10:58 to answer your question ... I do have a Vision Pro and the simple answer is ... I don't really use it. Did some development on it when I first got it but found its APIs limiting... It sits in my closet now waiting for a bored weekend when I'll watch 20 minutes of AppleTV on there before ditching it and going to my 4K monitors. This thing is a novelty to a degree I did not expect. I think its weight and comfort are hands down the biggest problem for it. Every time I think "ooo I'll go do X on my AVO" I instantly think about how uncomfortable it is and just ditch the idea.

I have an educational software suite that is mostly used with iPads and computers. I prototyped a VR version during COVID, but what I found was that the users who saw the most benefits from VR learning grew out of it quickly and then moved to 2D. I love the idea of the Vision Pro, but I just don't know what to do with it yet.
@whenhen5 ай бұрын
One of the biggest issues with VR in an educational/ institutional training setting is the issue of glasses, as Jonathan touched on. It’s not reasonably affordable to have custom prescriptions inserts for every user, especially since those would need to be updated annually and would likely quickly get lost or damaged. A 2D screen, even if it potentially offers a far inferior experience for a simulated training environment vs VR, is likely going to be the preferred option for years to come.

Its difficult to really have 'that wow' factor, for instance Spatiallabs, LookingGlassFactory, Leia Inc, among others do glasses free 3D displays but, some divide exists that prevents a few of those from 'just working' similar to issues with their prices especially for companies like Tilt5's 3D thing using a wand... that accelerates beyond even being reasonable after a few more kits of glasses for multiplayer... even weirder Tilt5 could solve that multiplayer price issue 'simply' by using LookingGlassFactory's many multi-angles at once display approach... yes its still high but plateaus quicker.

Your points about Mac OS and the locked down nature of it are insightful. As a Valve Index owner I have enjoyed the freedom of modifying it how I want and using the excellent controllers. If I got a Vision Pro I would want to use it in that way. Hopefully when they inevitably make another headset they take a more wide, useful approach like Mac OS. Maybe they will go the Bigscreen Beyond route and make it the lightweight VR goggles form factor, rather than the VR/AR headset form factor they went currently.

I tried one at the store last week and had the same experience. I felt the only real use that was compelling was taking video and photos you can later watch and experience through the headset. But I also felt those photos and videos would acquire most of their impact after many years (eg: viewing a video of your child when they were smaller or a video of a deceased loved one). And at that point, I imagine the relatively low quality and friction in how to let others experience the same photos/video may be distracting or impossible to overcome.

Few notes from using the Vision Pro for a month: - Totally agree on the "nothing to do in here" part, my main use case is Mac virtual display and that can also be solved with larger external displays unless I'm traveling - I've actually gotten pretty fast with the virtual keyboard. - With the dual loop head band and some training, I'm comfortable wearing the thing for hours at a time. - Agreed on the issue with not enough space, though it's somewhat improved by setting the scaling to small. - Spatial FaceTime is pretty cool, it really feels like I'm in the same space as the other person. - I wish it had more real world applications, like AR pedestrian navigation, visual lookup, translation, etc.

I feel like what Vision Pro needs is a unique interface. Make use of the AR. Treat native applications like a mind palace: where you can walk through a library of ebooks, sort through a CD/record collection to play music. Give me something that’ll feel tactile, not like just an iPad strapped to my face. Because in that case I can just use an iPad.

I tried one at a friend’s house and it’s exactly as you say. The 3D environments are beautiful, but there’s not much more that I can do with the Vision Pro than I could do with an iPad and Laptop. The one scenario I’d see value out of it is if I was living a large shared dorm room or often in a location working like an air plane and needed a way to escape to serenity. But if I’m in those kinds of scenarios, there’s likely better solutions for $3,500

As a fellow Motorcyclist, glad you're alive after your accident, looks like a CBR500? Doesn't look like a lot of damage to the bike from the provided pictures, did you lowside in some sand/gravel and just get thrown around pretty bad? Doesn't look like a collision, or the kind of damage from highsiding and getting absolutely tossed. Anyhow, welcome back! The apple vision pro, interests me, but the pricing model just makes it way out of reach. And as a glasses wearer needing additional lens inserts is just annoying. There's enough space in both my quest 2 and quest 3 that I do not need inserts, I can just wear my glasses. And while I am sure inserts would make for a better experience in the overall, The fact that it's not mandatory because the device design allows it to be optional is a point in its favor. It does still amaze me that after all this time with VR there is still so little development on a VR workspace that actually takes advantage of what VR can really do. It's all just VR monitors, rather than being able to just have floating apps. Surprisingly I really miss Occulus Home because with enough time you could set up a pretty functional work space. And to some extent is is almost possible with Steam VR being able to pin apps to their own windows and while the desktop itself will have everything overlapping and popping in and out of the foreground while you switch between things, you can have distinct app windows and work between them fairly easily in many cases. But we are still missing a good and proper VR desktop environment and Vision Pro is only a step in the right direction. I think it's reliance on eye tracking and pinch to click where your looking interaction is both intuitive, and also absolutely limiting. There needs to be a stopgap that can bridge natural interaction with this casual simplistic interaction model. And there needs to be an application dock, or configurable HUD. We are forever away from true holographic display environments so VR/AR is the closest we are going to get in our lifetime, and that is where we can start making strides in taking the theoretical interface systems used in movies like ironman, and really bring them to life with real devices. The lack of imagination in the development is what I think is stagnating it.

