This channel does something I’ve been requesting a few other Mac channels to do. They sit there and spend multiple videos in a row talking “rumors this,” and “next iPhone that,” when they could spend the off-season between big Apple events doing real Apple content like this iCloud how-to. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea-and it may not get numbers like other Apple-related content-but it’s far more practical and useful for a viewer. Regardless of the variation in performance of videos about tutorials/tips vs reveals/rumors, this is the RIGHT way to run a channel like this-even if the content isn’t as frequent. As for the video itself, I feel like most cloud platforms have offered free services since the beginning as a way to get people dependent on the platforms. I’m not above paying a small amount for cloud storage, especially since I don’t have to purchase the equipment to maintain my own backups. Unfortunately, Apple has gotten very strange about how they manage iCloud, and at this point I think it needs a bit more streamlining.

The default amount of space dedicated to a user's OneDrive, when talking work or school, is 1 TB. This can be changed by your tenant's global administrators, but 1 TB is the default from Microsoft. What I always tell friends/family who complain about having to pay for more iCloud storage when the 5GB gets full: "It's $1 or $3 a month (50/200GB) to make the problem go away and not have to keep worrying about it." No one likes paying subscription fees, but welcome to the modern era. You're not going to care about the $3/mo you saved when your phone breaks and years of irreplaceable family photos are gone. I could never honestly recommend someone to backup their photos and videos to a USB drive too many times people have come to be with important photos lost because of a failed USB drive. If you're photos are stored in a datacenter like with Google photos, OneDrive, or iCloud you never have to worry about your hard drives sudden failure.

I did tech support at my old uni and I’ve had to deal with dozens of people whose lives have been screwed up by storing SUPER DUPER IMPORTANT PROJECTS THAT MUST BE SUBMITTED TOMORROW in a USB that just broke. They would sit in our little office, begging us to help them, crying while holding onto the smouldering remains of their final projects. Do not use USB sticks as the only storage for anything important. USB sticks are not a back up device. Pay the subscriptions, it’s $4 for 200Gb. You’ll feel like an idiot when you inevitably lose all your stuff and $4 will seem like nothing.

The event was simple: turn on photos sync and get +30 or +40 (I don't remember exactly) GB of storage. Forever. The neat part is that the cloud-synced photos do not take the cloud storage, so basically free. So now I have 42GB of cloud storage, taken up by everything I want everywhere and the photos are just synced without bothering my mind. Nothing apple in this.

Great video! Would you like to do one on the space taken by "Documents and Data" by some apps and how to delete it? Why is Reddit using 1GB of storage on my phone? Or Amazon using 600MB?? There is zero need to keep any kind of history for this apps and there seems to be no clear way to delete it besides removing and re-installing each app.
@jarboer
@jarboer 3 жыл бұрын
It's cache data like temporary photos, videos, and other data the app downloads. To remove it some apps have a remove cache button (like Snapchat). The other way to do it without deleting the app is to go to Settings > Safari > Advanced > Website Data. Then either delete certain site data or press Remove All Website Data. Either way will require you to resign into sites and they may load slower since it has to re-download the data, instead of using the cached data (like for site icons and images). It's also important to note the Remove All Website Data will DELETE ALL OF YOUR SAFARI TABS, I learned this the hard way. So if you have tabs you'd like to keep bookmark them, to bookmark all of them hold the book icon in Safari and click Add Bookmarks for # Tabs.

@@botinhas82 Yea some apps store it differently. Apps that use the in-app safari like Reddit really benefit from that method of clearing website data but not every app does. Does Amazon have a cache button in its in-app settings? Otherwise unfortunately you’ll have to delete it manually or if you aren’t to low on storage you could ignore it as well.
