The Art of Kintsugi || Transformation through Brokenness & Restoration || mistermotoki
Our Kintsugi Bundle: finde-zukunft.de/kurse/narben...
Kintsugi 金継ぎ is the Japanese art of putting broken things back together. It literally means "putting together in gold." Kintsugi is an intricate repair technique in which ceramic pieces are put back together to form a new whole - the "scars" are then covered with real gold.
Behind this is the idea that all things are unique - and breakage is not the end. If this is done artfully with much love and attention, a much stronger, new work of art can be created from the broken and imperfect.
In this proces we can see the masterful skill, dedication, accuracy and patience in the following documentary by Motoki Tonn about a Kintsugi master from Tokyo.

At the Potter’s House
From the Bible. Jeremiah 18. New International Version (NIV)
This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord:
“Go down to the potter’s house, and there I will give you my message.”
So I went down to the potter’s house, and I saw him working at the wheel. But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him.
Then the word of the Lord came to me. He said, “Can I not do with you, Israel, as this potter does?” declares the Lord.
“Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, Israel
//
Job 42, 5-6 (NIV)
My ears had heard of you, but now my eyes have seen you.
Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes.

I'm going to try to replicate this technique (poorly, compared to what's in this video!) to piece together a porcelain dish my grandfather gave to my grandmother when they got engaged. It was broken a few years ago. I think its meaning to my family will only increase after the repair. Wish me luck.

Looks like a slow set epoxy and then scrub the not fully cured seems with charcoal? After that it’s hard to tell what kind of liquid he painted the joints with. Maybe a polyurethane and then sprinkle gold colored mica? Does anyone know? Am I getting any of this right? 😂
