Why is this master only? The explanation is so helpful. I never know what I'm supposed to be thinking or looking for when I start a match. All I've been doing is improvising. Having a clearly defined thought process "strategize around your character's objective" is super helpul.

Eichro This sounds more like a John than anything. Tiers exsist for a reason. They allow you to realize how well you character can do in comparison to other characters. No one's saying you can never win with say Zelda or Jiggly puff. Just that it's soooooo much harder to in comparison to say a shiek or a Bayo. And that's also not saying that these characters are easy to pick up either

You never cease to make me glad that I subscribed. Honestly being present and thinking during a match is by far the absolute hardest part. Hey guys I had a training session with Izaw today it was excellent highly recommend I learned a whole bunch of stuff about my gameplay. -Too much double jumping - Lack of follow up pressure - The use of Ikes down throw from 0 - 30 % - Teching while fumbling and even fast falling with it - Watching your opponents amount of jumps and punish (sounds obvious but it was not to me) - Any a few recovery options All learned within an hour. Highly recommended its a good investment to your gameplay. Thanks Izaw again. Good luck everyone -

I love how general your explanations are regarding such a complex mechanism known as the neutral. In fact, it's so general that it doesn't just pertain to smash, but to any fighter. I picked up Guilt Gear Xrd: Revelator over the summer, since I decided I wanted to try out a new genre of fighter that I wasn't quite used to. I've played smash, street fighter, and Marvel style games like Skullgirls, so the next step I suppose was some of the far more fast paced anime fighters. I spent a good while in the lab, doing all the tutorials, learning combos, playing against the CPU, and after a few days I felt like I had enough of a grasp for some human experience. Needless to say I lost almost every match over the next few days. Why? The answer was simple: I had no idea how to play the neutral with my character. I took to the GG reddit to ask for some advice on how to go about picking and choosing the useful bits of information when so much is being vomited at you at once at such a rapid pace that defines GG as a game. And not gonna lie, every piece of advice I was given was covered word for word with your explanation. In fact the only difference was that I was given examples specific to my character. The biggest thing I wasn't doing was asking myself what my objective was. I knew my character's general combo trees, what moves make good combo starters, what moves are good for pokes and spacing, etc, but I wasn't really asking myself what I really needed to do in order to get the gears turning in the first place. "My character needs to find an opening to set up a particular special move first and foremost, at which point I can truly start my offense." Ok, that's all well and good, but *how* do you go about *getting* that setup? What's your *setup for the setup?* Once I started asking myself these questions, my game started to further refine itself. Rather than losing 20 or more games before finally taking one due to me adapting to patterns each match, I started learning their habits and reversals in a handful of plays. Games like Smash, Skullgirls, Street Fighter, etc have a much slower and more easily understood neutral compared to the hyper aggressive neutrals of games like Guilty Gear and BlazBlue, so it was a great experience for me. The point of all that was to demonstrate how relevant your advice truly is, and how vital it is to mastering the process of dissecting a neutral for each game you play. I hope that anyone who watches this video can recognize that, and have more confidence as to stepping out of their comfort zones and approaching new fighters, now that they have a process to fall back to when they look to refine their practical play.

This is the kind of mentality a lot of players should take. Thanks for the video series. when i started playing smash competitive i felt very uneasy. since most of the people i know are into competitive smash bros for a long time (since melee) and i only really played for fun. i saw the other face of the game, the competitive side, i got attached to it and wanted to improve as much as i can. i personally thank you, most of your videos really helped me, and while im still not the best in my country (or even close to that) i see big differences in my way to see the game, and the way i play being more confident that before (I was terryfied to use both doctor mario and jigglypuff, since they are my favorite characters to play, a seen that a lot of people see them as terrible, and now i rank 8 in local tournaments with both, once even 2nd place with doc) Thanks for your help and hope your channel grows bigger and better :)

Fantastic. Finally, a video that breaks down aspects of neutral by not just giving an explanation, but by giving *slowed down* examples, fully explaining those examples in words, *and* showing the implications of executing those concepts, all in one video. I didn't understand the point of safe pokes at all until watching this. I thought it was just "do this move at this spacing every once in a while, and hope the opponent doesn't have their shield up one of those times." But now I understand that it's about tracking the opponent's reaction to it. And the explanation of objectives, how conditioning helps you achieve them, and how objectives change constantly...I'm gonna be able to see replays, especially top-level matches, with a whole new set of eyes. It's clear that a ton of work and planning was put into not just talking about the concepts, but making them *concrete* and taking the time to connect all the dots, instead of just leaving it up to the viewer to try to connect them. Beautiful job, Izaw.

