The Arbiter's war against the Flood on Alpha Halo | Halo CE's NEW ARBITER MISSION (SPV3 mod)

During the events of Halo Combat Evolved, the Covenant released the Flood on Alpha Halo, leading to Chief having to ‘contain’ it by destroying the Halo. During Halo 2, we see the Arbiter punished for allowing this to happen, and for being too preoccupied with the Flood. Well, thanks to Halo SPV3, for the first time EVER we can experience the Arbiter’s war against the Flood on Alpha Halo, but is it any good? Today, I wanna talk about and review the lore, gameplay and design of this HUGE Halo CE mod that introduces CE’s first EVER Arbiter mission!

Hey Hidden Xperia. I have a question to ask. Hopefully you'll make a vid on it. It has to do with the flood. So the Prophets speech to Thel Vadaam in halo 2. Truth said " You were right to focus your intention on the flood" and in Halo CE the covenant seemed really intent on trying to seal the flood studying and cantainment facility. Almost as if they had encountered the flood before. My question is have they? Has the Covenant encountered the flood before Halo CE? I imagine they would know something about it from their extensive knowledge from the Forerunner tech and sites they've found and had since their founding. Right? Especially as it was the flood that chased the Forerunners to mass genocide on the Halo Rings. Would they not have spread their warnings and knowledge of the infection to whomever found their stuff?

Nomads cheap-n-nerdy! I can see where you’re coming from, but I have faith in 343 this time around. At first I hated Halo 4 and 5’s mechanics but I can see how they were trying to make it their own thing and I can respect their decisions. I’ve gone back and played both and the only true issue I hope they fix is the story telling. I enjoy reading the books and what else but I shouldn’t have to just to get the full game story. Such as the Didact’s true defeat. I also doubt micro transactions will be an issue! I think they’ve seen the flaws in their REQ system (at least I hope they have). So Holiday next year should be a great year for the fans! I’m sure Infinite will be up there with the other great Halo games.

I know, right? SPV3 is delightfully challenging, and the numbers are part of that. It's a mod for a 20 year old game, I think it's a fair assumption that the people picking this up are pretty decent at Halo to begin with. Most folks would expect an experience tuned more to that.

@@shadow7988 Keep in mind Hidden also described it as 'annoying'. Bungie had the original design down well, enemy count was numerous enough to halt you rampaging through the level but not overwhelming enough to completely grind you to a standstill. SPV3 made some very odd design choices which ultimately bring the mod down. Increasing enemy count two, sometimes even three fold in an area designed for a small skirmish isn't legitimate difficulty nor is it a good design choice. Some of these missions just took waaay too long to play through because of extended fights and extended areas that just felt unnecessary and empty padding. Case in point, the very first mission of the game is grossly overdone. I'm pretty sure we all appreciate having SPV3, but it doesn't mean we can't acknowledge and criticise the things it does poorly/not as well.

@@Garthorium I have to disagree.I think the large bump in enemy count is a necessary consequence of the fact that you yourself are also FAR more powerful in SPV3 than you are in the original CE. You carry twice as many grenades as the original game(Half of which are ENORMOUSLY more destructive), and the guns you have access to were not at all designed for CE and it shows in how quickly you can dispatch enemies with them; Good examples being the underbarrel grenade launcher for the assault rifle, or a battle rifle in a halo game where the pistol was already broken as fuck. And we haven't even touched upon weapons that can clear out entire rooms and outposts in a couple of left clicks, like picked up hunter weapons. I've been playing mostly on Heroic and I've found a pretty good challenge level where I can definitely get myself killed through bad luck or dumb decisions, but there hasn't been a single engagement where I didn't think I could paste everyone involved. I think if you toned down the number of enemies, combat would end WAY too quickly with SPV3's arsenal involved.

