstname9369 exactly. You're either doing the whole blessing thing, and rolling the dice on that at the cost of another person (which seems like bondrewds ultimate end game, given the experiments) or cartridges are the thing. It's a humanitarian nightmare, but the abyss more or less demands it be done if you're going down past the first few floors. I get the whole story is a commentary on insatiable longing for the unknown and thirst for adventure, and what you're willing to give up to fulfill that...but most folks we've seen are dabbling at that, hoping for the best or a miracle on the way down. So far we've only really seen 2 groups full on accept that knowing the stakes, riko (arguably) just saying "screw it, that's the last dive I'm never coming back" and doing NOTHING to combat it, just accepting she's never coming back (I would argue she really doesn't comprehend what she's doing there and the finality, given she's all of 12)..with no idea what's on lower levels, or if the curse doesn't change there. For all she knows floor 8 is a blender.... and bondrewd saying "I'll figure out a way to do it without the sacrifice." And doing whatever it takes to circumvent the abyss's absurd logic, taking the slow approach and tackling it in a way that would make ultimately beating it possible. Sure hes a monster...but his discoveries would ultimately be more beneficial to the folks back home (if he's sharing).

I love made in abyss, hey I even have the hoodie, but, and it is indeed a BIG but, I doubt if I ever will be able to bring myself to watch this movie. It seems that through a quirk of birth I have been given a memory that whilst a bit hazy sometimes, I am 64 after all, it is a memory which has one section which is 100% accurate for one single type of memory, and that is Horror of any kind, whether that is personally experienced or one that has come from watching film/video/whatever. It makes my life hell sometimes and the less horror or misfortune I allow myself to watch or experience, the less it comes back in dreams, snippets of memories or just the feeling of terror. So although I want to watch this, I really cannot.

My interpretation of her character is that she is kind of a representation of the human want to know. she sees a massive hole in the ground and says what is at the bottom of it and she’s willing to sacrifice everything and anything to go see what is at the bottom of it. She has the will and intelligence to push forward in her curiosity and find things that man was not meant to know. Which kind of makes her the perfect protagonist for this sort of cosmic horror light story

I think that, for Made In Abyss but to a lesser degree everything, the question of "How much suffering before it's not worth it" is the wrong thing to ask but, rather, something more along the lines of "What can justify all the suffering that is life?" because it's not as though it gets less bad outside of the Abyss. It just gets less concentrated. There's always going to be sufferings, no matter how small, in life that you need to find a way to make worth it or just...Stop.
