It's fun to watch this and think of Chef Francotelli from Victoria creating this dish! And that is certainly a beautiful piece of meat! Definitely still the same in comparative cost. It must smell delicious roasting on the spit. Can you imagine those kitchens while everything was going at full force? It must have smelled wonderful--how did they not all want to sneak a taste??

Thanks to the food adulteration that was common during the Victorian era, the flour contained plaster, sawdust, floor sweepings, and (as a preservative) a trace of arsenic.
@Kimbermoi
@Kimbermoi 3 жыл бұрын
Bread will only mold if there's enough moisture present. Think of drying bread for croutons or stuffing. And at that level of aristocracy, I doubt the flour would have been cut with any additives, including arsenic, if purchased from reputable miller. Which I'm sure a Great House such as Perhyn could afford to do.

While queen Victoria was busy stuffing her mouth, her people were starving to death. And if they weren’t starving to death they were working in one of the 700 work houses! let’s see what were the age of the children 8, 9 years old working in the Mills : so while she is eating like a queen there’s people out there is that the only meal they have is porridge! I do enjoy watching this but still….

16:30 - I think he's maybe thinking of barbecue as in just "grilling out" and is forgetting/not aware that genuine "barbecue" uses just as if not more sophisticated techniques and quality ingredients. -- I don't know how it is/what they know about it in the UK but even in the U.S. when mentioning "BBQ" you've got to be VERY specific about where you are on a large spectrum that goes from hot dogs and hamburgers in the backyard on a charcoal webber through slow-cookers/marinades/smokers to buried coal pig roasts, actual "pit" BBQs, and thenow-centuries-long regional refinement of many different styles (...and some of the most broad and formative BBQ practices come from colonial slaves with French and English owners and there are enough similarities/shared influences it's not unreasonable to argue that barbecue is EXACTLY what they are doing in this episode).

The perfect ancient period when royalty were the subjects of the people - not vice versa. Whack a king if he didn't provide for the common good of the people - food, health, supplies, .... Perfect proof when Vicky was stuffing her face (and gaining pounds) - when the 1850s-1910s commoners in the cities were suffering, starving, filled with disease and dysentery, crapping in the streets, and packed like rats in buildings and worked to death 6 days a week for the slum landlords and bastard business tyrants ... and then someone else was employed to take out the queen's potty for cleaning. Total corruption and stoopid arrogance of a social(ist) system that remains from the state-church/church-state of today ...m as a revised and revisionsit Marixst words of modern medieval feudalism that is being perped on the planetary masses during this covi time of extreme hardship. The perfect reason why royalty needs to be abolished in all nations - and the same for the abominable and arrogant elites (whether by royal blood, capitalist greed of robber baron elites, ... leftist socialist radicals and terrorists ... removal of almost all socialism programs, ... and leave off all the onerous taxations upon the backs of the people - and let the national equity and prosperity of the population be the source of national stability and economy.

8:35 - you stock the table with the most work and time consuming gourmet dishes, and the royal cow still shakes her royal nose and asks for bloody rice pudding. If sb's born an ungrateful simpleton, they die as one no matter how much gold and jewels you put on top of their head. Yet ANOTHER instance during watching of this show where a guillotine opens itself in my pocket...
