And I feel like the species difference is parallel, too. As a child, Akira, a human, cries over a dying kitten, which is a species considered less valuable or powerful than a human. Years later, Ryō, the very devil himself (who, in this case, is also considered an angel) cries over Akira, who is a mere half-devil in comparison. Probably not important, but I do like how Ryō realizes he has experienced and is experiencing love, loss, and emotional pain the same way we see Akira experience it as a kid: by losing the life of a younger, less experienced, and less powerful being. It’s just neat to me.

Devilman crybaby is actually a remake of a 90s anime named Devilman. While the first episode is the same as 90s original, the rest of the anime was director own take on the latest trend (kill the main guy at the end and blame everything on the World). There was actually no point to this, the original Devilman was a Hit so production thought that it would be nice if can profit over it. That's why you can notice the donkey sounds in certain episode of the latest adaptation. *Stop over exaggerating things before even looking into facts, why is it becoming a trend?*

@@achintyanaithani889 even without reading the manga and only watching the netflix adaptation, that was my first thought. Reincarnation and rebirth of the world is a wildly explored theme and spiritual topic and for some reason it hits so hard for me. The fact that Satan was born into ryo without his memories but the events of the show happened anyway just screamed to me that this was a cycle. Then you apply the judio-christian ideas and themes that the show is obviously exploring to it and you can come to the conclusion that this is HELL. Lucifer in christianity is the fallen angel that god casts into hell and becomes satan; the idea that Earth IS hell has been explored before but devilman crybabys twist on it is how exactly Earth is hell - for Ryo specifically he's doomed to this cycle in which he probably finds love again and again only to realize too late what it was and what it meant to him

You know the scene where Miki dies and she says something about passing the baton on to Akira? That scene hit me hard and made me realize that Miko( miki) who died before Miki. Said that she loved her and did a baton pass hand gesture. Miki then continues to run and in her last moments before she died she was talking about passing the baton to Akira. I don’t know if this is real or has anything to do with it. But to me the baton symbolizes unconditional love. Miko ( Miki) passed that love to Miki which then got to Akira. And in the child Scene with Ryo the baton keeps on dropping. I think it’s symbolism or indication that, that unconditional love couldn’t reach him or that he couldn’t or didn’t want to accept it. It was until he lost Akira that he realized his love for him and the world “ restarted.” Maybe that Baton scene gave some clues or hints to how the whole cycle could end. Is that if Satan himself could learn to love or accept love into his heart, that’s why god put him there and is keeping him alive.

The moon represented Ryo: An outsider who can only orbit the world of humans, but never truly be a part of it. But after the final credits, we see that Ryo (the moon) is no longer alone. I see it of course as platonic because Ryo never was friends with people but Akira was always open to him. Ryo doesn’t understand the human heart, but he did trust Akira and Akira trusted him. But Ryo is blind. Just taking advantage of Akira and getting ready to throw him away. Then at the end when Akira is dead, Ryo realizes how when the silence settles it’s not as comfortable as he thought and longs for Akira, his closest friend that he betrayed for his own desires. Not gaining a response must have killed him

@Jackie-wq9cr3 жыл бұрын
@@ahlogic5960 Agreeing with the other person here, you totally can read into it however you wish because love encompasses many things, platonic and romantic included. A big old "however", Ryo was *in* love with Akira, even in the original manga made back in the '70s. Akira was the only one he trusted and felt any real attachment to. He unconsciously made Akira a Devilman so he'd survive the purging and live on with him. It was never meant to be Ryo throwing him away, quite the opposite. I strongly dislike the 70s work around of blaming Satan loving Akira due to "being a hermaphrodite" -- the same goes for how Miki got whipped from being feisty to being defenseless and fawning once Akira got some Amon in him. Whenever I think about this anime, leaving its awesome music aside, Miko and her death will always haunt me. She always was in second place for everyone, even to herself. No matter how much she tried, no matter how hard she trained, she would always be outshined and left aside. The story itself considers her a secondary character (according to the wiki), and even to the fanbase, she's sort of a secondary waifu. In her final moments, Miko stood strong, accepting her fate and facing the true monsters of her life: other people. Then it hit me: Sometimes, people are born and destined to not be the best. Sometimes, willpower alone is not enough to bend your destiny. You either accept that or run away from it, but no matter how much you run, it'll always catch up. One way or the other. That episode broke me. Damn, Devilman Crybaby is an awesome anime.

15:05 scene hit way too hard for me. It was at the moment when I realize who the real Akira was, he wasn't this huge, muscular, six foot guy who was intimating to look at and was half devil, no. He was just a boy, a boy with a big heart and compassion for other people's happiness, a boy with despite being just a boy was willing to help his friend capture devils only to be betrayed. And that really made my heart just break. Now this is either a fact or I'm insane but in the very beginning Akira opens a pack of *fried Benito* (sp?) *Flakes* and that's when Taro asks why its moving after that the shot moves towards a painting on the wall that painting being "The Last Supper" now in 15:05 we see the real Akira, Akira before this whole mess eating Fried Benito Flakes with his loved ones and that's the last thing he sees before he dies making it *his last supper*

Each and every one of them were chasing each other imo. Miko chased after Miki beacause she envied her. Miki chased after Akira because she thinks back to that moment where he stood up for he. Ultimately making Miki think he would be able to save her again(which makes her death even more painful 😭) Akira wad originally chasing after his parents but once they died he had to find something new to chase and at the end it had to be Ryo. Not only to get him to realize about love but to get him something to chase after in my eyes the baton was that. That’s why it kept getting dropped because Ryo himself didn’t know what he should be chasing after until it was already too late.

