The Arnold Newman Lecture: Photography and James Webb Space Telescope

How have the James Webb Space Telescope photographs changed our perception of the universe? And how can the history of photography help us better understand these pictures? On May 25, 2023, Knicole Colón, Deputy Project Scientist For Exoplanet Science at NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, photographer Chris Gunn, and Jennifer Levasseur, Museum Curator at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum participate in a panel discussion about the James Webb Space Telescope and its pictures. They address the photographic documentation of the creation of the telescope, how the telescope’s pictures are made, and the greater context around photographs of space and the creative decisions involved in making them.
