Cut-Rate Commander - Episode 67 - Featuring The Archimandrite from The Brothers War

Its time to go back again to the events of The Brothers War and the tragedy that was the fall of the Ivory Towers - where The Archimandrite and the forces of the Union of the Third Path stood against Mishra's forces in one final battle.
In this build, we’ll be aiming to use The Archimandrite’s unique blend of life gain, card draw, and multi-tribe support to turn it into self-contained synergistic machine that will produce more life gain, more card advantage, and more damage output from our tribe members. Of course, that means we’ll be running a solid number of tribe member’s, mainly monks, to not only benefit from The Archimandrite’s AOE pump but also empower it even further with the life gain and built in evasion/first strike/double strike the possess to get even more value from it, additional sources of life gain to empower them even further as well as proc out monks various noncreature spell payoffs for even more value, and a decent number of ways to remove our maximum hand size and generate additional card advantage alongside our commanders built in draw to maximize The Archimandrite’s passive life gain while also giving us the resources we need to keep our gameplan going - until we’re ready to deliver the finishing strike to our opponents in the form of gigantic, evasive monks.

Nice build, but I'd add Brainstorm, Opt, and Saheeli, Sublime Artificer. Skullclamp. IOW more instant responses (cantrips, counters, and draw) to keep opponents guessing as to the size of your army.

I am very surprised Monastery Mentor was within the price range. I remember that card costing an arm and a leg, but I suppose times do indeed change. Very cool deck, especially seeing lifegain in an atypical colour combination. Definitely a deck I have not seen before.

Yeah, Monastery Mentor's reprinting in Double Masters 2022 certainly helped bring down the price a lot (he's still pricey. but at least much cheaper than he used to be). Glad to hear you enjoyed the build!

This was such a fun video, and it was a surprise to see how many decent cards in jesaki are actually monks! I might want to take a shot at building this deck. A little surprised to not see Imperial Recruiter, probably the best adviser they've ever printed, but maybe it was over budget? Orzhov Advokist, Grand Arbiter Augustin IV, and Masako the Humorless also feel like they'd be natural includes. There's also a U/W changeling two-drop that gives all your creatures ward 1 from Modern Horizons 2. The new R/B legend, Kethek, Crucible Goliath, seems like a fun build around!

I'll be honest - I did not realize that Imperial Recruiter had fallen to around $5. He still may have not made the deck due to budget reasons, but he would have at least been an upgrade mention because that free creature is very good to help us get our 3rd tribe member in play. Good suggestions as well, though Grand Arbiter Augustin IV is a bit to "Stax-y" for my liking personally. A few folks have been expressing interest in Kethek as well, so we may end up seeing him in a upcoming poll soon....

Spells that grant extra combat steps, like Waves of Aggression, would have a great home in this deck

I was thinking of including some but opted for more life gain options instead to improve consistency. Still, I can see extra combat granting sources slotting in nicely as a yet another source on noncreature spells for our payoffs to take advantage of.

Gush and Daze would both be interesting. Delusions of Grandeur would be a really fun $10 upgrade. Delusions of Mediocrity, Grandure's little brother, can still put 10 power on creatures and is only $0.25.

Gush and Daze are interesting little spells "free" spells that can help us build up our handsize by bouncing our lands back to hand and increase The Archmandrites passive life gain when it gets back to us. Delusions of Grandeur and Delusions of Mediocrity could also fit very well into this deck as "finishers" when we're able to make our monks evasive and close out games with the massive power boost they would provide us with. Good suggestions!

So many good choices for All Will Be One commanders so far. But I do like the idea of Skrelv, Defector Mite and also Urtet, Remains of Memnarch. Also the Corrupting Influence commanders are very good, though I can't choose out of the two to focus a build on.

Skrelv, Defector Mite is almost like having a Mother of Runes in the command zone, which is very interesting to say the least, Urtet, Remains of Memnarch make Myr tribal a reality, which I'm always down for, and we'll definitely be building Ixhel, Scion of Atraxa and having Vishgraz, the Doomhive in a future poll! It looks like we have a lot of good commanders in this set!

Thank you very much for this video ! I was struggling a bit with my Shu Yun's monk tribal deck, and I'm so glad to now be able to improve it thanks to this new commander and your perspective on it. I would really appreciate some advice on several cards that I think could be wincons in this deck, but maybe are too greedy to include ? (I also get that some of them are not budget, so maybe this is why you didn't mention them.) 1) Akroma's will 2) Aetherflux Reservoir 3) Beacon of Immortality 4) Fling : I imagine a turn where you can pump your board, swing at an opponent to kill him, and then use fling to finish someone else by sacrificing one of your highly pumped creatures. Seems like a cheap (in terms of money as well as mana cost) and powerful option to include ? 5) Approach of the Second Sun. Thanks for any advice or opinion !

Glad you enjoyed it! As far as providing advice for the cards you mentioned: Akroma's Will - Its a fantastic finisher to alpha strike opponents with and, in a pinch, a way to protect our board from wipes - see I can definitely see swapping out Flying Crane Technique for it. Aetherflux Reservoir - we'll be gaining a lot of life in this build, so being able to weaponize it is certainly not a bad idea - cutting Skywise Teachings for it would make for a solid upgrade. Beacon of Immortality - Its a great way to get a lot of life all at once to power up our board to enable alpha strikes, though it is pretty mana hungry - unsure what to cut for it off the top but I can certainly see it slotting into the build. Fling - Not a huge fan of fling in this build honestly. Its nice to have to finish off our opponents but it my end up as a dead card otherwise since we really don't want to sac our tribe members (since we need them to draw off our commander). Approach of the Second Sun - Its always nice to have multiple ways to close out games and this fits the bill as both a +7/+0 boost to out board and a alternate wincon that takes advantage of the draw our commander provides, so I can easily see it slotting into the build (unsure what to cut for it though). Hope that helps!

It would of course allow us to swing hard with our board, but also to oneshot out of nowhere with our commander (thanks to the 21 commander damage rule). Mondrak, Glory Dominus and Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines would both make powerful build arounds but are way out of budget for our typical builds - though I would not be opposed to tackling them if we do an increased budget build some time down the line.

HE HAS THE POWERRRR Unlike me, and my horribly fucked up notifs. Though I managed to catch this one relatively soon, which is neat. Anyways, amazing deck as always! Might build it IRL, give or take a few proxies or sacrificed kidneys. Also hey, my birdy Ishai showed up in the sidegrades! Sweet! As for future commanders... no idea, really. Might be burnout from all the content thrown at us, along with Wizards fucking up so much with The 1000$ Proxy debacle and DnD and so much more, but I can't really pick a cool commander. Maybe the new fucked up Venser? Or Geth for the jank? Maybe make a Historic Brawl deck for the jumpscare? All I really know is that the new Elesh Norn brings my piss to a boil. Day 531 of waiting for the Grazzet face reveal. Hopefully the other Grazzet regulars don't mind me phasing in and out of the comment section... on that note, maybe we could make a delightfully cringey nickname for Grazzet subscribers and/or Coffee donors?

I understand completely - WotC has been in the "news" all lot for the last few months and it has not been for positive reasons, which can result in the hobby that we love losing some of its luster. Burnout happens, so its best to step away, take a break, and not think about papa Hasbro or Wizards for a while, recover and come back when your ready.
