It's crazy how they made the professor in the live action an abusive controling dad when he was a good representation of positive masculinity and an intellectual character. Bro was a single father who was cooking, cleaning, working and loved his girls. Even when born with super powers and having a responsibility for saving the town he made sure to let them know "at the end of the day you're my little girls." And ofc the cw shoved all that down in a blender, and on top of that made him black💀 cuz apparently black fathers are always neglectful, aggressive, and abusive

God like it was so frustrating to see how the writers changed the ppg girls and the professor into racial stereotypes. How did they not connect that making Blossom, considered the more intelligent of the sisters, Asian. Do they not realise that making the smart one of the sisters Asian literally makes her into the smart asian stereotype. Not to mention Buttercup and the professor. They did the professor so wrong. Why make the professor, a genuinely positive male character void of toxic masculinity, into an abusive man. Making him black just adds insult to injury by making him into an abusive black dad stereotype. Oh and of course they had to make Buttercup, the most masculine and aggressive one of the sisters black 🙄. Considering the god awful script they had for the show, I'm 100% positive that the people making this show made the characters racial stereotypes on purpose.

i didn't realize they changed the races of the professor, blossom and buttercup. I 'guess' it makes since one of the lines from the leaked script is bubbles saying that ppl " 'white-washed' the girls in a cartoon" referring to the original show (which is just a wild thing to add). but yea turning the professor into a stereotypical black abusive dad, stereotypical smart asian kid and stereotypical angry black girl (which as a black girl i do not fit this stereotype at all) was a choice, a choice that was part of the list of bad choices that was this show.

What really angers me about the professor is that there was already a character in the original show with these motivations, and his name was Dick Hardly. He was literally the professor’s abusive ex-lab mate who attempted to recreate the girls for a quick buck and also attempted to MURDER THEM. Why not just use him?? He’s already a super underrated villain.

Edit bc i got pissed off and came back lol: i have no problem with race swapping, but these showrunners/producers/writers have to be more responsible with how they portray their characters of color. Its not as simple as "write a (white) character and just make them POC" as some people have claimed bc as people of color there are stereotypes placed upon us that we cant control but we are held to the perceived standard of anyway. Those stereotypes are like a shorthand for undervaluing the emotions and efforts of poc and thats not the trype of show that should be airing.

Hi Harriyanna!~ I love your videos and I agree with you on that whole aspect of what they try to do with PPG live action. With the professor, I was angry cause they wanted to do stereotype of a money-hungry angry black man when we all know that the professor wanted to be a father hence why he created the girls in the first place. I felt they didn't watch the show because in one of the episodes when the professors colleague came and wanted to profit off of the girls, he straight up said no and doesn't want his girls to be treated like a product and cut him off after that. He is a dad first and never put his greed over the girls. Even play pretend with them when it was a rainy day by being their blossom when blossom was playing the monster. It absolutely frustrated me how they change his personality and then add on that he's black to make a stereotype of that which was red flag for more. The second one is Buttercup. Buttercup is a tough tomboy who has anger issues and can be mean. What irritated me was making her the stereotype mad black woman which is also tearing down her character. Especially the factors that she love her family, she likes fighting crime, and also is working on controlling her punches cause girl was doing too much on the villains and needed to take down from 1000 to 20 at least. The whole change and betrayal of who Buttercup is were disappointing cause why only do that to these characters in the worst light by making them these horrifying stereotypes about black people. If you want diversity, then fine but use their true characteristics and personality and actually study the show instead of skimming it and try to make it like Riverdale 2.0. (Hell even Dove I remember said one time that she never watched the show before and was honored to play bubbles; who don't get me started on that whole character debacle and with mojo jojo situation too ) Overall, they should've never place the characters in this negative light as a stereotype or just to show their anti-blackness.

I'm thanking Mother Earth for the fact that this show got cancelled. If they really wanted to diversify the powerpuff girls, they could've made Blossom black, Bubbles asian and Buttercup white. Or even make them all black, although I suspect CW would just make Buttercup the dark skin one and her sister light brights. For the corollary to the angry black woman is the resistance with masculinizing and characterizing white women to be aggressive. It's also a problem because it just falls back into the tropes of white women being fragile and demure and that's just ain't it. Empowerment looks different to every woman. If they kept the professor as is white racebending him, it would be much better representation.

