For anyone curious, the flower at 0:45 that doesn't wilt is the meadow buttercup. I'm not well-versed in flower symbolism, but maybe it was chosen because despite being fairly common, it is regarded as a fairly beautiful amongst those who grow buttercups. It's also fairly hardy, capable of taking harsher European winters and continental summers alike - notably, it blooms in winter, which is when most other flowers wilt. That matches the beauty Jinshi sees in Maomao - a commoner without notable looks, yet capable of establishing herself and surviving in a harsh environment that doesn't care much for her place, thus more beautiful to him than the delicate, precious flowers of the Rear Palace. The flower is also poisonous/irritating to herd animals, yet is used medicinally by Native Americans, which could tie into her job as an apothecary. This also ties in fairly well to the lyrics, where the first verse has the singer (presumably singing Maomao's POV) question what's wrong with hiding in the shadows and being a common flower (i.e. avoiding the attention of those above you) yet in the second verse, the singer (now likely embodying Jinshi) says that he will anyway water the flower, and that it should appreciate its own beauty (which is very different from the other, flashier flowers).

A good guess, but it's actually creeping wood sorrel. Note that the leaves aren't shaped like those of a buttercup, but are more clover-like. They bloom in autumn, and a notable characteristic of theirs on display here is the tendency to close their flowers and leaves when crowded by other plants; they only unfurl in direct sunlight. The metaphors you pointed out still work regardless: they're both hardy, edible, unassuming wildflowers.

It's definitely wood sorrel, but on top of that, it seems to be where she got her name! It's common name in Japanese seems to translate to "cats paw" though I could be wrong. It also plays into the story of her parents that we learn later in the season and is used in herbal medicine, supposedly as a cure for snakebites.

The music is one of The Apothecary Diaries greatest strengths. All the characters have a piece of particular music assigned to them. The music is used often to set the tone for many of the scenes. One the best uses, is the entrance of the new Pure Consort in episode 14. A haunting melody that sets the stage for the entrance of the mysterious Consort Loulan. And of course, the themes songs for the front, and rear halves, of the first season. The first half theme song (The one in this video) is fast paced and exciting. The second half theme song, is emotionally moving. A wonderfully written anime worth watching. My personal favorite of the season.

I cant help but feel like this opening is some sort of foreshadowing about Maomao's path. The transition from the freckled plain Apothecary, into the astonishingly beautiful princess dressed in a dress made out of the night sky seems to carry a lot of meaning. The transition goes as if maomao gives up her own freedom in the form of that light, as if she is giving up from the apothecary life and becoming a noble, Jinshi's true identity as the "moon prince" might be related to she being dressed as the night, so they both complement each other. Maomao marriage with Jinshi is pretty much confirmed, its too late to go back now and she knows it. but the thing that holds her back is the fact that she feels uncomfortable being a noble and all the troubles involved with it. She knows she will lose her freedom once she accepts her place as the La Clan Princess and also as Jinshi's wife. But im pretty sure, once she fully accepts her position, she will in fact be a wonderful princess and shine bright just like in the opening. cuz otherwise the opening doesnt really fit much with the first season 😂

This, ladies & gentleman is one of the best anime openings in recent years. *Holy s**** - This landed on my Spotify list immediately after the first time hearing. Not like the ones that you add for "hmmm the anime was pretty good, and the opening makes me feel things"-reasons. Just the pure music was love at first sight (or hearing if you want to). And the visuals are stunning without spoilering anything. This can hold on against the big ones like AoT OP1+2, FMAB OP1, several Naruto Shippuuden Openings, Black Clover OP3+10, Assassination Classrom OP4, and even most of Bleach OPs without any effort.

I've been reading the English translations of the light novels and oh boy some of the more private scenes between Maomao and Jinshi can be a bit spicy! Near the end of the 5th light novel Jinshi makes an overly aggressive advance towards Maomao and have his way with her. But he under estimates Maomao and her years of education from her Older Sisters at the Verdigris House and instead she turns the tables on him.

MaoMao is in fact named after woodsorrel ("cat's paw"). Ad a few other flowers in the OP are associated with some of the female characters in the series. Not sure how many, though. But I spotted at least 4.

For the Three Princesses, their flowers are a plum blossom (Meimei), magnolia (Pairin), and a chrysanthemum (Joka).
