I trained a Veteran how to drive a giant off road 400ton haul truck and apparently I’d do just fine in the Army based on the way I taught and explained things so it would just be a case getting past the first two years until I’m settled in my trade. If I could do anything I’d want to make sure troops and others can communicate (radios, satellites and such). But I do know being yelled at would break me down, curl up and cry real fast as I was never raised to be confident or have the mindset of being motivated by being drilled at my by Drill Sergeant. Oh well, there’s something for everyone.

For me, the biggest issue was mediocre and toxic leadership. When you are a commander or a senior NCO, soldiers are counting on you to make the right decisions. No body is perfect. But when a “leader” punishes troops for giving an advice or an opinion, that’s when the issues begin and the unit starts to fall apart.

Now those last two I can relate to and the thing is I'm in the Army National Guard and those last two really hit home for me because I started to realize this as I stayed in the guard because I'm not as flexible as I thought I could be specially having to balance my civilian job which is commercial truck driving with the Army National Guard also that working under pressure part I definitely struggle with especially in the military and mostly it's because I believe there's necessary stress and then it's unnecessary stress necessary stress being having to form your duties as a soldier while Under Pressure like in a combat zone that's a given but the unnecessary pressure is when you have leadership that's just making bad decisions multiple times and they're starting to get frustrated and it's starting to project it onto you and everybody else that's unnecessary stress cuz that's stress that's not supposed to be in the job somebody else is putting overall I got about 3 years left in the National Guard and I'm probably done I keep thinking if I should do 20 years but I've been in for 9 years and I didn't invest in that Blended retirement system and I made the mistake of opting out of the traditional retirement plan so it's like I enjoy working at my truck driving company at Everett Express more than I like being in the garage so I think the answer is kind of obvious to me that I'm better off just getting out after my contract ends in 2027

Hey, I retired from Army Reserve so understand what you dealing with. A few things to consider. What other PART TIME job can you retire from? You can and should contribute to TSP, like you would at your trucking job, but this is "extra". Leadership changes (as with all jobs), so take the opportunity to become the leader you envision and "destress" the situation for the next generation. Nine years is a large investment to walk away from, and the training/education opportunities can also open doors. You gotta make your own decisions for what is best for you and your family, so look for and research ALL options. Good luck. Army Strong!

@@jbone9900 You can do both. That is beauty of the Army Reserves and National Guard. If you wanna do Active Duty, that is a commitment that you must decide. Not for everyone. I joined at 17, and did Active Duty, then Reserves... then after September 11th, constant and prolonged deployments.... Four Combat tours. That is the level of commitment you must make,. Yeah, sucks at times... it is a lifestyle and commitment, but rewarding and fulfilling also.

Chris, I like your channel. Just a good format and straight talk. I am a retired SGM (41 years of service). I spent a lot of time during those 41 years as a drill sergeant, and can definitely state that the military isn't for everyone. A few things that could derail an Army career that weren't mentioned: 1) Being closed minded (being unaccepting of new ideas, different life styles). 2) Prejudice and discrimination ( you instantly get over a million brothers and sisters whom you have to depend on and who depend on you). 3) Severe financial inability . Military pays well (relatively so), but if you are really bad with money, the tools and services the military has may be inadequate. Seen many people blow promising careers with gambling problems, poor over your purchases (brand new truck/car right out of training with sky high payments/ interest). Army has tools to help, but too many Soldiers rapidly outpace them. Best advice I can offer is to be honest with yourself, do your research, and have good motives. The Army was a great move for me... a poor kid Brooklyn was able to get skills/education, travel the world, and retire with pension. Stay Army Strong!

Forget everything you thought the Army was going to be. It's probably not what you think. The Army owns you for the period of your enlistment. That's 24/7 baby. My first year after graduating basic and AIT I spent 9 months of the 12 month period in the field. Forget working 9 to 5. Nope not happening in the Army. Try down range for weeks at a time. Whatever you do, you do not want to be a support type MOS in an Armor/Artillery or Infantry Battalion. My first assignment was 6th Bn. 32nd Armor, Ft. Carson, Co. When each company went downrange we were already there to support them. Tank Gunnery lasted for months, because each company went individually back to back, so when A Co. finished, B Co, was moving out, the C Co, then CSC Co and finally HQ and D Co. I was Transportation 64C and we hauled all the ammo to the ranges, POL, gotta keep those M60A1's and 2's fueled up all the time. But we'd haul 105 main tank rounds, 7.62 and 50 cal for weeks. Getting it loaded at the ammo point was easy, they used forklifts, but when we got to the ranges, we manually unloaded and stacked the ammo. During ARTEPS and FTX's, we were used as aggressors. It never ended. Spent 2 1/2 years doing that. Had to reenlist to get out of there.

I was at ft hood 1975 to 1978 3 years contract dont loan out money, always be on time for formations.Most single soldiers are better off than married.The rules have changed like the uniform I was 13 Bravo artillery cannoneer at 18 was fun but at 21 i was ready to get out.The best job if you just do one term is any kind of driver you get out of silly details and normally are just responsible for your vehicle that you drive just a thought thank you Chris

The criminal record part depends on the record when i join in 2020 one of the recruiters had a felony. Also the senior drill Sargent had coke chrage last example one my battle buddies had a driving under influence, operating a vehicle with out a license and minor in possession of alcohol and right now with the numbers being low even with a record i would still give recruiter a call worse thing they can do is tell you no.