Glad to see you're back and doing well. Was wondering why there's been a gap lately just thought it was KZbin being weird and hadn't wandered over to see what was going on. In someways it seems very fitting because your circumstances near the circumstances of the Apple Vision Pro very well. I have no idea what I would use it for a big virtual control interface would be fun for audio mixers but in a life setting I don't know if that would work and I don't know how well it would support multitouch. The biggest limitation that would be it's limited to iPad apps and the desktop apps for some of these a lot better and more expendable. Beyond that the virtual desktop thing but I don't know how well that would work in bed waving my arms around but it does seem like it would be a good way to work on stuff without having to sit at a desk. Which is comes back to content consumption we keep creating content consumption devices and nothing for content creation and then we keep limiting what is capable on the desktop environments. I have an updated Mac OS X from 12.7.5 and I do computer support for other folks and I'm looking at the disaster that it's turning into. Just try and find anything in settings which used to be system preferences which used to be laid out in a somewhat reasonable manner it just keeps getting rampaged in with the last update to make it iPhone like it's a mess. I bought a framework and I'm planning to Daily Linux on it, I just have to get used to a few things first and find a good bag to put it in. If only the LTT backpack had D-Ring Hooks near the bottom so I could clip on a waist strap.

I want to use the Vision Pro to edit photos in lightroom on a giant screen. Editing portrait oriented photos on a macbook screen makes them look so small. I'd love to see my pictures blown up big like they're in an art gallery while I work on them. With a macbook, it's cumbersome to cuddle up and edit on a couch so I end up locked in my room at a desk. I'd love to feel close with the people I love in the evenings while I edit. To be able to work on giant, color-accurate photos while my wall-mounted TV plays through passthrough behind them, so I can still feel connected with the people around me while working on my art. I do worry that because I can't show people what I'm seeing, I'd feel isolated. The Macbook virtual display option seems like the solution, if only I could quickly share my screen on my macbook to ask, "Hey cutie, what do you think of this photo?" or "Check out this cool thing I've been working on!"

Hope you recover well. The lack of a dedicated KZbin app is what kills the Vision Pro for me right now

It's a Safari extension that's basically an adblocker for KZbin - it only shows you the real video, none of the ads before that, and it allows PiP on iPhone, iPad and Mac.

That's why you always wear an airbag west! Got mine a couple of months ago, and I will never again ride without it ... Good thing you recovered!! :)

I love how the choice to film this portal to scenic virtual worlds was shot in scenic real life settings; it emphasizes a kind of isolation intrinsic to VR tech in the present day. So many other channels demonstrated it in a city, seeing it in nature was impactful for how much it divided people from the world-- especially of its not providing people many things to do, or people to connect to inside it's virtual world.

We like filming outside the office if we can, and White Rock is pretty close. But on set, I did get a kick of spinning the dial from the beach to Apple’s Environment. Was pretty funny.

I’m glad you’re back on the channel (didn’t want to say on the road). Naturally we missed you terribly, but here we are, enjoying some more of Jonathan and a quality video.

While I can't see a future where VR is the main method of interacting with the web and media, I don't think it's a problem for VR headsets to only be for hobbyists and the occasional profession where having three dimensions to the screen is a big benefit. Where the problem comes in, is when such a device costs $3500. As you said, it doesn't really _do_ much for the typical person. It can't really replace anything. All VR can do as a medium that a flat screen can't is be used for immersive experiences, or else fill your entire field of view with virtual screens. The former is fun, but not useful outside of very niche exceptions. The latter is useful, but not much more useful than just getting a second monitor for your desktop. I've got a VR headset, and I'm glad I do, but my Quest 2 in 2021 cost me less than a tenth of what the Vision Pro costs (and its msrp now is barely a 20th). Maybe the Vision Pro has 10x the cost of materials and R&D, but the end product sure doesn't provide 10x as much value.

Glad to have you back Jonathan, if I must say, I think the experience of the Vision Pro would be a lot more fun if it came with a glove-like accessory to give our hands a nice feedback when using it

When Apple Watch came out, the same questions were asked about what would it be usedful for, who would use it. It took a year or two before its usefulness as a sports device became apparent and Appe has since pitched it as such. I suspect the same will happen with Vision Pro, but there will also be industrial apps (architects, designers, training applications etc). Apple is patient and will see how it pans out.

Sorry to hear about the accident, but glad to hear you're recovering well! Shout out to the safety gear for doing its job 🙌 It also had the interesting unintended consequence of actually being able to look back at this device after the majority of the hype has died down. Makes for a fresh perspective!

The thing about the closed ecosystem really rings true. A lot of vr headsets kind of suck but they've kind of stuck around because people have made stuff for them. Vr chat is scuffed as hell, it's clearly not a polished experience and yet it's probably one of the vr experiences that has persisted the longest

One of the first things I said about this headset when it was announced at WWDC. “I want a spatial computing platform. Not an iPad I can wear” Vision Pro has incredible hardware but the software in no way gives me the opportunity to use it effectively
