The "Art" of Communication | Jimmy Nelson | TEDxInstitutLeRosey

Recording and communicating with tribes and peoples to produce remarkable photographs of cultures before they pass away.
In 1987, after 10 years at a Jesuit boarding school in the North of England, Jimmy Nelson set off on his own to traverse the length of Tibet on foot. The journey lasted a year and upon his return his unique visual diary, featuring revealing images of a previously inaccessible Tibet, was published to wide international acclaim. In early 1994 he and his Dutch wife Ashkaine produced Literary Portraits of China, a 40 month project that took them to all the hidden corners of the newly opening People’s Republic. From 1997 onwards, Jimmy started accumulating images of remote and unique cultures photographed with a traditional 50-year-old plate camera and awards followed. International exhibitions and acclaim created the Before they Pass Away in 2010. Jimmy Nelson spoke at TEDx Amsterdam in 2013 and at TED Global in 2014.

I love when I learn something new. This was great. To walk for two weeks through a valley to have an experience and want to document it for others to see...the negative comments puzzle me. Why wouldn't Jimmy Nelson NOT want people to see his photos? that's what he made HIS personal journey to do...find and share information. It's always the ones that don't do anything with their life that want to sit and critique others.

Great photographer... when you look at a photo, people only see what is inside that image, but not the journey, the energy , the effort, the perseverance to take a shot... that looks like it was done in a studio. But there is always a story , the viewer never knows. Pisses me off as a photographer, but at the same time, it gives me something to only I can hold.

Genuine conversation is what I really want. It is when both of you become honest, have real empathy and sympathy for each other. From genuine conversations where deeper bonds are formed too. One doesn't need to be a genius, intellectual or know-it-all when having that kind of priceless conversation, all they need is to be truly honest. A communication that is always about information exchange and intellectual topics can be boring. Genuine conversation can never be boring as its a heart to heart communication. Anyone that has intact empathy and sympathy is capable of that. From what I notice, it is very rare nowadays.

I have always admired the Indigenous cultures of this planet since I was a boy. What is sad is I fear that many will perish before we can learn their eternal wisdoms and our own lost roots. Perhaps inner arrogance we will perish and they will remain in some measure and even thrive when we have vanquished ourselves under the weight of our ignorance and technological stupor.

Davi Kopenawa, spokesman of the Yanomami tribe in Brazil and known as the “Dalai Lama of the Rainforest”: I saw the photos and I didn’t like them. This man only wants to force his own ideas on the photos, to publish them in books and to show them to everyone so that people will think he’s a great photographer. Just like Chagnon, he does whatever he wants with indigenous peoples. It is not true that indigenous peoples are about to die out. We will be around for a long time, fighting for our land, living in this world and continuing to create our children.
