I mean the dialogue and scene was clealry scripted....but obviously they hadn't played out that scene in rehearsal until it was actually filmed so they have to improvise a little like the actual hit and maybe he got hit really hard and thus the reaction and way more emotion then it's suppose to show and less comedy which the scene was meant to show in the script and they kept it in...

I personally loved Scream 2 just as much as Scream, and definitely more than Scream 3. Scream 2 comments on its own blown up success right from the beginning: Tons of movie fans dressed in Ghostface costumes attending a movie called Stab, representing the popularity of the "Peanut-Eyed Ghost" mask after the 1996 release. Randy's prediction of a bigger body count and more shocking deaths becomes true: People become impaled, loved characters are shot and stabbed suddenly, thrown off balconies, etc. I LOVED Mrs. Loomis as a killer. It was a homage to Mrs. Voorhees in Friday the 13th, tied up the explanation of Billy's motive to kill, and broke the stereotype of only-male killers. You'd think the tall and buff Mickey would carry it out till the end, but Loomis quickly and methodically betrays her accomplice and then reveals how thought out she'd planned to passionately kill Sidney. She even made you believe for a moment that she could manipulate Cotton into helping her murder Sidney as well. She brought to light what makes Ghostface such a SCARY killer. It could be anyone in the costume: Your neighbor, your best friend, a mother, a cousin, a teenager. All they need is a knife, the costume, and a reason to kill you. It's not a flashy set of finger knives or a giant zombie in a hockey mask. You can't figure out if it's a man or a woman wanting you dead or if it's one or two or even three people who've decided want you dead.

There are several examples of that in other films. Hitchcock's "Rope" which was inspired by a real case from the 20s where two university students kidnap a 14yr old boy and kill him. The film "In Cold Blood" from Truman Capote's novel about the real life murder of a farm family. The Oscar winning Cannon film "Run Away Train" about two inmates that take over a train. The 1974 film "The Taking of Pelham 123" another film about a tain heist. What they all have in common is the killers are are two men and one or both are gay and in love with the other. In the 90s film makes amped up the trope and produced films about gay lovers with AIDS that go on killing sprees. Many of these films would probably be declared very "problematic" in today's social climate.

Stu was the one who killed Casey. My reasoning is thus: 1) He's still pretty clumsy and lets Casey get a couple of hits on him (sure, Billy got his arse handed him to by Tatum, but she's more "fight-y" than sweet, innocent Casey). 2) Stu mentions that Casey went out with him for a second (or was it two?) before dumping him so, in THAT case, he would have a sort-of motive to kill both Steve and Casey. 3) Tatum says that Stu was with her when Casey was killed, but we're never given a time stamp. He and Billy could've turned up at the house for the double-murder later into the night. 4) In my mind, Stu seems much more vicious and violent in his attacks. When Himbry is killed (clearly by Billy), it's a couple of stabs. When Stu kills, his kills are generally very nasty (Steve and Casey are gorily gutted, for example). 5) Kevin Williamson, the film's writer, confirmed that Stu was indeed the killer.
@rachelconsoli84286 жыл бұрын
Completely agree. I always assumed it was Billy on the phone with Casey while Stu was the one stalking her for the kill and doing the brunt work.
@CrazyChiks10005 жыл бұрын
It totally makes sense when you think about it in terms of their "killing styles" Billy is doing it for a revenge purpose, clearly having a lot of pent up rage so the want to just stab a few times before being done with it suits him. Sort of like a punching bag for him Stu, on the other hand, is clearly doing it for the thrill and because I feel Stu is a bit more unhinged and mentally unstable than Billy. This is because he's easily peer pressured into a murder spree. So it'd make sense for him to just go completely nuts with the kills because of the rush.
@madsclev2225 жыл бұрын
i do agree w what u said although there was a time stamp given as when tatum calls sidney saying she is gonna be at her house by seven she mentioned that casey and steve hadnt been killed until past ten (?) or eleven
@Facelessman2544 жыл бұрын
It was Billy that killed Casey you can tell that by looking at the way he stabs her on the floor.. He uses his right hand only like he does throughout the film.. Stu holds the knife 2 handed just like how he stabs Billy upstairs and when he's behind Randy on the couch.. Stu was the one who got hit in the head by the Casey with the phone through the window which knocked him out for a minute or so which is why Billy was the one who killed her. You'll notice when they're at school Stu is using Tatums mirror in the hallway to check his forehead for bruises or bumps from that phone shot he took to the head and possibly from when he headbutted sid too later on...again remember when Stu is scaring Sid in that scene he's holding the knife 2 handed over her? Trust me Wes Craven was no fool, he always put in so many little details for us

