Sozkhwani is a form of presenting lamentations and elegies around the battle of Karbala. A wide poetic tradition, it is mainly practiced in sessions held to commemorate the event in Muharram. In Pakistan and India these poetic works have also been composed in raags and are performed to emphasise the human, emotional content as well as convey the subtext of suffering, valour and sacrifice in the retelling. This art form has drawn the likes of major stalwarts such as Ustad Bade Gulam Ali Khan, Ustad Fayaz Khan, Ustad Fateh Ali, Amanat Ali and many others.
Askari Naqvi has been actively decoding Sozkhwani as an art form and presenting it to audiences in India. He has also attempted to recontextualize the universal message in the poetic form to address contemporary realities.