And when I came to realize that the theme of the show DOES revolve around the end times and Satan's punishment (i.e., realizing the show is in fact mostly about Ryo, and that Akira is just a supporting character to shape Ryo's identity) it really made more of an impact on me. Something about seeing how evil Ryo is and then, only when he has destroyed everything, realizing that it was a mistake --- only to be damned again --- I thought it was a good perspective of his sin and the downfall of Satan.

Devilman Crybaby was one of my favorite shows of last year, and I think your analyses of it was really beautiful! I'm kinda a sucker for shows with nihilistic themes, so I really enjoyed it despite how bleak it was. As for the ending, I took Ryo/Satan killing Akira as just tragic irony. Ryo/Satan kills the only person he ever loved, experiencing pain and loss for the first time, like what a human would feel. I never really took way that some good might come from it, but the idea that Ryo/Satan will take that experience and the memory of Akira into the next cycle of the world, and that things may turn out better for it, does paint the ending in somewhat of a happier light. Even if it's uncertain and still somewhat bleak.

There is the 1999 movie, Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade, Welcome to the NHK, and the 2004 show Monster I think is really good too! When Akira show back up to the house on fire with the side characters severed heads, limbs and torsos on spears and the rap cypher kid victory dancing with a speared dead friend got me BIG time. I had to take a 5 min break after that one 5 sec scene. That was some truly heavy shit EDIT: The ending took every anime troupe that results in the turn around for the good guys and made them all fail. From Miki saying "I can do it" to her failing, Akira entrusting the rap kid to protect her, to the devilmen giving their bodies to Akira with no prevail, ep 10 was pure tragedy and it was horrifyingly beautiful

This video reminded me of Miki's speech before her death about running. It's not about getting anywhere or being the fastest, it's about the effort. The attempt itself is worth something. What you said about the human spirit reminded me of that. To Ryo there was no point in Akira caring for the dying animal. It was doomed, and Ryo killing it would have ended its suffering, but the effort of caring for something so hopeless had value in itself. That one animal's life may have been the beginning of Ryo's new understanding.

akira has been teaching ryo 'love' since they were kids. the repeated baton passing scene between mikis, akira and ryo made me think about the significance of human connection. how each of our actions, good or bad, all add up in the end and create change for someone. in that scene, the red baton symbolizes love and shows the disconnect between akira and ryo. even though it's clear that they care for each other, akira cant just get ryo to grasp his 'heart'. ryo did not understand relationships. how humans survive because of compassion, kindness, understanding and love. but then, like what's said in this video, it wasn't all for naught because that 'love' akira strongly possesses is what finally taught satan the impact of it all and what it truly means to love and lose someone. which might just be the key to changing the future of humanity. strangely, satan's tears that fell right above akira's heart in the end, can be called what we foolish humans cling to and inevitably believe in- hope.
@boomkruncher325zzshred54 жыл бұрын
That’s an interesting thought: that the devil finally learned what it meant to care for something other than himself. In biblical lore, Satan was once Lucifer, the greatest and most powerful of God’s angels. Lucifer saw God’s creation, and assumed he could do better. Thus, Lucifer rebelled against God, and God cast Lucifer out of Heaven. In short, Lucifer never cared about God’s creation. Lucifer never understood the point of humanity, and always believed that his way was always better. His indifference led him to constantly destroy humanity, because he was twisting and warping humanity away from what they are supposed to be: a pure reflection of God himself, an expression of the Creator’s ability to create. Because Lucifer saw himself as more powerful than his creator, he always believed humanity inferior and in need of “his way”. However... God cared about Lucifer. The devil exists, because God loves ALL his creation, even the very embodiment of evil itself. So God gives Lucifer all the resets and all the chances to understand what exactly is so amazing about God’s creation, because God wants Lucifer to understand. Because God cares, and wants Lucifer to care as well. God doesn’t want to force Lucifer; love never forces the object of love to be something it isn’t. If a lover forces their beloved to be something other than who they are, then the beloved becomes something else, and is no longer the beloved. So of course God would never force Lucifer, whom God loves, to be anything other than whom Lucifer is: his most powerful angel, fallen to arrogance and pride. That makes Akira the culmination of God’s plan: for Lucifer to finally understand why God made humanity, and what was special about them. What makes God’s creation special is their capacity to love, and to allow that love to transcend all the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual trauma that the entire universe could possibly throw at them. God’s creation cares about EVERYONE, regardless of their worth or their morality. God’s creation cares about everyone, and wants everyone to progress, wants everyone to succeed in spite of all the garbage and terror and trauma life throws at them. At the end of Devilman Crybaby... the devil finally gave a shit about humanity as they are, and finally understood what it means to care about someone other than himself. He finally understood. If Devilman ever gets a sequel, I wonder just how different it would be from the original. What would Satan be like, if he genuinely cared about humanity as they are, and genuinely loved them and wanted them to succeed instead of always falling to evil at the very end? That would be a hell of a redemption... and one amazing story. Pun intended. Maybe I’ll write a story of Satan seeking redemption for his arrogance... I wonder how it would go... hmmm....
@dansenkat4 жыл бұрын
I think we won't get that story until humanity itself learns and satan is supposed to learn. We keep repeating the same patterns of hatred and violence, and so Satan in the story will continue to do so. As we, humans, embrace our inner Akira, our vulnerability, our empathy, our ability to feel for others, we will be able to move forwards. Otherwise we'll always be doomed to repeat our mistakes. And Satan will be doomed to kill Akira before realizing how much he loved him.

