This joke is more so mocking/satirizing the old-timey movies that were basically "Look at this disgusting freak, but he's an artistic genius so the woman is able to look past her monstrous visage!" In this sketch, it ends with it being revealed that while Peter is a great playwright, he's not some pure and perfect person that needs to be raised up by a benevolent woman. In fact, he's kind of your average cheating a-hole who has no problems attracting women. If anything, this sketch says "Hey, some people look different. It is hard to convey how offensive this sketch is to disfigured people (1% of the world's population). Disfigured people are often portrayed in the media as being evil, pathetic or unlovable. These portrayals do profound damage to a community which already contends with stigma, harassment, bullying and hate crimes. In this recent sketch, the Anomalous Man is seen as 1) isolated, unloved, with horrific self-esteem, 2) the woman who loves him is seen as heroic for doing so. 3) His appearance is relentlessly mocked 4) The fact that he is sexually active is the big joke. I know SNL can do better. SNL is a vaunted show, gracing our country with many laughs over the decades. But this sketch did not do SNL credit. We need to educate people about prejudice toward disfigured people, and the media's role in perpetuating this stigma. To learn more, please watch: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sHWcfJuOhrR4epo

@JoefromNJ1 you're missing the point. The negative trope of people with any kind of visible difference, is problematic and damaging. Young people will look at these things, and think having a visible difference = being bad/evil/ugly and so on. It's especially damaging to those with a visible difference, but also teaches those without to be afraid, distrustful, and to mock. Far too often, villains have visible differences in movies/TV. And in this case, it's not only a cheater, but making fun of the fact that someone with a visible difference (even if it is fake and not a real condition) could ever have that many people interested in them... so hopefully that makes you realise why we are being vocal about it and calling it out :)

@@WitchKing-Of-Angmar Interesting choice. Never saw her before until now, so thanks for introducing me to her. Are you in your 60s though? 😂 She's a classic sort of beauty, but I wouldn't personally call her features sexy. Back in the day though I'm sure she would have been considered that!

@@h3arty No plastic surgery, easy foundation that didn't change the face at all. That's real beauty yes. And Julie London would be recognized by people in their 80s. Remember, Adults have to be adults in the 1950s, someone who is in their 60s would barely be 5 by the end of 1959.

SNL hasn’t been funny for years so I guess now they’re trying to be edgy as a desperate attempt to win favor? Like this is middle school humor and I’m actually amazed at all these people praising the sketch, im convinced they’re bots or being paid lmaoo

How was it making fun of people with facial differences? This joke is more so mocking/satirizing the old-timey movies that were basically "Look at this disgusting freak, but he's an artistic genius so the woman is able to look past her monstrous visage!" In this sketch, it ends with it being revealed that while Peter is a great playwright, he's not some pure and perfect person that needs to be raised up by a benevolent woman. In fact, he's kind of your average cheating a-hole who has no problems attracting women. If anything, this sketch says "Hey, some people look different. Their physical differences don't make them pure, perfect, souls, nor does it make them evil, wicked abominations. They are just normal people and can be nice or dicks, just like anyone else."

I don’t know what’s more concerning, the fact this has been created or the comments on here! Disgusting 🤢 Using facial differences or disability as the focus of the joke. Being derogatory towards sexual interests or actions. Come on! This is beyond shameful.

You just miss the whole point. It's a send up of the elephant man. The joke isn't the deformity but the sameness of the man behind the deformity. Playing at being a naive innocent hiding from the world but actually being a run of the mill horn dog philanderer.

The Victorian London setting in David Lynch's 1980 The Elephant Man portrayal of Joseph (John) Merrick, has to be the basis of SNL's skit opening of The Anomalous Man. But I hadn't realized that the peculiar reclusive mutant playwright sympathetic character was played by Sarah Sherman. Great job, Sarah!

When they started setting up that slow reveal of Peter's face, that's when I immediately knew that this would be a Sarah centric sketch

This skit is a NO for me. Theres too many people in the world actually living with facial differences and/or other body deformations. These people just want to live their lives without being the butt of stares, vile comments & bullying. It’s probably why the skit is set in the 1800’s bc of how absolutely not acceptable it is in this day & age to make fun of the way a person looks. Plus, it just wasn’t funny. DO BETTER!