I think 2 and 3 do a good job of keeping up the satire. Scream two is a satire of Scream one in that it tries to convince the audience that it is the men that have become recently prominent in Sidney's life who are the killers when it is actually revealed to be people who are practically strangers to Sidney while killing off two men who were protectors in Sidney's life. Scream two takes the frailty of women in horror films and makes them into the powerhouses of the film, the killer and the survivor which is a contrast to the first films use of powerful men as the killers. The third film is satirical about the making of horror movies overall one of the most intense and eerie scenes of the movie is when Sidney is chased by the killer onto the set of a movie based on what actually happened to her. It feels inappropriate that the fake set was created to be an almost exact copy of the house Sidney grew up in. In the film it even causes her problems during the chase as she tries to enter a second floor room only to discover there isn't actually a room built. The whole thing kinda highlights how dark it is to make horror movies based on real places or events. We even find out the director of the movie himself is the killer.

@Jen - Jen Very true! And as for Scream 4, there's an element of satire in that it as around with the normal expectation of the "slasher villain vs final girl victim" relationship, and has an extremely creepy outlook on the modern belief of sensationalizing ourselves (though I'm probably biased, because I felt that the main killer creeped me out personally). 🤓🤓🤓🤓

Scream 4 was a satire on how all the slashers were getting modern remakes I thought, and that's part of what made it good, bc it had much the same purpose as the first one. Cept instead of on slashers in general it was on how they were always trying to make the slashers more interesting and appealing to a modern audience... And oftentimes not really succeeding in that goal, just coming off as trying to milk the cash cow.

_Scream_ was a movie I fell in love with when I first started watching horror movies at age 3/4 (on VHS too) and is now my fav Wes Craven film and fav horror film overall alongside _Halloween._ Sidney Prescott had instantly become (and still is) my *#1 favorite horror heroine* (to admit embarrassingly, I even had a lil crush on her as a lil kid), such a sympathetic protagonist to root for, sweet & nice yet strong-willed and kick-ass, even then as a kid I felt sorry for the hell she was going through. Love how she averts the horror movie tropes, she even *_broke_* the "Sex=Death" rule, how badass is that? And what I love most about her is that she's a survivor, whenever the Killer shows up she jumps into Fight-or-Flight mode. So yea if you asked me who my #1 favorite horror film heroine was, I will always say Sidney Prescott, more so than any other.

I really grew to like Sidney Priscott myself. :) She's a character you can really sympathize with not only having to deal with her mother's death but also her being placed in a not a good spotlight by the media by Gale. Her own boyfriend being the killer and wanting to end her life certainly didn't help matters too.
@jabariweathers3097 жыл бұрын
I love your breakdown of how technically masterful the final third of this movie is. I always get frustrated trying to convey just how many balls Craven and Williamson are able to juggle perfectly in the final act. Scream may not be perfect, but it's *far and away* my favorite slasher because of its many ambitions and how consistently it's able to hit those notes so well. It helps that the cast *is* extremely likable, and inhabiting characters of deceptive depth. On top of that, Sidney is kind of a secret weapon of a protagonist, and her inversion of final girl tropes as well as seeing that level of something approaching sensitivity for a woman in a mire of trauma in a slasher is really refreshing to this day. She's an easy principle character to root for, and the supporting cast evokes similar pangs of empathy from me. Tatum's final stand is hilarious, but it's also really heartbreaking to see it's conclusion because the film makes her so likeable. Gale is unapologetically career minded and kind of vile, but there's something dementedly admirable about her particular kind of pluck, and she reads as more than a simple weather pun on screen. The sequels would diminish their understanding of balancing true satire with comedy, but the first nails it (though I'd argue that Scream 2 holds a good deal of merit in how it treats Sidney and a few choice setpieces; it's immensely watchable if not particularly good). One other thing, this movie is...so gorgeous. There's a lot of wonderfully kinetic camera work and some ridiculously well-considered compositions, and the editing is deceptively meticulous. Thanks for this video, Ryan! Your channel is always a joy!
I'm not judging but I'm curious to know why you think Scream 2 is the best.
@Snoogen112 жыл бұрын
Not to rate the films in order of enjoyment, one thing I do like is how, the films each started criticising several aspects. Scream 1 was a satirical take on the 90's slasher flix's. Scream 2 kind of poked fun at the concept of sequels and meta commentary. Scream 3 focused on not just the horror elements, but the way hollywood treats slasher movies, and film making in general. Whereas scream 4 not only talked about how the increase in social media influences not just the real life consequences of real life killers, but also how the audience reacts to the rapid flow of new information thanks to social media. (yes I know that's very word salady, so let me explain,) In Scream 1, Sidney doesn't hear about Cassies death until she arrives at school the next day. The principle isn't discovered dead until hours after his murder. Wheras in scream 4 there is literally a scene where a guy livestreams his own murder, and the killers themselves are also filming the murders to post online, and also the same live-stream technology saves gales life. It's a critique not just on the use of social media, but also the effects it has on people having that information always available thanks to the internet.