I went in for the GI Bill. Apparently I scored in the 98th percentile on the entrance exams and they had me meet with a congressman with an offer to go to West Point. I just wanted the GI Bill so I declined. They then wanted me to go nuclear subs or military intelligence but I went medic because it was the least enlistment obligation that required the highest entrance score. I chose Army because my dad and all of my uncles had been Army or Army Air Forces. I can't say that the Army was all that bad, especially as my boss was former Special Forces who was back in the RA after being shot in the knee. He did things a bit differently than your average platoon leader. We were expected to do our jobs and when there wasn't a job to do we were told just to make ourselves scarce so some NCO wouldn't try to put us on a detail. In the field, I was my own boss, medical advisor to the CO and XO but not under their command per se. I had good rapport with them and the men though because it was boring being a medic if nobody was sick or injured so I'd look around for things that needed done and then pitch a hand. As the only unmarried medic, I had no qualms about trading places with married medics who wanted to just work regular hours. I was in the field constantly and did three, three-month TDY training deployments. Sometimes, a major would come grab me in the middle of the night because he needed a medic for something or other and I'd be gone for a week or two before anyone knew where I was. My sergeant said that the first couple of times that happened he thought I'd gone AWOL but finally figured that if I didn't show up to work sick call then I was some other place I was supposed to be. I kept getting pestered to become an officer but I politely declined. It wasn't like I was a super trooper or anything but the military at the end of the Vietnam Era, like now, was way under strength. I got to travel to lots of the US and a couple of foreign countries and took two advanced military medical courses and a bunch of other non-military educational annex training on base. I got five years of GI Bill instead of the normal four because I was the last group that was in on the old GI Bill and the government had to use up the allocated funding. I went from Army medic to civilian EMT then paramedic before I finished grad school and went into research and teaching. I can't complain about my time in the Army at all.

There were units back in the day did not give rest to the faint and weary. Those units were located in Germany and South Korea. I can remember soldiering 24/7 under tremendous pressure and stress as a sergeant at an artillery's TOC and as a PSG/PLT in South Korea, Camp Casey. I made men and women out of boys and girls. My soldiers knew that we were going to fight to the death if one of those morning alerts were the real McCoy. Oh hell no, we were not going to surrender if we were to have run out of ammo fighting. We would’ve had fixed bayonets. Hooah! I witnessed soldiers who did not want to lead others; refused to become a drill SGT or Recruiter; family issues, incompetence as an NCO; overweight; personal appearance lacking; couldn’t lead soldiers; drug and alcohol problems, and a myriad of other unprofessionalism issues when it came to soldiering. See, the 80’s army, only 13% of soldiers could retire from the army. It was not a given to retire from the army. I witnessed soldiers, NCO’s, and senior NCO’s who were kicked out before they made it to twenty. Hooah! I retired at 20, and I could have stayed in to the max years as a senior NCO. I rapid fired through the enlisted ranks all the way to E-7 with less than 11 years. I burned myself out for being a super sergeant. My MOS offered me early retirement with all benefits. I took it. My full bird was on leave when I had the HQ Co CMDR signed the paperwork for early retirement. The Colonel got back from leave and said, “I would have denied your early retirement.” So many of the army’s best personnel retired early that left the army hollow for a long time back in the 90’s.

In life if you have half a brain you never jump into anything without doing research or you will have a tough life trust me. Young people think 3 or 4 or 6 years is like a life time but trust me once you reach 50 or 60 your time in the military will be like a blink of an eye but the memories for most will be good. Today will the internet like utube you can see all aspects of military life and whats expected from you plus millions of personal experiences from veterans like me and Chris etc.I was in the military prior to cell phones and internet and i was expecting basic training to be like the Marines with non stop bullshit yelling/screaming which in the Army is much softer environment in comparison.Sure if you are a screw up you get your ass chewed but for the most part Drill Sgts are more instructors/teachers then non stop barking.I did 9 years total Regular Army and National Guard and reestablished alot of friends from my units i have not chatted with in 40 plus years including senior officers.Bottom line no regrets joining except maybe wishing i had a different job.

This was over 30 years ago. But i did have a health and welfare married on post. My idiot wife couldnt keep her mouth shut. And wanted a pissing contest with someone above me spouse. Add to this she, my ex, was filthy, people in my chain of command knew howuch I struggled with her. So they pulled a health and welfare. I was embarrassed. There was only so much i could do in a day. I was religious and thought divorce was a sin. Two years later she served me divorce papers. I ran. Different unit. 6 months later. Im pinned E-5. Three years later E-6. Everyone knew she wasy anchor. Btw shortly after we divorved i found a great lady. But, my ex has caused problems for me ever since. Anyhow. They are done. Its just extremely rare. Oh and dont think I was upset with my chain of command. Way i seen it was. They were trying to get through to her. She has remarried 6 more times over the years.

I enlisted because I needed a new step in life. I needed change. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my future. And coming from a military family, I wanted to keep that military tradition alive. My MOS is a 86Y, but that's just like a "starting" MOS I chose. I figured I'd get a skillset that can easily transfer over to the civilian side, and then if I wanted to re-up after my contract ended, I could then go do something that's more "fun". Because my only issue when enlisting was I couldn't pick an MOS. I wanted to do it all. I wanted to try everything. So I basically just made a list of my top 5 or so jobs and threw a dart at whatever was available. So..... 68Y it is 😂

The military can teach you things but it is not direct. Join the military to be a part of the military. You start over when you leave.
