This is the best video I've seen on ATB! I didn't develop ATB until after I got injured overseas and later ended up becoming a full-time student to finally get around to finishing my undergrad. I got really inactive and was sitting a lot. The irony is i also owned a desk that i could stand at lol. It's crazy how a year of bad habits and sitting can change the body!

@@hellboy-pr6lc feeling a lot better. I haven’t made much progress, I don’t do the exercises every day, but I can feel the stretching is having an effect. I still have to rest a lot while walking, but at least I’m able to, and I can do the exercises more easily when I’m at the gym. I don’t think these exercises would be bad for anyone, so I recommend everyone to do it just for core strength. It’s the most important muscle group, after all.

Great explanation, especially the one about the right kind of core strengthening exercises. I ditched cushioned shoes 6 years ago in favor of Vivobarefoot (despite working for an athletic footwear company at that time), and recently added core strengthening exercises like suitcase carry and plank hold on an exercise ball. Swimming has also been beneficial. My tilt is corrected to a large extent and my back is thanking me. My QL on one side had also shortened and was spasming often - that’s also getting corrected with the tilt correction and core strengthening.

Important to note is that you can´t transition directly to barefoot shoes, especially if you walk on pavement most of the time. You need some degree of cushon for that, otherwise it will hurt your knees because of the likely high impact from non optimal barefoot gait.

Another similar but amazing exercise to bulletproof your feet (and knees) is to hold on to something and lift your ankles off the floor, then bend your knees forward as much as possible and focus on standing on all 10 front toes while holding this position. Hold as long as you can, rest, repeat 2 more times. As you improve you won't need to hold on to anything and you will gain strength with flexibility in two of the most important joints in your body

Top video for the most part, but I have had a different experience with flat shoes. I wore flat shoes all my life, but had to make a sudden change to overpronation friendly new balance after having a laminectomy. The shoes with heel support have helped provide a lot of comfort. When you wear flats and walk or stand for a considerable amount of time, the shoes transfer all the pressure to your feet which then puts pressure on your hamstring, feet, and hip muscles.

Great video. I like the info on anterior pelvic tilt. Many of the exercises I’ve learned from my PT. I have the problems that arise from the anterior pelvic tilt- back problems like DDD and bulging intervertebral discs since my 20’s. I’m a fit 53 yo female doctor. I have mod to severe ankle pronation bilaterally and flexible flat feet and hyper mobility in my joints. Not like EDS but bad enough that the resultant chronic excessive motion in my first metatarsals from years of uncorrected pronation has resulted in severe arthritis. I suspect that incorrect pronation and ligamentous laxity has resulted in my current body mechanics problems. I received nice custom orthotics and they have been a lifesaver. I’ll watch your other videos as I am curious, but barefoot walking doesn’t work for me. It would be great if I could correct my ankle pronation but I doubt it’s something I can fix. Or could have fixed when I was younger. Would appreciate your thoughts.

You can no joke develop an arch. I've been flat footed for as long as I remember, but because of foot strengthening and being Barefoot more I have actually been developing an arch. I dealt with over pronation, chronic ankle pain when trying to get back into running for the past 10 years, and trying custom orthodics for so long. It's all BS. You can actually make a difference, just make sure you take your time and do a lot of research. Check out the CEO of Xero Shoes, he has a lot of talks on this stuff that would help you if you went down that route.

This was great... my APT has gotten so bad that my knees face inwards.. ( I could be wrong but from my own googling, I think it is Tibial Torsion? Although I have spoken to people who have said because of the pelvis rotating, it turns the joint for your femur which makes your knees turn in ) they don't collapse inwards but they do face inwards which means if I squat, I need to face my feet outwards so my knees bend straight.. I also have flat feet so I know that doesn't help. Basically everything you have explained about what comes with APT.. I HAVE AHA !!! Are all these exercises okay to do in the same workout session & is running a bad idea whilst training to fix APT? I only ask because of the hip flexors & what you said about no situps because of them already being activated. I was also looking into arch building exercises since I am so flat footed. I do already have VivoBareFoot shoes which I love.. I just need to make sure I'm doing all this correctly, Any help would be great but this video made me feel so much more confident that I can fix this.. I've battled for sometime with this so I'm hoping I can fix it before I get worse & the pain gets worse, as a Type 1 Diabetic... I need to look after my body. Hopefully that all makes sense. Thank you

I love to deadlift .. but after a week or so I can barely walk as my lower back muscles are constantly contracting even for just walking or standing it is a nightmare .. my pelvis is mis aligned I’m sure of it .,, however although I love to deadlift I never ever stretch at all so I think my hip flexors and hamstrings are causing my APT thanks for this video o had no idea my problem could be explained in such a simple manor .,

muscles that are tight are weak. I would recommend strengthening the hip flexors AND stretching them. Most people never train their hip flexors and this imbalance makes them tight. That being said this is probably one of the best videos made on this subject.

Any thoughts on the bit about minimally supportive footwear for a person who uses prescription inserts due to congenital flat feet? My lower back problems began once I adopted those inserts. All the shoe changes and stretching in the world only seems to move the pain around; it never goes away. Until I can afford corrective surgery I feel pretty desperate to protect my body against all the side effects wearing the inserts has brought about. At the same time I don't want to give them up because my arch pain was so great before I got them.

