Created by award winning filmmaker Simon Lucas, this beautifully filmed and powerful video follows the journey of two Steve Dashew FPB 78 yachts as they cruise the remote and challenging Lemaire Channel in Antarctica. Having been visited by only a few small motor yachts because of its isolated location, lack of fuel, extreme ice, and weather conditions, the crews are rewarded with access to utterly breathtaking scenery and intimate wildlife encounters with whales, seals, penguins and more.
This life changing adventure takes place aboard two of the smallest motor yachts ever to visit Antarctica.
Change your life aboard FPB 78 - Grey Wolf, available for charter at greywolfadventures.com
Note: Drone video was shot subject to Antarctic Drone Permit 15/2018

Where to start, I would start with the fact that motor yachting is part of the problem for nature. I was shocked to learn that the most efficient designs shown here still consume by comparison huge mounts of fuel. An efficient four cylinder car takes below 8 liters on 100KM, driving 100KM/h = 1 hour. The small FBP are more like a speed of 25KM/h, give or take and use on 100KM more like 100 liters, taking 4 hours to reach the target. Even if the single Diesel would just take 50 liters, that's still a lot for slow traveling. I cannot afford such a yacht, found all this by coincedence, but I was hoping motor yachting was already much further, much more solar, more hybrid, more aerodynamic. Now I feel disappointed. The Abramovich mega yacht has a 250.000 gallon fuel tank. Nature is beautiful and all these numbers suck.

@@-ZELTHELD- You're totally correct that nature is beautiful and I trust that your fuel burn and quantity numbers are also correct. However, you didn't include emissions information. Regarding that, I'd encourage you to look up IMO Tier III regulations regarding emissions -- or simply see the link I'm adding below. While any boat burns a great deal of fuel, the emissions per liter are extremely low and in some cases, such as motor yacht Yersin, by Piriou, they've fitted filters which serve in reducing NOx and SOx emissions by 99.8% and retain 99.8% of soot particles. This is excellent performance, and to add, it gets better because various fuels are in development which can decrease the particulates even further--I'll also include a link relating to this and various other solutions below. Considering the socioeconomic, cultural, and philanthropic productivity of the owners of these vessels, even in consideration of their emissions output, they're still hyper-vastly net positive. *Helpful links:* - IMO Tier III: _www.imo.org/en/OurWork/Environment/Pages/Nitrogen-oxides-(NOx)-%E2%80%93-Regulation-13.aspx_ - Tier III technologies: _safety4sea.com/cm-complying-with-nox-tier-iii-standards-what-you-need-to-know/_ - M.Y. i have enjoyed your videos immensely ! I do have a question unrelated to the most recent video that occupies my time > You clearly started out with the catamaran concept and later abandoned it . Why ? I realize for sailing the catamaran is less capable into the wind but as a powerboat that would not be a factor , I would guess, so why not enjoy the extras the catamaran designs offer? thanks so much
@DashewOffshore
@DashewOffshore 4 жыл бұрын
We looked at multihull configurations when we started on the first FPB design. The very high stability of multi hulls makes them uncomfortable at sea compared to our monomarans, particular in waves with any crossing angles. Heading upwind there is the issue of wing clearance and wave slap.

What country or International body governs and enforces “Antarctic Drone Permits” and is there a lot of other bureaucratic hurdles(permits or visas) involved in visiting Antarctica? I don’t suppose there’s a penguin checking passports mind you, but is there paperwork you need should a Chilean or New Zealand frigate shows up?

why is it so expensive? 7milion USD?
@DashewOffshore
@DashewOffshore 4 жыл бұрын
Hello SK: If you take a close look at the way our yachts are built you may change your question around to "why so inexpensive?" It is a question of what goes into these yachts in terms of raw materials and attention to detail that you will find hard to duplicate. In any event, it is an academic question since we have now retired.