Blossom was the smart one (they cast an Asian), Buttercup is the tough and mean one (they cast a black girl), Blossom is the cute and sweet one (so they cast a blonde white girl). Like c'mon bro, with all the inclusiveness the CW tried to portray in their shows, I'm surprised this even got greenlit in the first place. It's weird to me how they messed this up so much given the source material. Mojojojo one of the main villains is literally a monkey that was experimented on when he was a baby; how is that not dark? I would have rather they cast either all black powepuffs or made Bubbles the black woman character. Also, there is definitely a way you could have made Bubbles into a softer adult woman without making her an influencer. I think if any of the powerpuffs were influencers, it would have been Blossum. Last thing, there's ways you can create conflict between a parent and their growing children other than making the dad blatantly abusive.

Another thing that bothers me about Buttercup was that they made her a greedy bisexual stereotype as well which is also harmful to Black women cuz we’re sexualized more than anybody. Also it’s a pet peeve of mine that she’s the tomboy so she HAS to be the lesbian/bi one; I honestly feel like if Blossom or Bubbles were the tomboys they would’ve had that thrown onto them. I don’t have anything against lesbians or bisexuals it’s just another stereotype in itself to make the least feminine one that and I feel that’s the only reason why they did it; I feel like ppl don’t talk about that enough. Also the fact that they casted her to be Black on top of all of this makes it even worse. I did read something on Tumblr that mentioned how Black lesbians are perceived and they explained everything properly relating to the casting of Buttercup.

@@keketherealmvp7568 I think this is why I love that the Encanto fandom generally headcanons Isabela as a lesbian. Ik she's not Black and ik Encanto isn't about being gay, but as a femme lesbian, it makes me happy to see that people validate femme lesbians and chose a female character who is both non-white and very visibly feminine to be the lesbian one, rather than assuming a character is a lesbian only because she is masculine. In fact, Isabela was the character who helped me realize that I am a lesbian, because I relate to her so much and definitely see her as one too! First off y’all put these grown ass girls in those dresses that the ppg wore in the cartoon series the shit looked weird and was an automatic red flag. Like they could’ve made them amazing action costumes more appropriate for their age while still using the colors pink blue green. Also as for them changing professors character making him a bad guy then having a black man play that character is a no like they knew wtf they were doing. Like you said The PowerPuff Girls is a product of its time there’s no need for that series to have a live action. Off topic: I think because he has a similar character design to Samurai Jack (Genndy worked in both shows) I always headcanon that the Professor is Japanese Given Townsville is loosely based on San Francisco and other West Coast cities, and those cities have a big Japanese population. I also think Him was actually an experiment but was corrupted by too much Chemical X. And in the past did something so bad he was shunned. That's why they never mention Him's real name. Whenever he took power in some episodes, he only took over only Townsville, not the rest of the world. Also Fuzzy Lumpkins is a Sasquatch from Alabama. Not to mention in addition to the angry, aggressive Black woman stereotype, Buttercup is also the most masculine out of the three girls. Why did they have to make the Black girl the more tomboyish one? Why not the more girly Blossom and Bubbles? But instead, Blossom and Bubbles are Asian and white, while Buttercup is Black. Asian and white girls are always seen as more feminine and softer than Black girls and it's just goddamn unfair. Not to mention making the Black girl the "toughest fighter" as if to reinforce the strong Black woman stereotype. So making the only Black girl the strong, masculine, aggressive, angry, mean, rough-and-tumble PowerPuff Girl! How delightful! In all honesty, making Buttercup Black is only okay if all three of the girls are made Black(and even then people still shouldn't lean into colorism by making Buttercup the darkest-skinned one, for all the reasons I've listed above). Oh, and of course the girliest PowerPuff Girl of them all gets to be the only white one. Of course. There's also lesbophobia in the show too, of course the tomboyish ppg is made into a butch lesbian and a serial cheater, both reinforcing the idea that lesbians can't be feminine(again, this wouldn't be half as big of a problem if Blossom and Bubbles were also lesbians, but ig not) AND that lesbians(especially butch lesbians) are all hypersexual cheaters who prey on women just to break their hearts. Just ew! And on top of that, this also contributes to the Jezebel stereotype and the hypersexualization of Black women too! Just a mess! Thank God I didn't sign up for this trainwreck! 🤮

Thank goodness CW's Powerpuff was canceled before it even started! This is what 2 years of pre-production that goes nowhere gets you. At least they got a bit farther along than Superman Lives. That movie wasted 5 years of production time rewriting the script and doing screen tests for Nicolas Cage without filming a single scene. Powerpuff was more efficient in its failed production because - at least it shot a first draft of the pilot before scrapping it and rewriting it. Former fans of Hanna-Barbera and Cartoon Network already have their hands full chastising HBOmax for Velma, the last thing we need right now is for Warner Brothers Discovery to also appropriate The Powerpuff Girls into oblivion by turning it into a The Umbrella Academy rip-off.
