Over the past few years, the popularity of tattoos has exploded across the world. We set off to explore the different individual styles of tattooing, what makes them unique and the artistry it takes to execute them. Each episode we’ll tackle a different style of tattooing, meet the top artists in each style and learn all about that particular genre from the people who are at the top of their craft.

This video would be worlds better with side by side examples of what takes a design from american traditional and transitions it to neo-traditional. Show the viewer what is really being changed from line weight, shading, color, and subject matter.

I would never guess that Todd Noble would say that he's a neo traditional style tattooer. Joes tattoos certainly has a lot of extra effects and tricks going on and that's what I think of when I think neo traditional.

Classic traditional still looks better overtime and ages better. Side by side a full body suit classic style compared to neotrad is by far superior. Todd Noble does it best when it comes to doing neotrad but still has the classic bold look.

Third favorite style for me. I mainly go fo new school but neo trad is definitely a free style with hardly a right and wrong way of doing it and everyone's neo traditional will never be exactly the same. Its a very interesting style indeed

Ok maybe I'm an idiot but like 90% of the tattoos in this vid I didn't see ANY difference from traditional tattoos. Can someone please explain to me the difference? Since they seem to look exactly the same to me.

All the old stuff they were showing were traditional, but at 1:19 and 2:28 those were neo. Traditional imagery but with a mixture of both bold and thin lines and way more color/ less black. 4:45. They look more real as oppose to cartoony.

traditional is very basic, minimal detail.. so.. lets say its a spider tattoo but its just a spider.. black.. maybe one colour in it... a neo trad spider would have more to it, but retain the essence of the original.. but with more detail in it... like honestly I thought I had a 'traditional lady head' on my arm.. but after watching this it's probably what would be called neo traditional..

I like this guy's technique of just dabbing off the ink. Most all of the Ink Master people just scrub the excess ink off and it doesn't feel very good on a fresh tat, trust me.

It also depends on what the tattooer is doing. I dab when i line to make sure that i don't lose a stencil. I scrub with green soap when i use color because i want to ensure that what I'm looking at is actually in the skin and not just some stain sitting on top. I know it sucks for the client. Maybe nicely ask if they will wipe with water after they scrub with green soap.
