There are several things that US Army soldiers are not allowed to do when they are in the Army uniform. That is all outlined in AR 670-1 but let me tell you about 5 things that a soldier can not do in uniform.

Pretty sure the reg about using electronics goes all the way back to the 1980’s at least, and the advent of the Walkman. Back then it was about safety. It’s dangerous to walk or run along the roadside with your hearing blocked.

I've heard the reason why they don't want you to put your hands in your pockets is because putting your hands in your pockets makes you look "relaxed" and military, especially soldiers are not allowed to look "relaxed" in uniform. Another thing you can't do while in uniform is have an umbrella while it's raining. I don't know how it is with other branches but I swear there was one time at Fort Sam Houston in the rain where I saw someone wearing a Navy uniform carrying and using an umbrella. In fact, while we wear our "wet weather tops" (just say rainjacket), apparently we are not allowed to put the frigging hoodie on. I and a few other soldiers a few years ago got bitched at for putting our hoodies on. Like what's the point of having a hoodie if you can't wear it when its pouring rain? And yeah you'll see plenty of soldiers (even in the field where you're stuck for weeks) in the pouring frigging rain just wear their caps and letting their caps get soaked, instead of just putting on the damned hoodie *that's right there* on their rain jackets. The Army.

2:19 of course keep in mind that just like putting hands in your pockets, being in trouble for walking and looking at a cell phone only really matters for lower enlisted. I've seen plenty of E7's and up walk and look at their cell phones in uniform and even talk on the phone while walking, and nobody would dare say anything to them because they have the fuck you rank.

There was a story that Generalisimo Francisco Franco of Spain saw a group of his soldiers standing around with their hands in their pockets, and he was so angered by their unprofessional look that he ordered the front pockets to be eliminated from the Spanish military trousers. I don't know if they were ever returned to the uniform or not.

1966 Camp Lejeune I had a Major call me out for helping my very pregnant wife. I salute him and asked if he could help me and my wife into the clinic. Embarrassed he did. BTW his wife and others look at him with disgust.. LOL

1:57 I was just at Ft Sam Houston with "the other people" and was shocked that apparently, that is true they can have their hands in their pockets if they want. They can also, and not only did I see this with my own eyes, but we as Army were warned against it, *leave their PT shirts completely untucked if they wanted to* whereas if anyone Army *accidentally* didn't have their shirts completely tucked in, it was *FIX YOUR SHIRT!!!* (lower enlisted of course, noone was going to come at a higher ranking person like that). I also saw several Air Force people in uniform walking while looking at their cell phones, and in the Fort Sam Houston Exchange, I saw quite a few Airmen, in uniform, walking around with earbuds in their ears. I'm not sure if either walking and looking at your phone or wearing earbuds is actually " legal" for them, but apparently from what I saw no one said anything to them. I won't forget the first time I was chewed out when I came back indoors from sweeping the sidewalk outside. A sergeant major had looked out the window and saw me walking while looking at my cellphone after I was done sweeping. I also got bitched at by an E5 because I reached into my pocket to get my car keys one morning to go to PT formation (something a lot of Air Force doesnt know about either)

I have been out nearly 21 years now. Even back when I was on active duty, the AF had a very slack rules of conduct. A college buddy went into the AF, and was stationed at Ft. Eustis while I was at Ft. Jackson. I went up to visit him there, and he was in senior NCO housing. It blew my mind, when he was an E-3, and living in the same billets as 3 Master Sergeants, and was also getting a subsidiary pay from the AF, for "sub-standard housing!"

In AFI 36-2903 you can have earbuds on in uniform but you must still render the proper customs and courtesies

Because like I said to someone on this page already it would be absolutely great to listen to music while doing especially the run for your PT test, especially since by the time we start the run on the ACFT we are already worn down because we've done several previous events including the "sprint drag carry" I won't be the first or the last soldier who said they wish they had have listened and gone AF instead of army. Oh well.

It's the military and especially the army/marines. We have a focus on infantry and we're too caught up on traditions, so our branches are going to suck more. The Navy is in the middle and the Air Force is going to be the least strict. Although I don't know how coast guard and space force would be (I would assume space force would be even less strict than air force.

If you wear the uniform like he said, you represent the army or w/e branch you’re in. As a representative you are expect d to carry yourself in an upright and highly disciplined manner. Get higher than specialist and you will get it. You’re not Joe on the block anymore. You’re disciplined unlike Joe, so represent. In other words you’re expected to be all in with the “stupid stuff” rules. It’s a non religious way to try and get you to adhere to moral uprightness.

We didn't have cellphones when I was in we had a pay phone next to the cq area but we did put or hands in our pockets the public affection that was more of a common sense and protest no you could not do that even in civilian clothes plus pretty much the way you carry yourself plus the hair and no beards are a good give away your military the last one we were really never not in uniform so alot of these must have been updated since I was in 83 to 86

@BircktownBubba Occasionally. Both officers and enlisted men and women wear their uniforms to events but they must follow uniform regulations. You're allowed to wear a dress uniform for many different occasions like “weddings or black-tie parties and dinners.” Here's the catch your not supposed to draw attention to yourself.

What about veterans protesting? You see that alot, and you can’t always tell they are no longer in the military because they still maintain a military grooming standard, they’re still young, and still in shape.

Veterans that are not in anymore can do what they want. They are free from the military. Those still in can protest as long as they are not in uniform. If they protest in uniform and their unit finds out about it then they can get in trouble for it.

For #1, cross your arms and put your hands in your armpits. Keeps your hands warm and keeps them out of your pockets. For #2 I wonder if wearing a wireless earpiece like an airpod would be against the rules. When I was in airborne school, I was caught walking and talking on my phone in civilian clothes but was still talked to about it. I think it also depends on how good of a solider you are overall. If you’re generally a good solider and you slip up once in a while, the leadership might let it slide.

@@rubenrodriguez3252 I remember at Fort Sam Houston seeing a soldier put his hand in his pocket and a drill sergeant saw him and went "oh we're Air Force now, huh?" while putting his own hands in his pockets to mock him. A few months ago I saw an E8 at JBLM jump on several lower enlisted soldiers cases because they hooked their thumbs on their pockets.

I'm asking because I saw several Airmen in uniform at Ft Sam doing so with noone saying anything to them, but I don't know if it's actually "legal" for air force or not. I also saw a few Airmen in the Exchange store, in UNIFORM, walking and wearing earbuds. Something that would definitely get Army in trouble. I do know it's definitely"legal" for Air Force to wear their PT shirts completely untucked if they want to. Something that would get soldiers BITCHED at even if a piece of their shirt was accidentally not tucked all the way. I not only worked with Air Force who left their shirts completely untucked but even before that, I and other soldiers I trained with were given STERN WARNINGS not to act like Air Force and were told ahead of time the things that Air Force were allowed to do that we BETTER NOT think about doing (like initial entry Air Force walk to the DFAC BY THEMSELVES whereas Army initial entry trainees HAD to WAIT in formation for drill sergeants and be marched as a formation to the DFAC).

@golfery5119 so we're not allowed to walk and talk on the cell phones in the AFI as well but people do it anyway, really depends on who wants to call you out on it. We're not allowed to wear both ear buds on the phone just 1 but yeah 1 ear bud is fine while in ocps I'm pretty sure haven't fact checked it. And yes untucked shirts is goated except not in ocps but pt is fine
