My High School music department had one in the 70s. I used to get stoned in the woods out back with my friends and then spend two late class periods back to back doing "extra-curricular studies" in that synth room. My first experience of really freely creating music and improvising was not on my guitar or on our piano. It was on the Arp. I LOVED THAT THING SO MUCH that seeing this video has me all choked up.

My entire life I wanted a ARP 2600 but never could afford one. Now I have a modular setup that tops the 2600 ten fold but would still love to have a 2600 sitting in my studio just because it is a classic synth. All R2D2 sounds were done on a Arp 2600.

I've a Tonus-logo 2600 and a Solus - which is akin to a mk3 Odyssey minus a noise gen and the AR envelope. The Oddy is a rippin' duo/para-phonic fun machine with some outstanding lead, bass, spacey/wild fx and split-"voice" playability. It is a killer instrument and for starter synth I'd get one before just about any Moog as a proper analog mono. A 2600 is a whole other deal - not just an instrument it's a portable laboratory; a labyrinthine swiss-army knife of studio-synthesis AND copious (for 1970) signal processing, with a peerless UI. It can do 10x as much, really. (btw, Mr Mix doesn't know the 2600 very well in this viddy. lol)

The ARP 2600 is highly regarded, but I don't get the appeal. It only ever had a single ADSR, which severely limits the possible sounds. Many had substandard filters, noisy oscillators and reliability issues. It's really more of historical interest than anything else. If you want a fat-sounding classic from the 1970's, you're better off with a MiniMoog. If you really want a 2600, than the Arturia VST is better than the original.

I actually came across a 1979 ARP2600 with 5 patch cables and 3 manuels. It works great, just needs a little cleaning which I'm going to get done by someone who is specialize in synths. My question is, how much is a 1979 ARP2600 worth?

Hello Doctor Mix, I have a random question, is the Octave Kitten a striped down version of the Octave Cat or is it a completely different synth in is own right? I always wanted a Kitten for its wigged out psychedelic sound ring. They are expensive and rare so not happening. Now, Berry have released a Cat clone so achievable but if it doesn't have that Kitten vibe it would be dead to me! Please help Dx
