Over the years (40+) surfing Hawaiian big waves, I had seen that the bottom turn is getting lost in all the fluff of doing tricks. John John showing us the importance and beauty of a world class bottom turn to set up the power cut back. Aloha. 😀🤙🙏
@OffDaLip27 күн бұрын
Because not many can master a bottom turn like this. On a thick, heaving wave of raw energy. The power it takes to draw a bottom turn like that is incredible. With JJF it's probably a combination of perfect technique and power. But yea, this wave showcases his bottom turn. He doesn't have the build of Johnny Boy or Dane Kealoha, but JJF can bottom turn as good as any power surfer, in my humble opinion.

I know I’ve said it before, Robo has definitely studied JJF carve. He’s getting close, but the speed John carries is insane. Smokin video. Thanks ODL
@larkangel65932 жыл бұрын
Yeah, same power flow carve Just a hair less critical and quick Somebody always has to be #2 Maybe some dead lifts? It's funny, to 99.9% of the surfing world it's upper body strength You get to the top 5 or 10, it's leg strength that creates the performance separation

JJF and Clay Marzo, the funnest surfers to watch. Thank goodness there are plenty videos of them.
@OffDaLip27 күн бұрын
I will never forget in the NSSA final at trestles when Clay Marzo scored 2 perfect 10's in the first few minutes and left the rest of the surfers to play for second. Marzo is a genius on the waves. But also worth noting is his body lets him do what his mind wants on the wave. JJF is the same: a man with unlimited talent in the water. Watching them from the beach is almost as good as surfing itself.

This place is very fickle. I caught it ONCE, solid 8', hollow, and perfect. I was afraid to paddle out. Not because of the surf size. It looked like a contest being held because there were only three guys out, but there wasn't. It was 1990. The surfers were Tom Caroll, Glen Winton, Ross Clark Jones.... and then me. It only lasted about 45 minutes, and the tide changed. Then it started to crumble. I had a 7'8" Willis Bros pin tail. It is one of my best memories of many. Thank you for the clip...
@OffDaLip Жыл бұрын
Yea, that's how that place is. Usually just a couple pros out. I surfed it once in high school, like 6-8'. The lefts were fine, but the rights...I caught one and got caught by a set. I was washed straight through the rockpile. Board broke horizontal and vertical lol. The lifeguard said he thought I was gonna die, but I didn't even get a scratch on me. That's the last time i surfed it hahahaha

What i realy dont understand, is how they take a wave that breaks the whole way through, jump off the board, and still manage to get to the lineup. and not only that, they do it tons of times through a session. if i get down and dive on a wave not in the end of it, i will have to paddle for half an hour getting out of currents and actually back into the lineup

It definitely shows that all the time John spends in the air has left his carve to go unattended.
