It was his favourite painting. He refused to sell it, even when he really needed the money. But this beautiful masterpiece stayed in his personal collection.
It shows us an idealised painter in his studio and in this video I explain all about all the wonderful details in it.

Saw it for the first time in Vienna some weeks ago. Probably my favorite Vermeer. A real masterpiece.

Hope you post the video of linear perspective next, great video. Love this and reminds me of what I studied in art classes some years ago. Very informative!

Carel...I so enjoy the fact that your command of pronunciations of people's names, and Place Names is second-to-none...particularly the extremely complex pronunciations of Dutch-European names. I have heard several prominent Art Historians make a complete hash of those names...all the more perplexing because they are so often the "Go-To" Authorities on the subject. Thank you so much, for your attention to these things.

Thanks! I do try. Of course for Dutch names, it helps that I am Dutch. But for all other languages, I just hope I don't mess them up too much.

Wooowwww!!!! Wonderful Carel!!! Visiting The Kunsthistorisches Museum many many years ago was a truly great revelation and I very much wish to return to the great museums of Vienna! Discovering Vermeer however truly was one of the greatest moments of my life , way back in the 80s and I remember as clear as day walking into that room in the Rijksmuseum where their Vermeers used to be and just gasping out loud… I remember repeating over and over "the light, the light!!!" I was mesmerized !!! Thank you so much Carel for this outstanding talk!! ❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️

I'm just loving your videos - binge watching on Vermeer whose work I adore. I am so enjoying all the insights into the making of the pictures, the social history and all the background information. I have recently been looking into the camera lucida which is probably why I'm getting a lot of great art videos coming up! New subscriber to your channel, and absolutely delighted to be one! I really enjoy your style and am learning so much from you - you are a great teacher with your quiet enthusiasm and extensive knowledge of the subject. Your channel is a great find!

Welcome aboard! Glad you liked it. Yes, if you have the chance to visit, the Mauritshuis is excellent. Not too big but filled with the absolute best Dutch art of the 17th century has to offer.

I wish I had found this video before going to Vienna last year to see the city (which is lovely) and this awesome painting but it's always good to discover new things about something you love so thanks! the eagles on the chandelier are actually quite bizarre, almost as if the painting was destined to be in Vienna. This is maybe my favourite Vermeer, a thing that might change after my visit to the Amsterdam exhibition this week .... thanks again for the video

This painting was in the possession of Mr,Goebels during W.O.2 so it’s a miracle that it survived. (Boy painting a woman )

Carel, is there an explanation as to why the bottom of the left "leg" of the easel is missing from the painting. Using a straight line from the top left of the wood to the floor, the lower part of the wood where it meets the floor would have appeared just slightly to the left of the leg of the stool the artist is sitting on. It would not have completely been obscured by the stool.

You may well be right. I had never noticed that. I guess he took a bit of a shortcut there. But I doubt that there is a special significance to it
