I really appreciate your sense of humor; I just started using a jet lighter with my pipes; found the single flame lighters to be best for pipes. I agree they light a lot faster. Made me think your just as likely to burn the pipe with a soft flame because you have to leave there forever

Destroys the pipe, causes tongue bite, and burns the tobacco. Torch lighters burn at 2300 degrees. By all means it’s a free country, but there are significant differences to consider.

I'm late to the lighter conversation and new to pipe smoking. Have heard lots of people warning against using a jet flame to light the pipe. Decided to try it anyway based on Jason's videos. Tried it in a cob pipe just in case I messed it up. I figured aiming directly down into the bowl (not across it at all), would reduce the chances of scorching the bowl rim. One issue I have had with matches and 'soft' flame lighters, is that no longer how carefully I try to move the flame around the whole bowl, I always seem to end up with one small channel burning down into the bowl and a lot of unburned tobacco all around it. So I figured, maybe the jet will provide better control as I try to hit every spot evenly. It did. I was amazed at how far away from the bowl I could hold the jet and still light the tobacco. Even at the lowest jet flame I could see it lighting the tobacco from almost 3-4 inches above the bowl. I also learned that my aim sucks and not to hold the bowl as I used the torch lighter aimed down at the bowl and moving it around - ouch. I will probably stick with matches when not windy and my pipe insert Zippo when matches won't work well - but not against using the jet now and then either.

First rule is never use jet lighter on pipe tobbaco. in old european smoking culture slow soft fire must kiss tabacco.and made amber ..if you burn it with to hot fire , bad burn taste stay in mouth...but is your personal preference to burn tobacco with hot jet fire ..if you like it light it it's all ok.. With cheap pipes is no expensive damege made with jet lighter .. if you use premium pipes i belive you will use I Corona lighter instead .. i love it also becuse is really good pipe lighter and it work every time.

Jet lighters don't damage the pipe. Every pipe smoker, using any type of fire source, will have his pipe bowls somewhat burned on the top. Jet lighters are actually way more precise that you can actually aim at the tobacco. Regarding the effects on the tobacco itself: since jet lighters are so pin point precise, you can distance them for a light toasting at first and then go lower for the second burn. I've tried both lighters and there's no difference regarding damages on the pipe.

I'm enjoying your videos right now I've watched a few. I commented about using the torch on another one of your videos, but I really like it! Bravo to you for having the cojones to say it out in the open:) it does seem to be taboo to light with a torch. I also love the fact that in 20 or 30 years you'll be ready to buy a new pipe anyways

Do what works best for you, good advice in order to enjoy your pipe. I switched from a butane to a Zippo with a pipe insert because windy where I live blows the butane and matches out. I smoke primarily churchwardens too because wind blows smoke into eyes at times, ouch. Bonus: makes me feel more authoritative making hand gestures to explain a point, plus they look cool.

You have to watch the video by Mr. Frank himself on the "Frank method " of packing and lighting a pipe.Old school 3 part video ( about 4 minutes each), painfully detailed but a great watch. It's too funny...but actually works well....and he uses a "burner" to light it so you'll be pleased.

Weed smoker here; Torch lighters have been the way for a long time. No reason to use a soft flame when you know you're gonna get hit by wind. With torches, you can light half of a bowl (for people who pass around their bong. I don't do this.), you can easily light the whole thing. Any argument that you'll damage the pipe is silly. I use torches on every pipe, dry, wet, cob, wood, bone, stone. You won't damage anything.

I want to see you do this with a big propane blow torch on full blast in a stiff wind with your favorite Bo Nordh :) As always this was painfully entertaining but as you point out Bing's are cheap and I must admit you have good control over that torch. I think it is important to learn the theory. If you know it, you can start to degenerate it where you find it appropriate. This is what I do. It gives a good fundament and leaves it up to you from that point. You should know WHY is not advisable to use a torch lighter... But if you are aware of why, why not try it and see if it works for you? This whole thing is a journey and it's not like a pipe is some diamond treasure. Let it age alongside you! And still... Do the maintenance! No matter the price of your pipe.

Torch lighters are optimal imo, here's the reason why: You DONT burn the pipe, IF you only "toast" the tobacco. Like a cigar. Meaning you are only using the TIP of the flame. And not too long. So it just can't get too hot! Hell I even think that other lighters char the pipe more - as they need more and longer contact with the tobacco! Also you need to suck more intensely for an initial burn, thus making the smoke too hot. There is a reason that the inventor of the Frank method uses torches - it's just logical if done carefully!

As a welder (or) of 30 years: being PRECISE and FAST 6:54 with 1300 degrees is less harmful than hovering repeatedly ( dumping BTU’s)at half that temperature ( match) at 2-5 seconds a pop. People playing it safe with BIC lighters aren’t at all.

I'll deal with the almost non-existent inconvenience of a soft flame to not damage my pipes. I appreciated you're OK with the risk, but to me, the risk/reward ratio isn't worth it. I've never had a problem lighting my pipes with a soft flame in my 30 years of smoking. Maybe you just need more practice. :)