I feel the "satire doesn't equal comedy" bit might conflict with some folks, so I'll elaborate: Satire is using comedic elements to make a point about something. Comedy purely goes for laughs, satire generally has a more thought-provoking nature that's masked as humorous. You take Veep for example - it makes fun of the systematic operations of politics and government by using characters who are clearly idiots or lack awareness of how ridiculous their behaviors and actions are. So we take irony and caricature and put it in a real life circumstance to make a point about the public's perception of politics.

When I first saw a trailer for Scream I immediately thought it was going to be a comedy. The proof for me was in the Ghostface mask, which is comical in and of itself. I essentially thought it was going to be what Scary Movie ended up being a few years later, which is ironic considering that Scary Movie was the original title for Scream. As a lifelong horror fan I thought that Scream was trying to spoof the genre that I loved so much, and my knee jerk reaction was to take offense to that, because I mistakenly thought that by making fun of the horror genre they would kill off the genre entirely, and it was already struggling to survive in the 90's already. When it came out on video I broke down and rented it from my local video store, and was pleasantly surprised to find out that I had been completely wrong. Scream wasn't spoofing the genre (at least not in a mean spirited kind of way), it was celebrating it. Scream has since become one of my favorite horror movie franchises, and I'm so glad that I gave it a chance in spite of my initial decision not to.

Totally agree, the sequels are nothing special. But, if there's anything Scream 3 did well, it's the ending. Love the door drifting open and Sidney just leaves it alone to watch a movie with Dewey, Gale, and Det. Kincaid. She can face the future without fear. She's finally found her peace...until Scream 4 lol
@infamousthethird4 жыл бұрын
I saw that ending scene for the first time when I was a kid and even back then I thought it was a really awesome and powerful ending. It's been a movie memory that's stuck with me ever since even though I dont actually remember much of the movie itself.

“until Scream 4” this is one of my issues with S4. i know it’s widely beloved but personally it’s my least liked in the franchise. one of those reasons being that Scream 3’s plot felt like a perfect end to Sidney’s story, so for the series to commit necromancy and bring it all back felt unnecessary. if they truly wanted to reboot the franchise/make a Sequel set, then they should’ve let Sidney take more of a back seat or just get a name drop at the most. it would’ve been more interesting and effective if they had just let S1-3 be the “Sidney Saga” and 4-6 be about another character/cast entirely with a few nods and references. or maybe thats just the Star Wars fan in me lol

That isn't that far off funny enough seeing as how Billy acts like Eddy most of the time with Stu obviously being like a more messed up version of Ed. All that's missing is a murderer equivalent of Double D and you're all set.

This video is actually listed in a google news article about how scream saved the slasher genre. I thought that was kinda cool.

I think Scream 2 is often lumped n into a ghetto of inferior sequelitis in the genre. I think it's a much better film than given credit for. Sure, it lacks a lot of the ingenuity that made Scream scary and groundbreaking, but I think it has a very different tone akin to the operatic giallo thrillers of the 70s and a better fleshing out of character development expanding upon the characters we've come to love. The set pieces are visually engaging and while the film is certainly not without its flaws, I think it still holds and ranks as one of the best horror sequels or just sequels in film history. It's worth reexamining and I think should get more credit. Not quite as solid as 1 but pretty close for me. This film works on its own terms while never disrespecting its predecessor. Just my 2 cents

I am binge watching all your videos, and I love who in depth your commentary goes into how the intricate production of a movie creates the psychological state it puts the viewer in. I had a friend tell me that he didnt like Scream because its too tropey. I think spent half an hour explaining how that is the point, its a send up and almost a parody of the traditional horror tropes, which is what makes it brilliant. I kinda see Scream as a meta black comedy in a way. Even though I know it isnt strictly a comedy

I liked the bit where the one girl criticizes a horror movie person for "going up the stairs when she can just run out the front door" but then she herself ends up doing what she just criticized in a moment of desperation she didn't account for. See this reminds me of idiots who say, "Why don't the cops just shoot him in the leg?" or "If I were there, I'd just taze him." Yeah easy to say that when you're on the couch eating potato chips. Put yourself in an actual dangerous situation with a volatile and unpredictable suspect intent on bashing your head in, and you'd probably do different. All your hypothetical solutions fall apart under chaotic reality.

