First of all, I cannot believe how many commenters were unable to get past the poorly chosen title. I cannot understand why so many children watched this video, leaving their de-rigeur wisecracks, put-downs and "daring and unique" witticisms. What were they looking for? Even with my love of food and cooking, my culinary and business training and experience, I cannot imagine how the owners of Canterbury Royale have reached this wide-ranging level of expertise. Most of all, I am touched by the fact that Barbara and Renee's lives have, in my opinion, entered the realm of art, and that they still find pleasure in sharing this achievement with others.

Oh well... different stokes for different folks. Many of the very young &/or unadventurous, non-foodie people make those comments. I see it all the time; that's the demographic "chicken fingers" were created for. I can't be too harsh on them because I was once afraid of foods that were different or unfamiliar. I'm so grateful to have moved on from the fear of the "exotic"! :●}

Of course I would enjoy the atmosphere and food if I went to a restaurant like this, but this food isn’t even close to being authentic or historically accurate. I’m guessing that there wouldn’t be as many negative comments if they had just presented the restaurant for what it is - nice food, in a cozy atmosphere, with friendly people - instead of pretending that their food and presentation have anything to do with the Victorian Era (they don’t).

"It's love"-she said. And love it is. I try one or two of these a year, and when people applaud, or smile, gets emotional over the food, or embrace you, you feel like you have rocked the Royal Albert Hall with some kind of show. Some may ask you for the recipe, and it is up to you to give it or not, but yet that feels like having been asked for an autograph. Good way to harvest love. The food does not have to be expensive or fancy. Just make it look like ambrosia and nectar.

It's times like this that I really miss my intestine! And I really wish that I could eat, I know that's a strange thing to say, but thanks to ulcerative colitis, and colon cancer, and 33 operations over the past 28 years, I only have 5% of my entire gastrointestinal tract left, in other words, I can't eat a damn thing and rely mostly on supplements, energy drinks, and IV nutrition. Watching videos like this make my mouth water because I still get hungry, and I wish to God that I was able to eat any of these things, but I guess you have to put things in perspective. My cancer came back three times, and I've been clinically dead twice, yet at the age of 48 I'm still here, so I guess it's all good. I only wish that I could go to this woman's house and enjoy that delicious meal and their wonderful hospitality for which they are so famous for!

I think it's because it's not chain restaurant stuff. People aren't used to it anymore and restaurants charge top dollar for food that's not shortcut at all. Plus if it's food that rich English people ate back in the day, it's not really going to look dazzling. England had that reputation for being dull compared to the continent.
@justanotherhappyhumanist88326 жыл бұрын
Lol, and they moulded the butter into fleur-de-lis shapes! I’m pretty sure Queen Victoria wouldn’t have had her food shaped into symbols of a foreign monarchy!
@justanotherhappyhumanist88326 жыл бұрын
Not to mention that those electric ovens look super Victorian* 😂😂😂 (That was sarcasm) Anyway, you’re absolutely right. This place is only pseudo-authentic. They make money because most Americans don’t have a clue about culinary history, or history in general, for that matter...especially where other countries are concerned!
@justanotherhappyhumanist88326 жыл бұрын
sasayaki Actually, food in the Victoria era - when served to royalty, and the aristocracy, that is - was often extremely elaborate. I suggest you learn about food history. It’s a fascinating (and delicious!) subject. Food in the Victorian and Edwardian Eras was elaborate, heavy, and intricate. It certainly wasn’t boring or bland. Remember, Queen Victoria’s empire was vast, and covered about a quarter of the globe, so she ate dishes that took their inspiration from around the world. She was a big fan of curry, for example, and had her own Indian chefs make it for her on a regular basis. And that’s not even getting into the elaborate sugar and pastry displays that would have been served for dessert and tea! English food became bland during the world wars, when food variety and supplies were limited. As a result, a couple generations of kids grew up eating bland, processed food, and developed a taste for it. When the wars ended, the kids didn’t want to eat the old, complex foods, and instead favoured the bland foods with which they’d grown up. Adults at the time, who did remember the previous, over-the-top culinary era lamented the fact that the younger generations had lost their taste for fine food. It was often said at the time, by the older generations, that the wars had killed the British palate!

@PopFizzPaperDani7 жыл бұрын
That is expensive if you do it all the time or don't have the budget for it, but for a once-in-a-lifetime experience it's not crazy expensive. You can easily spend twice that much on a meal, say, in Vegas for the same quality and ingredients. Also for the amount of time/effort that goes into feeding just 10 people a night, with expensive ingredients like steak/lobster/etc, and just keeping the place running (especially if there is an off-season or bad weather), they probably aren't getting rich off their restaurant. :)
@MissJessyeNorman7 жыл бұрын
That's INEXPENSIVE for the level of expertise (cost of years of training required), the quality of food stuffs and that they ensure a constant, small, super fresh supply of that high quality fare--PLUS, the intense labour involved, both in the physical output/how it affects their bodies and the amount of time it consumes. These delightful women are offering INSANE VALUE FOR MONEY. Having grown up without money, I understand that these prices are absolutely out of reach for many people. But, in truth, these women are being incredibly restrained. They could charge a good deal more. Experiences like these are worth the investment, if one can scrounge together the funds to splash out on them for a single evening. If one cannot, these women and their restaurant are STILL wonderfully inspirational. Beauty, dedication, development of one's talents, etc... like this, are meant to breath life into others as well as into the artist herself. If one doesn't have the funds, simply learning that something so beautiful exists, can be the catalyst for creating a gorgeous dinner on a dime. And, having grown up without money, but loving 18th century Rococo style, I promise that there are ways of creating dinner parties, and even larger gatherings, on a shoestring budget--that are wonderfully imaginative, and which evoke the beauty of the period you adore/admire most ;) So, even if one cannot experience their genius first hand, the fact that they are doing this--can be and is a boon to those who have little in the way of financial wealth, but dream of baroque, regency, Victorian, and/or Edwardian era soirees...

Nice video and I wouldn't mind giving the place a try. But these are not "Queen Victoria's rules." This is just an old fashioned multi-course dinner using correct table etiquette that one would expect in polite society. I am not aware of any rules specific to Queen Victoria that would apply here. I don't think this would even qualify for the much broader concept of "Victorian." No men in white tie or ladies in formal evening dress with white gloves. And formal dinners back then typically went for around 12 courses. Still, it looks very nice and food sounds yummy. I'd even put on a tie for this.

On a BBC Queen Victoria Series they show an unusual custom in QV's day: Apparently when Queen Victoria was finished eating her meal her plate was cleared from the table along with the plates of every guest seated at her table, all at the same time, whether they we finished eatting or not. That seems so odd (not to mention rude); I wonder if such a custom is actually true.
