Back many years go, when the Mackintosh was becoming popular, I picked up a GS at a used equipment store for practically nothing and brought it into my classroom to supplement the Apple IIe that I had. My SPED kids were excited with the graphics, but what thrilled me was that I could take all my Apple II files and translate them for the school office Mackintosh. It saved me a whole bunch of retyping! It was a great machine.

the general consensus is that steve wozniak's computers were good, where as everything touched by steve hack fraud jobs was an overpriced, underpowered machine. apple chose the wrong steve, and became what they are today because of it. steve wozniak was a really intelligent guy, and that's why he didn't fit in at apple. their business model became about tricking dumb consumers into buying inferior tech, they had no interest in creating top of the line computers anymore.

You realise that the floppy emu device is compatible with the IIGS and the SD card he puts in the bundle has a bunch of IIGS stuff on it as well as Mac right? All I'm saying is if you've the floppy emu you probably didn't need to muck around with getting ADTPro running.

I used to be an Apple 2 officinato... The reason the computer didn't have built-in stereo was because of a court order. Years earlier, Apple Computer was sued by Apple Music of England (the producers of the Beatles music.) One of the results of that lawsuit was that Apple at that time could not become a music company - and it was seen that with high-fidelity sound in a personal computer that was broadcast in stereo would be a violation of that agreement. It was a simple-enough work-around. You could purchase a $10 part from Radio Shack that connected to an INTERNAL stereo sound header and just plug into that instead. In practice, however, most people who really wanted good audio would purchase an Audio Animator or a Sonic Blaster, or some similar sound card from a company like Applied Engineering or similar.

You can press Apple-Control-ESC to get the Desk Accessories menu, then RAM disk, which will show you how much RAM is installed. AppleWorks is reporting 637K free after it has loaded itself into RAM. So your IIgs probably had 768K total (512K on the memory card, and 256K built-in on the ROM 01 motherboard.)

So I have a question, the IBM Ps/2 is from the same time as this... doesn't it just shrek this Apple?
@drumguy13846 жыл бұрын
The IIgs's processor was capable of running at 12MHz, which would well outperform the 8MHz 8086 in the original PS/2 as well as the 7MHz processor in the original Mac ... unfortunately, Apple underclocked the IIgs down to 2.4MHz to artificially give the speed advantage to the Mac. This resulted in both the Mac and the PS/2 being faster, but it didn't have to be that way. The Apple II/Mac internal war was the thing that stopped Apple from becoming the king of the desktop space. If they had just scrapped the Mac and un-crippled the IIgs it would have blown away anything IBM was doing. The Mac was inferior to both the PS/2 and the IIgs, but it was Jobs' baby and he couldn't bear losing, even if the result would have been better for his company.
@tetsujin_1442 жыл бұрын
@@drumguy1384 The IIgs CPU could not run at 12MHz. WDC didn't produce a 65816 rated for over 4MHz until after a redesign in 1990 These fairy tales about what the IIgs could have been are just completely detached from reality. The Apple II was a popular machine, and it had some "killer apps" in the form of Visicalc and Appleworks in the late 70s and early 80s, but it was steadily losing ground to the PC. If they had made the IIgs way better than it had been, it basically would have been another Amiga... A platform which had some success before stagnating and getting steamrolled by the wave of cheap PCs in the 90s. So making a good machine is no guarantee of success. Making a successful computer platform is as much a branding and marketing problem as it is a technical one. Apple II was a successful brand but it was nearly a decade old and firmly rooted (both in hardware and in people's perception) in 1970s technology. It wasn't well-suited to serve as a way forward. After a few failed attempts at making new platforms (Apple III, Lisa), the Mac had a pretty decent initial success, and was very forward-looking in its approach, that's why it worked as a new platform. It was a fresh start without a bunch of old technical baggage (like the IIgs's 1MHz video and I/O system). Not a more powerful machine than the PC, but a different approach, and that is what made it compelling. I really don't see how Apple could have done better, unless they'd done something in 1982 or earlier, the pre-PC days, to hold on to the market they'd more or less won via Visicalc... They tried (w/ Apple III) and of course we know how that turned out.
@drumguy13842 жыл бұрын
@@tetsujin_144 Since that post was from 4 years ago I have no idea where I got my information about the 12 MHz chip at the time, so you may well be right. That said, I based most of my opinion of the IIGS vs the Mac on this video by the 8-bit Guy, which breaks it down pretty well, I think. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZmXpZime8eAqdE

8-bit guy has a very good video on why the Apple IIGS was superior to the original Mac in every way. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZmXpZime8eAqdE . The IIGS was an Apple II in name only. It was an entirely new platform. It accomplished backward compatibility through the use of an Apple IIe SOC (the same chip was later used on an add-in card to give the Mac line backward compatibility to the Apple II.) The IIGS's processor was more efficient and capable of higher speed than the Mac (though it was deliberately underclocked to avoid competing with the newer Mac platform). It could support twice as much RAM as the Mac. It had 8 expansion slots to the Mac's zero. It had better sound processing than the Mac, networking capability ... and did I mention, it had a 4000+ COLOR DISPLAY? The Mac was black and white, not even grayscale. To top it off the IIGS was cheaper. Even when you factored in the cost of a monitor it was still $1000 cheaper than a Mac. 8-bit guy suggests, and I agree, that the Mac was possibly Apple's biggest mistake, aside from losing Woz (IMO). The internal war at Apple between the Apple II team and the Mac team was really all about Jobs' ego. The Mac was his baby. It was meant to be a low-end consumer device side project. He insisted on turning it into an ultra-expensive yet underpowered flagship that was easily outperformed by Apple's other projects. This set the stage for pretty much every aspect of Apple's business model since he returned to the company in the late 90s. Extremely over-hyped, over-priced, slick looking but lacking in basic features ... selling entirely on image. People think of the firing of Jobs as Apple's biggest mistake, but I think letting Woz walk away was bigger. The balance of the two Steves may have been the magic that made Apple work in the beginning, but if I had to choose one to have back I would take Woz over Jobs any day.
You should try installing android x86 on an old pc, it throws a lot of random problems at you so it would be great for you style.
