葵祭の起源は『賀茂旧記』によると、その祭祀の起源は太古御祭神・賀茂別雷大神が神山に御光臨される際、神託により葵を飾り、馬を走らせ、神迎えの祭りを行ったことに始まるとされています。約1500年前、欽明天皇（在539～571）の頃に遡ります。風雨が続き、五穀が実らなかったため、勅命により当時賀茂の大神の崇敬者だった卜部伊吉若日子に占わせたところ賀茂大神の祟りであるとわかり、旧暦4月に祭礼を行い、馬には鈴をかけ、人は猪頭（ししがしら）をかぶって駆競（かけくらべ）を行いました。すると風雨がおさまり、五穀も豊かに実って国民も安泰に。この行事が葵祭のルーツとされています。819年には、律令制度で最も重要な恒例祭祀に準じて行う国家的な行事となりました。
平安中期の貴族の間では、「祭り」と言えば葵祭をさすほど有名で、「枕草子」や「源氏物語」といった文学作品にも登場しています。もともとは「賀茂祭」と呼ばれていましたが、江戸時代に、当日の内裏宸殿の御簾や牛車などに二葉葵を飾ることから葵祭と呼ばれるようになったと言われています。平安時代以降、応仁の乱後の約200年、明治4（1871）年～明治16（1883）年、昭和18（1943）年～昭和27（1952）年と、3度の中断や行列の中止を経験。しかし復活を遂げ、現代まで王朝風俗の伝統を受け継いでいます。

The origin of the Aoi Festival is according to the "Kamo Old Chronicles," which states that when the god of ancient times, Kamobetsu Rai no Omikami, visited a divine mountain, an oracle instructed the shrine to decorate the Aoi Festival with Aoi, run horses, and hold a festival to welcome the god. It is said that it started with this. It dates back to about 1,500 years ago, during the reign of Emperor Kinmei (reigned 539-571). As the wind and rain continued and the grains did not ripen, I had Urabe Iyoshi Wakahiko, who was a worshiper of the great god of Kamo at the time, read the fortune by imperial order, and it turned out that it was the curse of the great god of Kamo, so a festival was held in April of the lunar calendar, and the horse was given a fortune. Bells were rang, and people competed in horse races wearing boar heads. Then the wind and rain subsided, the crops were plentiful, and the people lived in peace. This event is said to be the origin of the Aoi Festival. In 819, it became a national event held in accordance with the most important annual ritual under the Ritsuryo system.
Among the aristocrats of the mid-Heian period, the term ``matsuri'' was so famous that the Aoi Festival was mentioned, and it even appeared in literary works such as ``The Pillow Book'' and ``The Tale of Genji.'' It was originally called the ``Kamo Festival,'' but it is said that during the Edo period, it came to be called the Aoi Festival because two-leafed aoi were displayed on the blinds of the Dairi Shinden Hall and on the ox carts on that day. Since the Heian period, the procession has been interrupted or canceled three times: approximately 200 years after the Onin War, from 1871 to 1883, and from 1943 to 1952. experience. However, it has made a comeback and continues to carry on the tradition of dynastic customs to this day.