@jason lewis sorry for the late response, mate, but I get being trained to aim for the largest target. That's smart. But their first response to any given situation shouldn't be to shoot to kill. That was the point I was trying to make.

YOU REALLY JUST MADE THAT FUCKING COMPARISON???? How about the times where the suspect didnt have a gun, was handcuffed, WASNT A THREAT, and a cop guns them down? For fuck sake, this is NOTHING like REAL LIFE COPS MIRDETING CIVILIANS, ignorant FUCK, people losin children out here and youre comparing a movie where a serial killer is chasing someone to a cop, with a gun, and a taser, and a baton, and pepper spray, choosing the bullet as the means to take someone down Normally when people complain about a cop killing a civilian THERES A REASON

Am I the only one who gets why Sidney ran up the stairs during the first attack? She tried going out the door but it was locked, so after she dodged the knife, which would have gone through her head, she did the next best thing and went for the safety of her bedroom. Don't forget, she's 16 or so in this movie. Not an adult. And once she gets there she locks him out and contacts 9-1-1. She did what she could to survive. I assume when you're being attacked by a psychopath with a knife you don't think 100% rationally, just look for any option to avoid ending up dead.

I remembered this video after the new Scream 6 trailer and commenting on another KZbinr's channel. Is that from the trailer and the subway poster, that the focus of the previous installments was Maureen, and being the first victim as we all know. Sam is the conjuction of the routes and the new focus of the plot, but not a death victim as the previous installments. Using the poster, crossing back over the dead starting from her. I'm reminded of Randy on tape in Scream 3 giving exposition about the trilogy. How this just reads as a new installment of a trilogy leading from Scream 4's exposition on new horror & remake/sequel/requel/reboot - leading to become a "rebootquel". The nods to other horror movies and franchises as before and now of the 60's, 70's, 80's slasher era, revitalized through the 90's into the new millennia; this happening near and/or on Halloween night, the knife scrapping scene shown, taking place in New York, survivor/reluctant hero, Sam's questionable mental state, family ties, and the meta-satire. How familiar to me is (taking this as a new trilogy) seemingly following the similarities in template to A Nightmare On Elm Street mixed with the establishment of Scream 3 from Randy in the first trilogy.

it helps wes directed them all but the third film sucks cause kevin didnt write it...clearly..he gave them a rough outline of a possible third film idea but then they got someone else to write the dialogue and script so it came out sketchy les smart and because it came out after columbine it seems very toned down violence wise ...honestly with the half assed effort the actors put in If it wasn't directed by wes the 3rd film would of been way worse..it still is shot like a scream film so ill give it that much..i can rewatch it because of that..its not total shit but its bad ...

There are subtle ways in which you can identify the monster behind the mask. >Stu is clumsy, holds his knife with both hands, and has a very eager nature with causing lethal wounds in one strike due to his knowledge of human biology. >Billy is highly aggressive, holds his knife with only one hand, and enjoys strangulation and is most likely his MO since he killed Sid's mother, likely strangling her in rage over losing his family.

There's one really cool detail i noticed while watching scream. So, when Sidney gets in gale's news van, she sees camera footage filmed from under the TV in Stu's house. But the footage has a 30 second delay. 5 or so seconds before Kenny is killed, the camera (the one That the movie was filmed with) zooms in very quickly, but there's nobody in the frame. About 5 seconds later, kenny tries to get out of the van, and THAT'S when Ghostface kills him, resulting in a delay in the scare, which is a parallel to the footage in the van having a delay. It's an amazing fake out, and i think it's one of the examples of the ways this movie parodies other slashers.

I live in a very isolated and lonely part of America where going to the nearest town, not even city, just a small town with a couple grocery stores and a gas station takes 4 hours by car. With Covid I’ve been isolated for a while but now it’s starting to snow so that’s even more isolation and just the feeling of emptiness and vastness of the desert-like arid hills around me. KZbin is the only thing keeping me sane. I haven’t seen another person for months. All I see are deer and dunks in the sky and snow and hills. Very few trees. I feel like I’m stuck in a sea of dirt, shrubs, and snow. The definition of alone.
