I am 65 years old and I've had poor posture all of my life, started doing this exercise 3 days ago and I feel like a totally different man! Thank you so much for your excellent information doctor! I have two small variations that some people might consider, the first variation is to do this exercise while lying down and let gravity assist you as you stretch into this exercise. The second thing that has helped me is to try to take a couple of deep breaths in through my belly as I'm in the middle of the stretch , this seems to really help loosen up those muscles in my midsection region that seem to promote me being slumped over. I am so happy I found your information doctor! Thank you again!

I had poor posture too as a child slightly rounded shoulders. When I was a teen it was noted I had very slight curvature in the lower spine. But it’s never progressed worse, as I’ve never taken to sitting for long not work not vehicle not home. But at home has changed somewhat as I’m tiring with age and slowing down and now I’m looking for ways to keep moving.

@@drjonsaundersCorrect! Performing this exercise whilst standing is an ‘active’ movement whereby the muscles surrounding the spine are contracting to maintain the improved posture. Performing this on the floor is a ‘passive’ exercise which enables gravity to create the posture and is arguably not as effective as standing. In the medium to longer term the aim is to teach the muscles to hold the spine in a better posture, usually to increase or restore the natural lordosis (curvature) of the spine in the lumbar region. The standing exercise also enables the spinal ligaments to support the spine and to become less stretched and therefore maintain a good posture without excessive use of the spinal muscles as these become overused and ‘tight’ if the foundation of the spine is not correct.