@@shadow7988 The problem is that Hidden isn't the only one that shares the same criticism. Granted, you don't have a problem but other people do. I'd have to say I tend to lean with your experiences too but I'm not dismissing the false difficulty bumps either. The lighting only contributes to poor design choices and falsely increases the difficulty. I felt the original game flowed excellently because it balanced steady progress with minor suppression. Fights felt a lot more tactical because of the pacing. SPV3 makes it feel like you're fighting an army at every corner and just grinds missions and interest to a halt where you're bottlenecked because of original map design not really being catered for increased a.i count. Bungie developed areas with intent, now you're doubling the enemy count, sometimes tripling it. It's not like the a.i are smarter, it's that it's just overwhelming odds in numbers. The fights just grow tedious and tiresome. The whole point of the first mission was to be a quick getaway from a ship being under heavy siege. Now it's stretched out to a whole hour only to coincide with the rerun in The Maw when that wasn't really the essence of it in the original. I do agree with you that Chief is ultimately more powerful but don't forget that the OP weapons are not guaranteed on every playthrough. You're not always going to use those guns every single time you go through the mission, and I'd argue that if that's the best/only way to make steady progress that in itself could be poor game design, which don't get me wrong, the original magnum certainly was. Late Night Gaming also does an interesting take on the mod which you may be interested in watching if you haven't already.

Well in the refined campaign mod for ce, it fixes the PC ports graphical issues like fog in 343 guilty spark, so the game does have fog similar to halo 2's flood missions

@ The problem with this is that the flood outbreaks act in stages, at the time of this mission in this mod we have zero idea where chief was or at what stage the outbreak was in, was the flood still being relatively coordinated because of the proto gravemind on the truth and reconciliation or was the flood back to being at stage one because the proto gravemind was destroyed by chief.

As much as I love seeing anything about the Arbiter, the Sangheili, or even the Flood (especially in something as awesome as SPV3.2), I'm hoping you'll cover their take and reimagining of Lumoria, my most absolute favorite mod in all of Halo. Breakdowns on the story, the lore, the unique level designs and weapons. Hell, maybe you could do a comparison between the old and new versions, the positives and negatives of both, what you liked most and what aspects could be improved. Actually, better yet, do a livestream walkthrough of Lumoria. Gives me a reason to both see your reaction and listen to that glorious Halo music once again.

God that moment when Usze tells Thel what chief did is so perfect! I can just imagine the seething rage in Thel as the ring begins to RIP itself apart with him on it, then the distain on his voice on the phantom at the end when they are leaving. This model has it quirks, and needs updating, but this mission was EXACTLY the kind of thing I needed as an AVID fan of sangheili and covenant lore in general. Major props to Lapidus, one of the most well written characters I've seen in a piece of fan work for the halo series, and also just one of the most upstanding brutes in the roster of names brutes.

I played this mission as well and loved how the team is able to create new experiences with Halo through SPV3! I totally agree with you on everything you mention in this video ESPECIALLY how dark things are. After talking with the team they wanted a more difficult Halo game but throwing too many enemies and making it super dark really creates artificial difficulty that gets in the way of the amazing gunplay.

What I would prefer to be the truth is that the current “Cortana” is the dominant fragment of halo 4’s Cortana that escaped into the domain, while the main fragment went dormant inside the didact’s ship, which was later discovered by the infinity and Halsey. Thank you! I thought I was the only one having issues with the amount of enemies. On the mission Keyes I got stuck inside this one corridor in the ship until I ran out of ammo and the enemies just kept coming seemingly out of nowhere. Also something I really hate are that those flood jackals literally spawn in the ceiling and then clip through to fall on top of you. You can see this happen numerous times especially on the mission The Maw.

This is almost exactly how a campaign add on to Halo Infinite should be!! Just picture exactly this, but on the new Halo ring in Halo infinite, you play as a different gold zealot elite instead of Thel. And youre searching for Master Chief while saving marines and fighting Banished. When all of a sudden the flood out break begins on the Halo infinite ring.

I absolutely agree with your opinion about there being too many enemies. The last mission of Lumoria is INSANELY difficult, just wait until you see how many enemies are there. I couldn't count.

I feel like what would be really cool too is if there was a Jiralhanae mission that comes before this one, and you get to progressively see your team turn either into flood or insane, and there must have been a lot of brutes for how many brute forms there are. I also think it's kinda weird how you don't get to work with the brutes even briefly in the already existing mod. I've always wanted to for a while since at some point in Halo Elites and Brutes have fought together before.