Indeed, in one of the raps by the “home boys” explains that though the Devils indeed are committing acts of evil, but it is not so different from the acts of evil we as humans commit everyday. You see, God loves all of his creation, (“He saw that it was good” Genesis )and allows the Devil to remain. Out of both his love for the Devil himself, but also of humanity. You see there could be no transcendent good of Love if there was not the basal desire of selfishness, and of violence, and of lust etc. God’s hand is outstretched, but he never forces Humanity or the Devil to take it, it is up to man to outstretch as well, reaching for Him. Did Satan in the end take God’s eternally stretched hand ? At the very least we see he felt remorse. Love is transcendent, you see...

Without ever seeing this show, what I've gain from it is, this is Rio's personal hell. What is winning when there is no one to celebrate with? What is celebration if one does not under those who occupy, most importantly, live in the same space with him. If God is the only one who can befriend him or defeat him, then is not surrounded by God. That being that God is all of us, we who are 'remnants' of an (the) original source? Rio lives in to tell the tale, of his personal hell. He has been here for so long, he's forgotten what it feels like to feel.

This made me realize the metaphor with the cat and Akira and Akira and Ryo that I can’t believe I didn’t notice it when I watched the show. Even though Akira and Ryo knew the cat would die, Akira still cared, hoped, and mourned for it. @Theybo25 жыл бұрын
Devilman Crybaby is an adaptation of a manga that I genuinely adore, so perhaps it was my bias making my video and explaining why i didn't like it NEAR as much as other people did. In all fairness the show had to live up to Masaaki's other works AND Devilman, which is a lot of pressure to put on a show. That said, the idea of Devilman can be boiled down to or seen as by people who only watch it once as just "people bad". In truth, yeah, people are bad especially towards the end of the world when things go crazy. Nobody expects it and as a consequence they act out. But what's mostly interesting about it is Satan, and the beginning scene. The "you're crying too" bit is especially important to understandin what Devilman Crybaby is all about, and what Akira's character and the duality it had with Ryo's meant to that theme. Akira believed to the end that all people were at least somewhat inherently good, that humanity wasn't incorrigible. Saying something like "you're crying too" was his stubborn way of asserting that there is still hope. That can be seen as one interpretation, but I think it's a bit deeper than that. I think Akira’s words had a double meaning: 1) that’s his way of justifying his crying. By claiming others are too, even if they aren’t, he can make himself believe it’s okay and not embarrassing. 2) WHAT IT MEANT FOR RYO... lot more complicated. That scene was all about how Akira had cared for and was crying for a cat that he’d known was going to die. He’d known it was going to die, yet took care of it in its final moments and cried when it died anyway. Fast forward to the end, last five minutes. Ryo tells Akira he’s going to die if he sides against him. Yet he offers an out by extending an invitation to the dark side. Akira refuses, and the fight begins. Right off from the bat pretty much we see Akira taking a lot of heavy injuries, while other devil men try to help him by sacrificing theirselves. The whole time Ryo is composed and doesn’t show any injuries, even taking out others aside from Akira in his attacks. He knows he’s going to win. And yet when it finally happens... Ryo comes to the full realization that Akira’s dead, even though he already knew it was going to happen from the start. He knew Akira would die, and yet he couldn't stop himself from crying anyway. See the similarities? Akira is the cat and Ryo is Akira finding the cat dead. Ryo cried even though he knew Akira would die, just like Akira with the cat. Also I feel like Akira had paranormal levels of empathy, Koda was fucked up for the entire show after he inadvertently snapped and consumed his boyfriend Akira cried for him just due to seeing him in a video on someone's phone in the first episode And then later, when Koda cries in the garage after watching the video of his boyfriend wishing him luck, Akira meets him not five minutes later in the locker room and tells, not asks him: "You were crying." How a person feels is something Akira knows, not thinks. Akira seems to have like, magical empathy, as he demonstrates a couple times in the show. He knows when people are sad, even when they're hiding it, or in cases where they're actually unaware of it themselves. Akira always knew Ryo had it too. Despite his behavior, Ryo still had those kinds of feelings inside him. Ryo fucked up and only realized Akira was right after killing him. Good video though, definitely interesting.