After making this comment I went down an immediate minimalist shoe rabbit hole, and bought myself a pair of Xeros (don't remember the model; just the only one of the two available at the runners store which would be socially acceptable at work). Here are my findings after 5 days of wearing them to work and two weekend days of regular activity: - Neck pain I associated with age has just...left. I can swing my neck around, 'crack' it, do whatever. I am clearly carrying less tension in my upper back now. - The myriad exercises all seem to be good although I don't really know which ones are having the greatest effect. I'm treating it as a marathon-not-a-race thing, and just thinking about how strong my feet might be a year from now. - I've continued consuming all the flat foot / arch strengthening content I can find on KZbin with a skeptic's eye (because I don't want to get my hopes up about being able to save my feet without surgery). I'm cautiously optimistic that a life without inserts or surgery may be possible for me because at no point so far have I really struggled. - I'm working to make sure I try to practice supination while standing, and a reasonable amount of pronation (not over-pronation) while stepping. - My lower back, side, and hip pain has all evaporated. This happened by like, day two. I'm not kidding. This is after a year of trying to get the inserts to work with Atoms, Adidas, Osiris, Hokas, and Under Armor shoes. The reason I gave this all a try was I saw a handful of videos about minimalist shoes pointing out that raised-heel and upward-pointing-toes was not actually functional or healthy for feet. Because of the way my body just...stopped being in painful rebellion against me almost instantly after I removed the insoles and then the fashion footwear, and converted to minimalist shoes, I have to say they were on to something. YMMV but so far my life has already changed for the better and I hope that with consistent foot health exercising and adhering to these shoes that let my feet behave more naturally, I can get to a good, healthy place that spares me getting surgery. My only big concern right now is standing still for long periods of time; walking is no issue. I also ordered a set of Correct Toes inserts; I don't know if my toes are true bunions, but you can see some amount of inward-pointing from my big toes from years in typical shoes and I'm going to try and reverse that if it's possible to do so. Again, marathon-not-sprint mindset. Good luck, everybody.

@@MrTomfooligansSounds like you've already started down this path, but I wanted to share my story. I never had flat feet, but growing up I always had to have arch supports and eventually had custom orthotics in high school. Despite all of that I would regularly get what felt like collapsed arches (like my arch gave out, only it never got flat). It would always happen if I was on my feet all day. I also suffered from painful ingrown toenails due to the stupid narrow toe boxes (even though I always wore shoes 1-2 sizes too large). Over a decade ago in college I decided to try minimalist footwear, and after a rough week of very sore calves I began to notice improvements in my feet. I can't remember the last time I had that collapsed arch feeling. I can walk all day on hard surfaces, and while my feet may be tired or worn out by this, they are never injured like they were when I was in normal shoes. The next day they're rested and ready to go, like tired muscles after a workout. This year I've even started running totally barefoot, which I never could have imagined when I was a teenager. A 5k on a smooth paved trail is no big deal. I have not once had a blister, either, which I can't even say is true of any barefoot shoe I've ran in. Shoes were the cause of every problem I have ever had with my feet.

3 weeks after the '5 days' comment. Checking in. My girlfriend and I agree there appears to be an arch in even my worse foot, where before it just looked like it was constantly over-pronating (flat), even while seated and like, waving it around in front of me. It seems to naturally want to arch up, although my arch is low, and it's clear that, genetically speaking, that's just the feet I was born with. the question yet to be answered is: how much do my genetically low arches determine the fate of my feet and my comfort using them? Do I ultimately still need to get surgery? For my job, today, I had to work about 8 hours straight through. I sat down here and there for a moment to get off my feet, or squatted, and I got into my car to drive about ten times between doing the real labor. But I made it 7 hours with my Correct Toes in and my Xero OEM inserts out; I put the inserts in for that last hour, and after extended 'barefoot' stretches, those thin little inserts just feel like walking on a cloud. I love that because I never, once, since beginning this journey (even on day one) have I thought, "this is too painful or unpleasant; I want to go back to typical or even super-supportive shoes...or my prescription orthotic inserts." Never. I mean that. I *do* have to put a lot of conscious thought into what's going on with each foot, every time I am walking, though. All the way up my shins...around my ankles...the metatarsals and everything around them. It's all still very deliberate, very conscious of what muscles feel stressed or tired by trying to walk 'correctly', with my toes splayed and a good arch (read: mostly-muscular resistance to pronation). That's the biggest thing for me I think: will these 30-years-or-so-of-under-utilized muscles that make up my feet and ankles become so strong that I no longer have to be this deliberate? Or will life, even with stronger feet, always be so deliberate until I get surgery? When I'm off them for an extended period--like at the restaurant where I got dinner after work, or the theater where I took in a movie after that, I find standing up to be rather painful and stiff...but again, I was 'barefoot' almost the entire work day, and I worked 8 hours almost entirely on my feet. I wonder where my foot pain is on the spectrum of 'typical foot pain for being on your feet all the live-long day'. And anyway, I just step carefully and mentally encourage myself, and by the time I've been walking for a minute or two, that stiffness has gone and while my feet still feel the day's ache or tiredness, I can tell I haven't really done them any damage. That makes me feel strong. It's encouraging. It makes me feel like I might after getting a good, but extreme exercise at the gym, and having some expected soreness, but knowing I didn't over-do it and it's in service of not having to work that hard for those results further down the road. I'll keep updating these as long as people keep reacting to them because it's as interesting a reminder for me to check in as it might be for you to follow along. I know I should just keep a blog, but I'd really forget to. But if someone likes a previous comment about this little journey, it does ping my brain and remind me to write more about what I've learned along the way. I hope someone finds this useful someday.

I have a healthy foot like you and I am using barefoot shoes for few months (discovered this channel today) and I think they are great for walking, first days are a bit pain because brain is not used to harder feel stones under your foot. Shoes are also wider for toes. Walkinf feels more natural. I just wouldn't run in shoes like that. Yesterday I wanted to buy Converse... it was instant decision that Converse is a bad choice for me, my toes were squeezed really hard and it was super uncomfortable. I used to wear Converse years ago and I will never do it again