Maybe Im weird, but I don't play Smash 4 as practice, but I play Melee more. I feel like Sm4sh is a game about knowledge and matchup quirks more than individual skill (Obviously things like PP are technical, but I'm saying that the game relies more on knowledge) and my tech skill improves way more playing Melee. I can pick up Smash 4 after weeks of not playing and still do really well because it's so reliant on knowing your matchup and options, and I just develop things like neutral and movement through playing Melee. (I am in no way saying Melee is better, I play them both, but I was just putting my honest opinion)

You know, I feel that even a professional player can watch this video, and still manage to find something missing on his/hers playstyle. The video focus on some things that go through a LOT of smashers out there, but just doesn't know how important they really are. The video focuses on those things, and makes the person realize what can he/she do to improve. I'm no professional by any means, but I AM very competitive about this game. About a month ago I managed to enter a 80 person tournament, with people from all country here on Brazil, and managed to go against two of the best players of my country. I didn't manage to take a single stock from them, but literally when playing the day after, I felt like I was so much better, like the experience I gained by playing someone who isn't toe-to-toe with me, but miles better, made me unconsciously understand the game better. By watching this video, I finally understood why that "unconscious" improvement happened. It was just because my playstyle usually owuld won against a good amount of players, but when it came down to someone that really knows how to adapt correctly to my playstyle, they just bodied me. The thing that I didn't notice until now though, is that in the middle of the battle I was adapting to them too, although not as fast, it made me a better player overall when the games ended. Like for instance, I main Cloud and usually throw a good amount of spaced N-airs to keep the pressure going, but when those two players caught on to it, I just couldn't approach anymore. Days after while playing, I started to think why didn't my strategy work, and what could I do to correct my mistakes, and what I started doing was tomahawking, and only realized that tomahawking was a actual known tech when I watched the Expert - Part 3 of this series. This video really helped me to find out more about who i am in smash, and how I play. So for that, I'm really grateful. Thanks for the hard work on these series Izaw!

I played Izaw on For Glory today. I played bowser and he played marth. Bowser is not my main, so I got bodied. Not that that matters. I would have been bodied anyways xD

After watching these videos, I feel that I have a really long way to go. It was very insightful and informative. My objectives during a match: "Get the first attack!" "Keep your distance!" "Get him to my level of damage!" - No matter how many Stocks we have (example: I have 1, while he/she has 2-3) And last, but not least: "GET UP!"

Somehow this gets less views than your Roy video. I think some would rather analyse a character than be good at the game.

I've been playing Smash Brothers for many years wanting to become a competitive player, I've always practiced and I was very consistent. Through the past year, playing many great players I felt that I have been always missing something in my gameplay. I felt I would never understand why I'm not improving. But this video helped me realize something so simple, and that's "Awareness". I played patient, I have good offense and defense, but I was unaware of the match because I've always had the fear of losing and I played to "safe" because let's face it, it sucks to lose. Izaw, Thank You!! You've helped me realize my flaws as a player. Thank You for the knowledge you are providing for players looking for improvement like myself!

This guide This guide is one of the mos detailed, well explained guides of neutral game I ever saw. Explains how to play it correctly detail by detail, and not only that, but also explaing the mental capabilities you need not only in Smash, but in real life too "Is that we think we know, that keep us away from knowing" So true -Answering to the description of course I want a Trainer like you for Smash-

I've never thought of Smash in terms of objectives before. This is really important. Not only do I have to find my character's objective, but to be aware of what all other characters have to do so I can see through their playstyle. Thanks Izaw
@antehman29128 жыл бұрын
In your upcoming "art of" guides, could you list some good objectives for the chracter in question? This would help a lot of players get better I feel.
@keatonramey22748 жыл бұрын
The objective is basically setting yourself for the optimal combo, whether it starts with grab (like most), items, etc. Just figure out what does the most damage with your character at the moment and base your neutral around trying to start those combos.
@antehman29128 жыл бұрын
That would apply to most characters, but what about strange ones like Duck Hunt or Mega Man or Pac man
@keatonramey22748 жыл бұрын
+Antehman 0 not too sure about pac man or duck hunt, but I know megaman has some small combos with grab. Just trying zoning them out with projectiles and if you catch them in shield for too long maybe try to go for grab
@CONJOPI8 жыл бұрын
Pac-Man's sprint attack is one of his most useful tools; it's practically lagless. A good objective could be to lead that into up-air or forward air strings. Pac-man also has a lot of options with hydrant and items, don't under-utilize these.
@antehman29128 жыл бұрын
Exactly, so add that info into the guide, see?

I found this video to be the only one that helped me in any way. Anyone can learn how to perfect pivot or punish out of shield, but being able to understand the neutral and being able to properly strategize truly is the core of getting good at this game.

I know ultimate is out but I just wanted to know more about neutral because I was so bad at smash. It came to a point where I was going to quit smash and realizing that all my years of effort and practice were a waste. Throughout the video I learned that I don’t have to always win but instead I need to learn and adapt. I need to work around my problems and to not only think about victory. You have no idea how much I needed this pep-talk for becoming better and not giving up. Thank you Izaw, I’m grateful for you and your content...

Wow, that video was really REALLY good. Like, I play melee, but the concepts that you discussed here apply to every smash game. You went over each concept (which are very hard to understand) very accurately and clearly. I am very impressed. Earned a sub for SURE my man.

I feel like this helped put into words how I act in my matches. I don't necessarily autopilot, as I do pay attention to my opponents, but if someone were to ask what I was doing right, I honestly couldn't tell them, like I was in the mental phase of "unconscious competence." Now that this video came out, I have a better idea of how to verbalize what I should/shouldn't be doing in a match, and that'll help me make note of it for later down the line. That being said, you did an amazing job of this Izaw. It's broken down into simple enough parts and terms that any newcomer can grasp it, while there's still information and viewpoints that more experienced players can make use of as well. Excellent work.
