Lmfaooo that busted phone with Grindr on it. Anyways, it would be nice if Apple would make something neat like this again.

I had a Lombard of my own. It died late last year (2022), but it was and still is my favourite of all the computers I've owned. I upgraded my Lombard with a 400 MHz CPU daughtercard (replacing the original 333 MHz card), 512 MB of RAM, a 128 GB Compact Flash card for a hard-drive, a USB 2.0 card, new thermal paste and - the upgrade I'm most proud of - a slot-loading optical drive from an iMac G5. Some of these upgrades are now in my Pismo PowerBook G3, which has a 500 MHz CPU, 1 GB of RAM and a 120 GB mSATA SSD. I'm thrilled to finally have a working Pismo, and despite it coming only a year after the Lombard, it feels much more capable: generally snappier, double the RAM, in-built FireWire 400, AirPort and Tiger booting.

This was a fun video, thank you mate. My current M1 MBP is the only Mac I've ever owned, it's cool to see what came before

That charger has an aftermarket headphone jack. The official charger would have a shield around it like an RCA jack.

I loved my Lombard, used it for eight good years as my daily driver, and wrote my first three albums on it. Even with a student discount that thing cost an arm and a leg though. But as my friend told me: “you can watch DVDs in the woods!”

It's not brown. It was called Bronze and it was the design language of the Lombard and Pismo PowerBooks that shared the same translucent keyboard with other iBook G3 machines but clear coloured, the early PowerBook G4 also had that keyboard industrial design but in translucent carbon.

I've got a few Pismos, two if which I upgraded with G4 processors. I still think these are the most beautiful laptops Apple has designed. And yes, the keyboards have always had that translucent bronze color. Yours hasn't yellowed with age. Or if it has, it wouldn't be noticeable. It looks like someone did some repair work on your power supply. That's not how the original power jacks looked. But yes, they were just audio jacks. I love how modular and serviceable these Powerbook G3's were! I've got a ZIP drive and floppy drive that can be swapped for that CD-ROM drive. And that curvy shape was different from anything else on the market. Really nice machines.

And, let us not forget that back then a battery life for a laptop that lasted 6-8 hours was a big WOW. Most MS laptops last roughly 2 hours and you have the choice between SONY VAIO and TOSHIBA. Two large bricks that overheated most of the time and shut off, or died because of viruses. I bought mine in 2001 and still have it in perfect condition. I remember how people around with PCs were saying things and unbeliever the truth about the PowerBook G3 I have had. Like I could set the password to my voice and unlock and lock the machine by simply saying a word in MacOS 8.6, or control the browser by my voice. It was amazing honestly having it, I could download a remote and control a TV with the built-in infrared device. I could burn DVDs when the rest was not even dreaming about it having one super-drive. The sound quality was above imaginable, and today people use the PISMOs to play or make music. I was playing DIABLO II with its 8 MB ATI GPU when my PC lover friends needed a 128MB GPU and still struggling with performance.

@@frokfrdk @retrodude6215 The modular bays in the Wallstreet and PDQ models were interchangeable. They could not be used with accessories from the Lombard/Pismo generations. And Lombard/Pismo could not use Wallstreet/PDQ accessories. Kanga could use some accessories from the 3400 and 5300 lines, I think.... I could be wrong on all or part of that last bit. Haha.

@@MrCodeypoole Well, here's an update. I managed to trade the wallstreet for 2 PowerMacs that would have been sold for 50 euros otherwise (One is a blue and white g3 450 SCSI, and the other is a G4 Digital Audio), and now I found a Lombard on marketplace for 50 euros I might snatch up, because I really missed my wallstreet.

There were 5 versions of the Powerbook G3. Kanga, Wallstreet, PDQ, Lomboard(Bronze Keyboard), and Pismo. 🙂 Sadly, Kanga was the only one that was never natively supported by Mac OS X. I believe that there was a utility called XPostFacto or something like that so you were able to run Mac OS X on the Kanga. They also used that tool or something like it to get later versions of Mac OS X on the other G3s after support was dropped. 🙂

How well does the PowerPC G3 work with OpenBSD and FreeBSD? Is there any AmigaOS inspired OS that will install, similar to MorphOS?! What else will install… ArchLinuxPower? Adelie Linux?

The Powerbook Apple logo is that way because they wanted you to feel good you purchased an Apple computer every time you sat down to use it. On the Macbooks after the Powerbook line, it was reversed to advertise the brand to others for free advertising. So modern Apple machines are upside down, unless you want to be an advertising billboard for a company that doesn't actually care about you.
